Can some explain the attraction of Echos? You need to be in the same room, then you give it a verbal instruction. Why not walk a few steps to your computer, or use a mobile device like a tablet all over the house? They're not cheap either.

Can you tell your laptop to play the radio or a selected track? Ask it to set a timer or remind you to do something? Maybe your computer will respond to voice commands while you're up a ladder painting the ceiling with white sticky hands?...

My missus was exactly of that opinion when I told her I'd bought one on Prime Day. Now she'd probably get rid of me first! It's the complete convenience of the thing, really. We really only got it for the music but then realised it can do so much more - we now give our (EDF) energy readings to it, we have Evohome connected to it now so can change the temp in each of our rooms by asking Alexa! She's even looking at Philips Hue lighting now! Plus no-one can deny it's great when people come visiting. Oh, and it can do great fart sounds as well :astonished: . Plus, who wants to carry a tablet on them all round the house? I guess it's the same argument about a lawnmower and pair of garden shears...

I felt the same, I didn't see the appeal of voice tech. But after being given a Dot as a gift from work, I'm sold. My Dot sits in the kitchen and gets used frequently, to play music, ask for the date or time quicker than hunting for a phone, add to shopping lists if I notice the fridge is missing something - and it's so simple to use, my four year old can tell it to play her favourite music.
I have Prime so my experience with things such as music may be biased, but you can upload your own music and Amazon authority any CDs you have bought... I would say get a Dot, does everything a full Echo can do and the speaker is fine.

I love mine but to make it truly effective you want things such as hue lighting or Tado heating. I've got 4 dots around the house and one echo in the living room. Well worth it! Just debating getting this one with a louder speaker for the kitchen while I am cooking and listening to my podcast. My kids love it as well as we are prime members and they get kids bop music or something like that. Asking it the time to turn on speific lights add things to my grocery list, whats the weather. Or random fact that come to mind. Its like having siri on standby but way cooler. But thats my 2 cents.

Does anyone find it a bit of a ballache in regards to finding you specific playlists?
I cannot quite remember exactly the commands, but something like 'play a chilled 90s playlist', 'play a slow 80s playlist' etc resulted in it either just playing a 90s or 80s playlist, or something by Ollie fucking Murs.
Does it have any more joy if you set Spotify as the default player? With Spotify the default player, is it as good or better in general?
Also, can you set it to output through Spotify on another device? So, I'll have my Android TV Spotify App playing music through my AV receiver.... can I still use the Echo commands, but still have it play through the receiver, via the TV app? Hope that makes sense.

I use if for home automation control, the DOT is £50 (Normal price) so its cheaper than Google Home so the best way to control a smart home via voice. I could control the smart home by my phone but then i have to find the phone, unlock it, load the app ... so much easier to use a Amazon Echo Dot

24 Aug 17#62
I've got an Echo Dot on Prime Day and it's been somewhat useful in the bedroom for settings alarms and listening to some music while falling asleep (the sleep timer is useful). However, I don't think the "Alexa eco-system" is really worth it so far. Amazon's voice recognition is lightyears beyond Google's (once trained, at least) - and so is its overall usefulness if you're not having various smart-home products. Even then it's basically just a speech-enabled switch. Taking audio notes etc. can be useful, but only as long as you're not using such solutions on your phone anyway.
I've been hesitating to buy a Google Home due to the price and it's overall still just being a gimmick (I have too many of these), but I find myself using Google Assistant on my phone more than Alexa after a month or so. It's really too bad (and somewhat surprising) that Amazon hasn't been able to improve the platform much in the last two years.

Mine controls my curtains in my house (can open/close all at once etc), ask Alexa if it's going to rain, if not ask her to open my observatory roof, I can ask her to make my vacuum clean the downstairs, she can turn my fireplace on, I can get her to order stuff from Amazon for me, I can set different colour lights, I can increase the heating temp, I can turn on my air conditioning, I can ask her to arm my security system and cameras, working on getting her to control my sprinkler.
And that barely scratches they surface of what you can do. Add a rm broadlink pro in to the mix, or raspberry pi and you can do anything.

You are missing one very big point when you say about using the echo for controlling lights and that it's lazy.
If you were to use say Philips Hue bulbs then they allow you to turn a normal bulb and an on/off switch into a dimmer bulb without having to put a dimmer switch in.
So as an example,I will be pumping iron in my home gym and listening to music via my echo and it's starting to get dark and I want the lights up a bit,i just simply say set lights in gym to 50%,this is far quicker than reaching for my phone and opening up the app to do the same thing, all the time I'm being far from a couch spud and actuallyit allows me to carry on doing something far more physical than pressing a light switch that can only be on or off.

Remember it's a voice service ... a phone app should soon do what it does I think... unless we want something always dedicated for it ...like a dslr camera or a tv... I still don't feel the need for it to play music(at least not for every song), or build a shopping list or ask about the weather... or probably newer versions may do more of the others ....same way as the phone did ...i.e. maybe will have a camera i.e make a call, monitor the house automatically, control temperature automatically... etc

Ah, I've been lucky then, worked every time
To those asking what's the point, aside from the songs and timers people have suggested it's usefulness is also amplified if you have other smart kit in the home. I have the Logitech Harmony, Hue lights and Nest and Alexa speaks and controls them all. So when I say "turn on the TV" the TV gets switched on, put to the correct HDMI input, the Sound bar gets turned on as well as the Sky DVR and the Hue Bloom behind the telly. I can then use verbal commands to change channel too.
In the morning when I'm getting ready Alexa also tells me the status of my tube line, and reads out my diary appointments.
Combined with IFTTT opens up a whole host of other possibilities too, such as flashing lights when timers are up, letting the kids know when I'm 50 metres from home and letting me know when it's going to rain (although those aren't necessarily using Alexa - it just becomes part of the smart ecosystem)

The curtain track is from Forest drapery. The remote is RF based (think there are zwave versions too). Wasn't cheap mind, but I had them fitted professionally as for bay window. Could probably get RF or ir curtain rails for a couple of hundred or so and fit yourself.
I have a broadlink RM pro (£25 quid), and the RM tasker plugin. Any device with an RF remote will work so even the cheap RF plug sockets.
Have to use the terms on/off rather than open or close, so 'alexa, curtains on' to close etc, maybe when the proper RM Alexa plugin is released it might change.
