I suspect this will get pretty cold as most people won't have heard of DOSS, but thought I'd post it anyway as it might help someone. I can tell you from experience that this speaker is incredible and wipes the floor with speakers many times the price. I was convinced after seeing clavinetjukies videos praising it, in which it was beating speakers 4 times the price such as the Riva Arena, as well as the JBL Charge 3 etc:If you aren't familiar with clavinetjunkie excellent channel he pretty much spends his life reviewing bluetooth speakers, and really knows his stuff so when he heaps this much praise on something you know it's good.

I can't praise it enough - I actually prefer it to my previous favourite bluetooth speaker, the excellent Riva Turbo X, which cost me 3 times the price at just under £200.

Why is it so good? How can a speaker you've not heard of be better than all these big names? In a nutshell it's a clone of the Sony SYSX77 (that was £250), but it's a clone that sounds better than the original as it's been better tuned. It doesn't have the Sony's wi-fi features, and there's no waterproofing or phone charging etc, it's just a really, really good speaker and a brilliant price.

A few people had issues with quality control when it first launched, specifically a rattle from the grill but that seems to have been addressed in the current stock - certainly it's not happening on mine.

If you are looking for a Bluetooth speaker at around the £150 mark or below I'd urge you to try one of these out before committing to anything else as I suspect that, like me, you'll end up astonished at how you can get something sounding this good at anything like this price. It's not particularly small, or waterproof, nor does it have any app control like my Riva does, so it may not be for everyone, but it terms of sound quality for money I don't think you'll beat it.

32009083-EBHfr.jpgIve got mine week ago. Unfortunately I didnt get that deal but for £80 I think its still a very good price. Im very impressed so far. Built quality is ok. I just took that fabrick out straight away and sound is just amazing. I have b&o a1 which is only mono speaker but much more portable. I wanted something bigger and stereo this time. And thanks to clavinetjunkie my choice was simple, Doss soundbox XL! I use to have bose SL3 and I must say that Doss sounds better, being more than twice cheaper than the bose. Im just hoping that the quality of this speaker will be good over the years of usage. Ive heard some ppl saying that 12V socket was pusched inside when they tried to plug in charger to it.

Afraid not - the only thing I would say is that compared to some of the other speakers I have, like the JBL Charge 3, this has a more natural sound and doesn't have that typical artificial treble and bass v shaped boost, which might make it sound a bit flat if you are used to that, as I was, but having said that mine's really clear even with speech etc so if yours isn't I'd return it. If you look at some of the reviews there was some quality control issues with the fabric grill causing noise, I though it was sorted as mine was fine but I wonder if you got one of those ones?

That is strange, maybe thr is something wrong with it then, I have no trouble with the grill but it doesnt sound very natural at all. Maybe, I should try using a differnet cable? If I have no luck with that I will send it back and see if they can send me another.

Ive bought this speaker, and it seems to have problems with bluetooth connection, as it sometimes disconects and connects while playing music. Do you have the same issue?
razorwire to kuba1012
4 Sep 17 #38
I've had no bluetooth issues at all, I'd try forgetting the pairing by holding down the play button for 5 seconds, then pairing again. If it's still disconnecting for you send it back to Amazon as mine's been rock solid.

My speaker arrived over the weekend. i wanted to use it for my TV, and altho the bass is very good I find the clarity not to great, I cant seem to alter it either. Do have any ideas? I am wondering if my money could have been spent netter elsewhere

How is it a clone of the Sony SRS-X77? I mean it's the same speaker layout, but the subwoofer and two drivers are clearly different, the inputs are in an entirely difference place and it looks to be about 40% thicker.

Chinese carmakers have an unfortunate habit of copying European car models and slightly renaming them. Just because it *looks* like a premium model from a premium manufacturer, doesn't mean it is.
VDisillusioned to khamito
29 Aug 17 #10
Who cares if it's a copy or not? It's supposed to sound better than the SRS-X77 anyway.
khamito to VDisillusioned
29 Aug 17 #11
"This appears to be a clone of a £250 product, for £60!" sounds different than "£60 bluetooth speaker, it's meant to pretty good".

