Can't believe this hasn't been posted yet as its been around over a week (or maybe despite searching -it has been )

I bought one myself last August and its truly amazing - not an electric moped - a normal bike with a battery and hub motor gives pedal assist , so you just pedal effortlessly and it helps you up hills or into the wind etc (up to 18 mph ) .

I like this one as it looks like a bike , not like some of the older ones which ,frankly , just looked plain ugly with the lead/acid batteries they used . This one has the Lithium battery with a 50+ mile range and it weighs in at about 21kg (battery removed) so fits on my Thule roof mount .

I realise many "proper !" cycling enthusiasts don't like E Bikes - but they are great for the not too athletic amongst us to savour our countryside and get 10 -15 miles to the next pub without sweating too much

Normal extra cost savings apply so you could get one for just over £800 :-

a ) BCF (British Cycling Federation) 10% off (membership £22 a year )
b) Buy a Halfords card via your work scheme , zeek or Morrisons for an extra 2-10% off
c) being under £1000 it is also eligible for the "Cycle Scheme" or whatever its called these days .

Worth considering if you like viewing the country side sedately and no longer fit into Lycra :worried:

I've done over 500 miles on mine in the last year (leisure cycling) so if anyone has any questions , doubts, info they would like - I will try to answer..

Well walk back across the city and buy one!

Thinking about buying this, Halfrauds will tell you your new bike has failed the MOT and needs a new exhaust, tyres and an Air Con clean" as you leave the store!

Can only think Graham1979 is just repeating phrases he "thinks " are "cool " with no actual experience of ever buying from Halfords . Takes all sorts I suppose :disappointed:

Really? Bought from Halfrauds, been ripped off by their garages like thousands of others so talking from experience. I'm not sure what is cool for you young people, probably sexting and veganism.

Kwik****. I don't think Halfrauds auto centers do sell bikes either. I think Halfrauds might be the exclusive retailer for this bike which inspires even less confidence in price.

Nope, that's exactly what they'll do....work to this terrible outfit do you? Expensive, poor service and takes advantage of those who know no better. I wouldn't trust Halfords any more than I'd trust Kwik Fit!

Just wondering is the crosscity bike any good ? As looking at getting one as I have this one but want a smaller bike
xtreemneo to gsmstafford
6 Aug 17 #23
The ride feels solid. Bigger tyres help a little bit but the bike is absolutely only for smooth and even tarmac. Any little bumps, the feedback gets transferred easily.

This bike is heavy. Even after folding, it feels big. Overall, I got this to have an option to take it on trains, buses and other public transport in case of any emergency like punctures, heavy downpour and such. Or just take it with me on holidays.

If it's not electric, I wouldn't touch it. I like the bike though.

I would suggest go for a 30 minute test rides which most large Halfords stores offer. I actually tried this many times in different stores before getting it.

6 Aug 17 #40
Oh ok thanks  dose the battery remove from the frame ? Just asking as went in to Halfords and they only have it in the back boxed not on display :disappointed:
rogparki to gsmstafford
7 Aug 17 #44
Yes the battery removes easily from the bike(unlock and take off) and can be charged either in situ on the bike or separately . It has a lock as the batteries alone cost £300 -£400 .

I read the reviews about the power cutting out - its happened to me once in 500 odd miles , after that I cleaned the battery contacts with contact cleaner every couple of weeks and hasn't happened since , another fix (I presume if you use it as a mountain bike ) is to put foam insulation (like you stick round to Draught proof a window or door ) under the battery to eliminate any vibration .

The issues folks winged about with the display is that it only shows km as distance and km/hr as a speed . Too difficult for some I suppose but you are stuck with it on the model I have . I have a wireless cateye speedo from my old bike so for about £20 you get your distance in miles and your speed in mph .

Its good to see all the interest and intelligent comparisons (and Graham 79, takes all sorts :disappointed: ) made on this thread . Takes me back a few years when I joined when "Deals" were discussed , advice given and received , it was a great site  . Sadly today the HUKD sheep just vote hot deals hotter and cold deals colder (without a justifying comment ) - what info can any one gain from that ?

Anyway it is a fair comment that many versions are also available on line - the cheaper ones have lead acid batteries - short range and a heavy battery , The Lithium battery that these have costs £300-£400 anywhere so you aren't going to get much of an E Bike for under £800 until the batteries get cheaper .

E Bikes are available to hire and try at many cycle outlets , I tried one at Rutland Cycling and was instantly hooked - but not by the £2000 price tag, so bought this from Halfords ( about £800 after various discounts )and to be honest this one is every bit as good (and looks better) for less than half the price .

By the way if the power does cut out ,simply reseat the battery (3 secs) switch back on - job done . And at the end of the day you run out of battery power you don't have to "lug " it home - you just pedal it like a normal bike (complete with gears ) and off home you go - albeit on a heavy bike .

