Great printer with separate ink carts which can be refilled or you can buy very cheap compatibles from Amazon. I.e. £1 or less each. Our first one printed thousands of pages before we had ink blockages and we replaced with exactly the same one. Looked and looked and couldn't get for anywhere near this price though. Only downside is no scanner, which is handy to have at times.

Handy? I'd say it's pretty damm essential to have a scanner these days, to be honest I didn't even know you still get standalone scanners nor printers that ain't all in one in the year 2017 either(shock)

Plenty of scanner apps on phones. Unless you're going for a printer with an ADF scanner, there's little point.

Essential?! Really?! I can scan stuff at work, I can count on one hand how often I've needed to. I can take a photo of something and send that by email usually, on rare occasions I need to. Most printers have scanners so most people view them as essential. Yes to some they will be, but not most. My photos are stored on phone or camera and can be airprinted to the printer, as can documents I need printing.

Well you clearly have not needed to deal with all the stuff I've had to as regarding legal stuff, finances, power of attorney etc etc etc. Doubt there was a week last year that someone from a bank, legal firm or governmental office somewhere in the UK, Austria, Germany or Isle of Man didn't want scanned copies of something or other.
Oh and when your work is being the full time carer of an infirm parent then to 'scan stuff at work' involves having the scanner, yep you've guessed it, there in the house

Sure some will need to scan lots of things like you. But to say it is "essential" for everyone just because you need one? I don't think your situation is quite reflective of most people really. The average person in the street doesn't have a major need to scan documents regularly, so it's not "essential" in most cases.
