I found this when I was looking for a replacement for my leather effect (PU) chair that I had for 5 years. On the old chair, the PU had cracked in quite a few places on the seating area, so I wanted to find a leather one this time. This has a leather base and backrest, although it is bonded leather - but at this price I can't complain. Free next day delivery too. It took about 20 minutes to put together. A bit firmer than my old chair, but other than that, it seems great.

Use a blanket on the cracked seating area, you can easily get another 2+ years life from that old chair.

anybody know if you can apply the brakes to the chair while you're sitting down?

No, they seem to be spring loaded - there is no control for them.

I always get very confused with chairs - especially when I can't sit in them and try them.
Just make sure that the armrests are metal, not plastic. They are structural elements on this sort of chair, as they hold the seat and back together. They also take all of the strain when the user reclines. I have had 2 or 3 like that. They ALL break at the weak points, where the screw-holes are (so there's the least amount of material around there) which bolt the arms to the seat or the back. . Since this model is only rated for "light" usage, they don't appear to be rated for use it in an office for 8 hours a day. Especially if that individual likes to lean back a lot.

Eh??
ive had 2/3 "plastic" armed ones about none ever broke there?? its usually the reclining/pivoting mechanism that goes eventually and the chair starts leaning to one side.
anybody know if this chair can lock in the reclined position? My old chair could until it broke, and not found one since that can

I think it probably does, though haven't seen the chair in person. Says "Tilt lock – Locks the angle of the chairs back and seat tilt"

Comparing it to siting on a rock, I'd go for the rock

For an extra £5 I'd go for the Berlin.
I've had one since the last century and the cracks in the covering don't detract from its comfort.

I've got a Berlin too. About 4.5 years old (found an old email) and cost me £42 back then. Seat and back still look good and comfortable too, 6-8 hrs a day usage. Arms are cracking though, just started in last 2-3 months. However I'd definitely get another when this one finally gives up the ghost.

Do they adjust low?

Had this chair for 3 months now, and am pleased with it. It does not adjust as low as other Office chairs that I have.

I want it to go quite low so thanks for telling me

Was just having a look around and came across this below.
Looks pretty comfortable like the Goliath but half the price
You get what you pay for with chairs, for the amount of time your sat in it its worth paying for something worthwhile. Whilst Herman Miller's are expensive you can pick them up used for pretty cheap, £100-£200. What most people dont know is that all parts are replaceable and fully serviceable/user friendly. In short they will last a life time. I got a Herman Miller Aeron for a hundred quid used and its one of the best purchases Ive ever made (they go for £800-900 new). Check gumtree and ebay!
Genuinely curious, always hear people talking about Herman Miller's, but why are they so expensive? What can it offer to be worth 800-900, other than a brand name?

High end ergonomic chairs are generally expensive. They have to be incredibly user friendly, comfortable for extended periods of time, good for your posture and have to be designed to look incredibly slick like a designer piece of furniture. On top of this they are made to last for life. All replaceable and customisable parts. I agree with you that 800-900 (some editions way above a grand) is super expensive, I have better things to be spending that amount of cash on than a chair, but when you can pick one up cheap 100-200, like I did, its an absolute steal. All I needed to do on mine is tighten up some screws and it was pretty much back to brand new again, took ten minutes, people buy and sell them as a business. Highly recommended, keep your eyes on Gumtree.

I got a similar one for 30 ish quid from viking afew years ago from a deal posted on here. Has been a good chair, not mega comfortable and some of the pleather has torn near the arm rests, and i put better quality bolts in it instead of the crappy ones it came with that kept going loose. But all in all it was a good purchase and hassle free delivery. This one looks abit posher so probs abit better than my one.

Would this be better, worth the price? £130 with Vat - viking-direct.co.uk/a/p…29/
Or something double that price - viking-direct.co.uk/cat…903
So hard to know what chairs are really worth: do need something decent as use it a lot for work. Thanks for any help.
Its cheaper on this link
viking-direct.co.uk/cat….ds
Or if you are nearby £45
ebay.co.uk/itm…m3w
Check out Ebay there are some sellers that sell the returned Viking stock cheap
So Viking basically have the same problem as Staples - all different prices. Thanks for the links and hints - very helpful indeed.