The bikes components are all of Far Eastern origin so I expected the bike to go up in price by 20 % - we can't avoid the 20% drop in the value of the pound due to Brexit , so its no surprise that the bike was selling at £1200 (genuinely) for the last 8 months . A cracking price , and at least with Halfords (a high street store) you can try it for free before deciding to buy . Cant see these staying at this price for long .

Yup, surprised as well. Just bought one. 960, less another 10% for Cycle Club membership, so £864 all in. Had a go before buying, quite a nice bike for getting around town and effotless up the hills. Remains to be seen what the battery range will be.

Gone up in price a fair bit since last year. It was £999 and Halfords did their usual periodic discounting down to £699.
A few people on Pedelecs forum bought them. There were quite a lot of complaints about the motor cutting out due to dodgy battery connections in the battery holder. Seem to remember there was some probs with display as well.

6 Aug 17 #21
I've had this on my wish list for quite a while but no other information other than the reviews.

amazon.co.uk/dp/…c=1

I'd love some feedback also from anyone that has DIY'ed an electric bike, especially a similar build .

Li-ion batteries seem to be a bit harder to find but can be found under £200.

Edit: I just noticed you are looking a front wheel but I have seen both front and back wheels on Amazon. Remember though anything over 250 watts becomes illegal.
Pateo to GlentoranMark

I can't understand why they don't include a battery with this kit? Surely the idea is your buying a complete kit that includes everything that's needed? Doesn't make sense!!!
GlentoranMark to Pateo
6 Aug 17 #31
Agree. You have to match the battery to the voltage and it's no easy choice if your a noob to the whole idea. You can buy 3 x 12v lead acid batteries for far cheaper but you have to wire them up. You'd have thought sellers on Ebay and Amazon would also sell batteries to match as one is no good without the other.

I was tempted by the 2 stroke engine a few weeks ago but it's not a green solution and (although unlikely for me) there is a small chance of being stopped by police, getting points on a license and facing the wrath of the courts for what seems to me such a minor offence.

So you have to charge the battery every 50 miles? Tempted but can see myself forgetting and having to lug 30kg of bike home manually! I do about 30 a week commuting so just charging each weekend would do me, but I do another 15 miles to a country pub once a week too if the weather is good.
Biker.Jeff to tek-monkey
6 Aug 17 #20
Different people will get a different mileage range with the same Ebike, there are a lot of variables to take into account. Your weight, what assistance level you use and how much pedaling you do yourself. Hills are the main thing that depletes a battery the quickest. Also when the battery is depleted to around 50/60% you start to feel the power of the motor dropping off.
One thing though, if your battery becomes dead when out & about, you can still get home because the Ebike just becomes an ordinary pedal bike, albeit a rather heavy one.

I own this bike, purchased a year ago for about £660 after various discounts/gift card/quidco etc
Ride to work daily on it in all weathers, just about to clock up 3000 miles, no problems.

I swapped the tyres for Schwlabe Energisers (never had a puncture) and added mudguards, pannier rack etc

For anyone thinking of ditching the car and going over to an ebike to commute, I can thoroughly recommend it. Not only does it cost pennies to run, it's a great stress buster, and unlike a conventional cycle, you arrive cool and not needing a shower. If you can get it on the cycle to work scheme, it'll bring the cost down to about £680

On the eco setting I can achieve 45 miles, and arrive back with about 10-15% battery remaining. That includes a big hill on that tour. That's averaging about 14 miles per hour on a flatish route, so the battery claims are realistic. I'm no featherweight either.

The bike will offer as much or as little assistance as you need (4 levels). If you wanna roll along without much effort to build up fitness you can, as as you improve you can drop the assist level down. A great way to get back into cycling

I have a normal road and hybrid bike, use these a lot too. Don't think by using something this for commute you'll lose interest in normal bikes, they coexist happily in my life !

Lots of info about this and other ebikes over at the friendly pedelec forums - pedelecs.co.uk/forum/

Don't get put off by the occasional cut out, yes, it does happen, but considering I ride every day (14 miles), it might happen to me once every couple of months. You just power button back on and away you go

If you have any questions on this bike more than happy to answer if I can - cheers

A few comments.

Re. Halfords. I went to 2 branches to test ride this bike. The first couldn't have been more useless. No interest or product knowledge, so walked away. 2nd. were brilliant, knew a lot and answered all my queries. So probably more about the staff than the company.

Re. Bike weight. Yes it is heavy. But I rode it for some distance power off and it was fine so long as steep hills were avoided. I think if you want off road ability, a conversion of an existing bike might be better.

Re. Cutting out. This actually happened on the test ride after I read about it online! However, current stock has a different controller which (apparently) does not do this. It can be easily identified by having white graphics printed on the control box on the handlebars. The demo/display bike was old stock and had the old controller which is all black.

