A good alternative to leasing if you're not worried about all the bells and whistles. Personally I would pay more and get one of the autos but for the price to get into a new Merc it's a bargain. A 3 year old car costs £15K on Autotrader. You have to sign up for the finance but you can cancel within 14 days if you wish.

Heat added for a Mercedes but they are not now built the same. Artico leather indeed.... It's plastic lol. The days of super mercs are gone. Another car for the masses

Can't speak for the C Class but the 2015 E Class was just as luxurious as the old 2001 E Class. Can't comment on reliability though as I don't own one now.

Just like any other car manufacturer they build to a price. If you buy an A class or a basic C class like this one expect to get what you pay for. If you're buying an S class, GL or SL then there is a huge difference. Mercedes were way worse from 00-07 anyway.

I've had two Merc's, an ML and a GL, I certainly wouldn't have another one probably two of the worst cars I've ever had for problems and terrible service from main dealers.

This sounds slightly bogus: the claim appears to be that one could buy this car for £18,995 including a £4,770 deposit contribution from the finance company, then cancel the loan agreement within 14 days. I think the loan company would want its £4,770 back making the price £24765,

I had a 2009 c class from new which i changed for a 2012 and i now have a 2014 M class but although i obviously am a fan i have to say i will be looking elsewhere for my next car. To me Mercedes seem to have reduced the quality of the c class as the car became more popular. Just my opinion and they are still nice cars. Heat added for the price

I also suspect that the Finance Company wouldn't simply let you walk away with their £4,770 contribution unchallenged? If they do then it's a good deal if you're after a C Class?
It's interesting to see the huge discounts available and the cars that these are available on, on the DrivetheDeal website. Presumably these are marques/models that can't be shifted without these huge discounts?

I can't speak for Mercedes Finance but I bought a VW through their finance and was able to do this. A quick call to a dealer would confirm this.
othen to Trickytimes
6 Aug 17#11
So you bought a VW on hire purchase or a PCP, got a depostit contribution from the finance company, cancelled it straight away, and the finance company let you keep the contribution?
I've never bought a car on HP or a PCP, but I do find that rather incredible to me. I always pay cash for cars, but if that is possible I'll certainly do it next time (and why doesn't everyone do it?).
rprp to othen
6 Aug 17#12
I did exactly that with mine. Bought a used car for which they gave me a 1k dealer deposit if I took out 13.9% finance. There is nothing they can do. You are entitled to settle within the cooling off period with no penalty.
othen to rprp

Because MSE don't get commission from that?

6 Aug 17#22
It is no scam. The right to cancel a finance agreement and fund your purchase by other means within 14 days is enshrined in UK consumer law. A gifted deposit contribution cannot be clawed back if you cancel the finance within the "cooling off" period. Many people don't have the means to lay their hands on the money to do this, but for those that do or have a cheaper loan set up elsewhere it is a legit thing to do, athough the finance company won't like it.

This still sounds very unlikely to succeed to me.

All I can say is that it's succeeded a couple of times for us and if you just have a search on motoring sites you will find lots of similar reports.