Or rather, people shouldn't make nonsense up.
VDisillusioned to khamito
30 Aug 17 #12
Maybe the £250 SRS-X77 isn't actually very good. I would not be at all surprised.
razorwire to khamito
30 Aug 17 #14
The reason he compares it to the Sony in that video above is I guess because it's borrowed the basic design from it rather than being an exact replica (that's pretty common with Chinese speaker manufactures, DOSS certainly aren't the only ones doing it, there's another speaker from iDeaUSA which also uses the same design as the Sony). Maybe clone isn't the best word as that does imply an identical copy but if you look you'll see that's the word the reviews have used and not something I've made up.

I don't know how valid the reviews that say it's a better speaker are because I've never owned a SRS-X77, although I did have the cheaper SRS-X33 which this definitely beats. However I have owned way too many bluetooth speakers in my quest to find one I really love over the last few years and can tell you this one is great. Give it a go and then return it to Amazon if you don't think it lives up to what I've said, but I reckon you'll be pleasantly surprised. I'm not saying it's perfect (it's a fairly big old thing and not waterproof, so not really a camping speaker for example) but it does sound far better than it has any right to for the price. I'm a huge fan of the Turbo X, which I rated as my favourite, most natural sounding speaker (and have raved about it on here previously on other speaker threads) but I reckon this sounds ever better to my ears despite being a third of the price. I would say it's not as loud, as the DOSS isn't the loudest speaker by a long shot, and doesn't have the flash app or the other nice features the Turbo X has, but for pure sound alone it's got it beat.
khamito to razorwire
31 Aug 17 #31
It's called expectation setting. A claim is made that product B is functionally the same as product C, but at one third of the price. Someone who purchases it based on this will have a fundamentally different reaction to how 'good' it sounds compared to someone who just goes out and buys a £64 speaker.

I have an SRS-X88 and I find it thoroughly unimpressive, my 13 year old Logitech 2.1 desktop speakers blow it away.

I have owned this speaker and besides the rattle from the grill or the material which was between that and the speaker its a brilliant speaker for £60 and I say this from experience from owning 6 other Bluetooth speakers.

razorwire
30 Aug 17 #27
It's true, the reason I keep pointing out it's size is that for me it's not a brilliant camping/festival speaker but it's not designed to be. It's actually not that much bigger than a Charge 3 (about 3 inches longer in length) but it is twice the weight, which when you are lugging a backpack around makes a difference. This is more a speaker you'll use at home, in the garden or take in the car on holiday with you.

I've still got a Charge 3 which my wife uses at work which I intend to keep hold of because it's smaller and waterproof, so ideal to chuck in my rucksack. I can also charge my phone from it, plus it's got longer playing time. However it doesn't sound nearly as good so it's stuff like this which means I've bought way too many speakers over the last few years!

Here's the DOSS next to a can of cider so you can judge the size - as you can see it's not massive but it is a fair lump if you are carrying it about.

Just a wee question, I bought this before this deal and it's being delivered tomorrow, can I price match this with Amazon or will I have to go through the return and buy again route? Thanks

I've managed to get them to refund the difference to credit, otherwise you'll need to order again and then send it back. Daft I know, but Amazon CS seem to have had some powers revoked and you'll need to email in for some issues.

It is a bit low on features as I said. Pairing would be nice but for me I'd never use it, although DOSS have said they are looking into it for a version 2 at some point. I can't think of any speakers below £120 with aptX, though sure there must be some. I've got it on my Turbo X but as I said this still sounds better to my ears even without it.

I bought one previously, for the higher price, and it does sound very good, especially using the 3.5mm aux input. It's not terribly loud at maximum volume (though loud enough for me) but the fidelity is good at all levels. I can't fault it, and I doubt there is anything out there that even comes close for the price.

As in a bit too good to be true? Well all I can say is I really do think it's that good. There loads more glowing reviews on amazon.com too, but I think most people trust clavinetjunkie's option (I certainly do - he's my first go-to source when I'm buying a speaker). If you check the comments out on his videos on youtube you'll only find people that have bought one praising it too.
