I'll stick to our regular takeaway Chinese order for £13 which is £13 and includes 2 mains and 3 sides (if you include the free prawn crackers)!
Probably triple the calorie count though

The relative hygiene ratings of specific takeaways don’t really change the fact that a freshly prepped takeaway from a decent establishment is going to be better than this. Indian and Chinese/Cantonese takeaways pre cook much of their meat, pre-cook the rice for given dishes in advance and have sauces ready prepared for each dish so that each particular order can be assembled as quickly as possible - there is no way around this, unless you want your Indian takeaway to spend three hours slow cooking your lamb so that it doesn’t taste like the bottom of a shoe; and egg fried rice IS made from cold, pre-cooked rice - it doesn’t work properly with hot rice as the starting point. As long as rice is cooked, cooled and stored properly it is perfectly safe to pre cook.
Despite this, the vegetables are cooked fresh and the battered elements will taste better as they won’t have been sat around in a sealed plastic container for a week. Ever wondered why a supermarket samosa tastes nothing like a takeaway one? It’s because they have to use a different type of pastry to remedy the fact that it needs storing away in a sealed package.
Still a good deal, mind. I’ll be having mine later but I’ll have some MSG and salt on the side to make it a bit tastier :stuck_out_tongue:

Got a Chinese take away, got in the car, heard the bag rustle, looked
over and saw a pair of eyes looking over the top of the bag at me then
disappear back inside. I was so scared I nearly crashed.
I looked again and saw the eyes looking back at me then disappear again.
I ran back into the shop with the bag, terrified. I asked the Chinese
guy "what the bloody hell is going on here?" He said "you no worry, it
peking duck."

No mention of what the sizes are of the mains in grams does any one know? also sizes of the sides need to make sure my M&S visit is worthwhile

On the subject of 'is your local takeaway food better than M&S? ' Checkout 'Scores on the Doors' website and see if your takeaway is safe , clean etc..

A takeaway is always a bigger gamble as they are not subject to the same pressures and rigorous hygiene and QC checks as a supplier for M&S is. I think the difference is in the taste, and a good restaurant is infinitely better than any supermarket ready meal - I mean have you honestly ever had a supermarket naan bread that even comes close to one freshly made in a tandoor from a good restaurant?
These sort of deals are for convenience and budget but unless you’re comparing to the pits of takeaways then I don’t personally think they come close. I still bought this deal today though as my local (decent) Cantonese restaurant wouldn’t be able to offer a deal like this for a tenner, and it’s perfectly palatable food.

Ok deal but i would rather spend extra couple of pound and get the same from a takeaway which will be much better quality.

29 Aug 17#7
Do you really think it would be much better quality? I very much doubt it.
misterleoni to idealstandard
29 Aug 17#9
Unlikely to be better quality but could be tastier if the restaurant is decent as takeaways don’t need to worry about displaying nutritional content in traffic light form on the front for salt, sugar, fat etc. I always find these sort of meals a bit bland compared with what you’ll get from a local restaurant but for a tenner it’s a good deal.

Agreed. There's a definite distinction between "tastier" and "much better quality" but that seems lost on some who don't question what's gone into their takeaway meal.

food freshly made at a takeaway will always be nicer than prepackaged, precooked and mass produced
if not, get a new takeaway

You might want to consider how fresh that food is. Much of the meat and rice/noodles are prepared a day in advance. Heat OP for the deal.

some of the ingredients may be prepped in advance, sure, as do michelin star restaurants.
admittedly there will be variation, but every takeaway i've ever had has been far tastier than anything which comes from a microwave.

Yes, marinating significantly improves the flavour of meat. It isn't a bad thing because it was prepared in advance...

A Day in advance is better than a week in advance then pre-packaged sitting in a fridge then waiting for you to reheat it. Takeaways don't (and shouldn't for health and safety) reheat food
Groaver to thegamingkinginfo
29 Aug 17#24
Takeaways cook meat and rice and then at a later point (up to 3 days later) will reheat the meat and rice. Health and safety is a separate matter to food hygiene/safety.

Not from my experience. I worked at a few Chinese takeaways before. Meats can be marinated before hand, some meat products are cooked to make other products such as "Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls" but a lot of the meat will be cooked on the day and then used in dishes thorough out the day. Reheating is a health hazards as well as a breech of hygiene within a takeaway kitchen. Rice is never precooked and is always fresh on the day or at the time of order. Same goes for noodles.

Tell me what breach of hygiene legislation it is, exactly? Rice never precooked? Hahaha!

These are buyer minorities, which for reasons of scale means they are not catered to. This is not M&S being evil in their discriminatory decision but simply the common sense reality that if you offer choice for a minority within a meal deal that relies on profit margins spread across each item then you won’t be able to offer as good a deal for the majority.
patrick_000 to joeo2000
29 Aug 17#22
Quite. They have a long selection of meat options, you think they could have made the effort to stick in a veggie option or two. The veggie options in the £10 meal deals usually sell out quickly in the three M&Ss I frequent. I went for the Waitrose £10 meal deal instead today as that has decent veggie options. My local Chinese takeaway is infinitely better than supermarket ready meals & isn’t that much more expensive, so will try there again soon.

Yup, noticed that M&S are very bad in catering for veggies and even as a pescatarian I often struggle to find anything in the meal deals. Considering when eating in east Asia veggie options are often the most common it's a shame.