7 Aug 17#31
So you have actually done this yourself several times? It seems incredible to me that the manufacturers and finance companies allow it. I always pay cash fo cars, and generally I find that doing so is worth £5,000 off a £30,000 car (that does not work with Porsche though - no discounts!) - so perhaps the amounts are no dissimilar. I'm still amazed this is not widely advertised by MSE &c.
josephallen to othen
7 Aug 17#34
As a rule, you will get better discounts by taking finance than you will cash. Generally, the interest paid on the loan will erode the value of the additional discount, but pay it off immediately if you can and you are quids in. Cash isn't king as far as new car sales are concerned.
CHUNGHO1 to josephallen
7 Aug 17#37
So this is the Hire Purchase finance option, not PCP, where you give the deposit and monthly payments to own the car however you settle the full amount of £18,995 in the next day or two by ringing up the finance company? Am I right in saying that?
othen to CHUNGHO1
7 Aug 17#38
I'm interested in this. I think you must be right: from what I understand it would not work with a PCP deal where the driver never owns the car, only with a HP contract where the car secures the loan.
CHUNGHO1 to othen
7 Aug 17#39
I don't know if PCP would work in this instance but unless you pay off the deposit, monthly payments and the balloon payment as well in one go, wouldn't the car be yours? I always thought it only applies to hire purchase, unless the contract terms says something about not allowed to pay it off? I don't know, i'll let someone else enlighten us all.
twinkle to othen
8 Aug 17#40
I don't see why this would make any difference. I've received manufacturer discount on a PCP deal (Ford) but actually went on to complete the whole deal paying off the ballooon payment....but I could have paid off all monies owing at any time during the contract...you just ask for a settlement figure from the finance company and pay it off. T
othen to twinkle
8 Aug 17#41
Thank you for that. I'm still not convinced it would work with a PCP: If I rent a £25,000 car under a PCP (so I never own the car) and get a £5,000 deposit contribution, then I decide I don't want to rent the car the day after I drive it away and pay the finance company what I owe for the rental plus what the car would be worth in 3 years' time - will I will still be allowed to keep the £5,000? I can see that might work with a HP agreement where the car is being used to secure the loan, but not under a rental plan like a PCP. Perhaps I'm just too old fashioned.
monkeyhanger75 to othen
7 Aug 17#32
It is fact. I have done it (for my wife's A1, which I settled in full a day into the cooling off period). It is a consumer right to do so. Try doing a bit of research before doubting, and then continuing to doubt when multiple people tell you the same thing.
The dealership doesn't want you to do it because they won't get a kickback from the finance. The finance company don't want you to do it because they won't get your interest.
On a PCP for a car with good residuals and a 6% interest rate, about 1/3 of your monthly payment is interest.
twinkle to othen
6 Aug 17#19
We do...and the deposit contribution is usually from the manufacturer.
twinkle to othen
6 Aug 17#21
You are not canceling it...you are settling it. There's a world of difference - you are entitled to settle any loan at any time and pay the appropriate amount of interest owed under the consumer regulations act. Your agreement says you have agreed to borrow X amount of money at Y level of interest over Z number of years. If you choose to pay off X 15 days later that's up to you...so you just pay 15 days of interest.
ninjin to Trickytimes
6 Aug 17#13
I have done the same thing with mini finance. Cancel after a couple of months, you will only pay a few £ in interest as the loan is HP so they can only charge you interest on the amount outstanding and period.

I have had a current C class and it's a fine car. Feel good interior, makes you feel like you are driving something nice. A BMW or Audi may drive better but I find you dont have the nice interior surroundings of the current C class.
However.....

Just speak to drive the deal.Very respected car broker but most of their deals now are based on you taking the manufacturer finance to get the discount .They will confirm you can pay the car off .They sell thousands of cars so benefit from dealer contributions .Shame it's not off the amg sport version.

Should be around £299/month if there's zero customer deposit, assuming it's a 36 month PCP. Balloon payment of about £10k.
Not too shabby.

7 Aug 17#35
That is an interesting opinion, but I notice that from the same Drive the Deal page there is a MERCEDES-BENZ SLC DIESEL ROADSTER SLC 250D AMG LINE 2DR 9G-TRONIC on sale for £30.495 against a list price of £47,825 or a saving of £17,330 (no HP based deposit contribution - just a discount on the cash price). If I hadn't bought a Porsche Boxster this year I'd have one of those for cash and save the 5.6% interest.
adamski8080
9 Aug 17#42
PCP is not a rental. It is a purchase agreement with a deferred balloon payment. This can be settled at any time and contributions towards this by the lender or manufacturer will NOT be reclaimed. As a car dealer I know this for a fact. As previously stated the majority of buyers do not settle early so the interest charged compensates for the contribution. Those who can settle early however benefit.