I recommend looking at the Pedalecs site and youtube for info before buying.
rugman to airbus330
6 Aug 17 #26
If you want more off road ability, go for the MTB version called the Vulcan, same electronics, battery etc halfords.com/cyc…ike

My missues has the new version of this with the white graphics on the controller (and different control buttons on left hand side of handlebars), and I can confirm it has cutout (albeit only once but others on the pedelec forums have confirmed too), so Suntour/Halfords haven't cracked the problem. However, would recommend that buyers go for the newer version(if you order to be delivered to store you should get the new one as we found, there is some old stock I think left instore)
airbus330 to rugman
6 Aug 17 #27
Thanks for that info, I hadn't seen reports that the later version cuts out too. Well, I guess its a suck it and see situation, and the advantage of buying from a local store is that it can be taken back. Seems ok so far, fingers crossed!
I think I'd be inclined to go for a crank motor for offroad.
rugman to airbus330
6 Aug 17 #28
Yep, crank motors are generally recommended for more offroad stuff, however, most start from nearly twice the price of the Vulcan. In this guy's hands the Vulcan performs remarkably well
rugman
6 Aug 17 #29
Oh. one more tip regarding cut outs, I recommend that you take the battery key with you, especially on long trips - a couple of times when mine has cut out, I needed to remove the battery from the frame for a few seconds and re-insert to get going again. The other times I could just reset on the battery button
CraigT1963 to rugman
6 Aug 17 #36
I have the Vulcan with the same electrics and initially had the cut out problem (probably half a dozen times over the first 200 miles or so). One of the reviews of the Crossfire on the Halfords site recommended putting a small strip of velcro in the bottom end of the battery holder. I did this and haven't had an issue in over 500 miles. Probably just gives the battery a slightly snugger fit so connection isn't lost through vibration. Another cause of cutouts is a safety feature - it will happen if the motor gets too hot. I think initially the motor might be a bit tight causing heat build up, and loosens up with use (just an opinion). As I said 500 trouble free miles since. The Vulcan is a great bike for the price - I ride mainly off road and get a good 40 miles plus range and I'm 15 stone

The problem with buying an ebike online is support if it goes wrong. Difficult to return etc.. You only need to look at some of the ebay suppliers to see that they are not bicycle dealers, but are importers of the latest fad from China. This is a newish technology and from reading reviews online appears to have teething problems quite often, that being the case I like the idea of being able to return the item for service.

Hub motor walk away, nothing to see here.
rugman to SpamJavelin
6 Aug 17 #37
Nothing wrong with a powerful hub motor setup, just like this one is. Half the price of of where most crank drive bikes start.

Decent rear hub drive = ideal commuter. Plus less wear on the drivetrain (chains, cogs etc) and a lot lot cheaper when things go wrong (£800+ for a new crank drive Bosch motor)
SpamJavelin to rugman
6 Aug 17 #38
You are right on the price of course but having ridden a few ebikes I wouldn't buy anything other than a crank powered model. Just feels more natural with the power distributed better without the 'push' effect. Each to their own of course.
redcup to SpamJavelin
7 Aug 17 #43
The unnatural "push" effect is a function of the type of control system employed rather than whether it is crank or hub drive.

Cheaper hub drive bikes tend to have cadence sensors only and the power levels limit speed to different levels rather than current (torque).

The Suntour bikes ( as in the crossfire-e and vulcan-e) have a torque sensor system and ride much more naturally - I would definitely recommend giving one a try if you haven't already - it may surprise you if you can live with the possibility of power cutouts.

Bought this bike last Tuesday 1st Aug. Asked the guy in Halfords could the display be changed from Km to Miles after a few button presses he did it ( didn't see what he pressed though) Had the stock tyres changed to Schwalbe Marathon Plus puncture resistant tyres (£21 each) free fitting. Been happy with bike so far no cut outs, the controller/display can be removed on this new model, think it couldn't on last years model.

Good choice - The Marathon Plus tyres for peace of mind (best puncture resistant tyres available ) . I thought about changing to them (the £21 is the best price anywhere) but opted for slime instead -easier  . No issues so far with punctures -fingers crossed .

It's probs good for the money, and convenient as most of us are near to a halfords. But if I was buying an ebike I would have a look at a Wisper 905SE (on variosu sites for £1039 for 11ah battery, £1239 for 16ah battery, £1079 at halfords online, also afew ex display models knocking about on some sites last time I looked).

They are Austrian made/designed I believe, various European police departments use them apparently. They are hybrid though, so no suspension forks, but perfectly capable of fairly bumpy trails.

For those who have got the new model, press and hold the "i" key for around 6 seconds to toggle between KMH and MPH
airbus330
9 Aug 17 #50
Had the bike for a few days now and it is great. I have two massive hills near me and it just makes short work of them. I'm reasonably fit and find that battery assist is not really needed on most of a journey, just turn it on for the hills, so yesterdays 15 mile trip used only 1 bar of battery. The bike itself doesn't feel that heavy on the go.

Only gripe is the speed cut out at 15mph, it needs to be 25mph in traffic. Does anyone know if there is a way to hack the Suntor box to de-restrict it?
