What's the sound on the Dot actually like? I've had conflicting accounts. I often listen to the radio on my mobile and don't mind that too much.

23 Aug 17#46
So do you need prime to get the most out of this ?
Also there is a google one now and is the dot worth getting instead of the big version ?
shakerstevens to The.Crew.Designs
23 Aug 17#48
The dot is fantastic, and if you can link it to a hi-fi via jack cable or bluetooth or to a bluetooth soundbar then the dot is the better/more cost effective solution. But if you don't already have a speaker in range of where you want the echo/dot to go then the full size echo will be the better choice as the speaker in the dot is quite basic, similar to what you have in a smartphone - good enough for timers and news reports, and as a low volume speaker. Prime will help you get the most out of it in terms of music, but you can still link it to free services such as tune in radio even without having amazon prime.
The.Crew.Designs to shakerstevens
23 Aug 17#49
I have a good speaker so I could get dot and link it to it ?
shakerstevens to The.Crew.Designs
23 Aug 17#50
Thats exactly what I do. And you have the choice of using 3.5mm jack plug on the back of the dot to connect to your good speaker or bluetooth
The.Crew.Designs to shakerstevens
23 Aug 17#51
Thank you.... does the dot need my speaker to make any noise or just for music. Will I need my speaker and the dot on all the time to work ?
shakerstevens to The.Crew.Designs
23 Aug 17#54
You use the speaker for everything, otherwise you have to physically disconnect it (if cable) or say "alexa, disconnect my speaker" if you are on bluetooth and no longer want to use the speaker and revert back to the dot speaker. If the speaker is off the dot will still look for it until you disconnect (physically or bluetooth)

Or 3.5 to stereo rca/phono for a proper hifi, that's how I have my 2 dots connected.

Not sure why deal has been expired, I just ordered a white one for delivery to store tomorrow. With the wife's staff discount and some unused clubcard vouchers, ended up costing £24. Very happy
....& i got to use a load of Clubcard vouchers too. :sunglasses:

I thought very carefully about this: 1) The speakers are quite tinny sounding when playing loud music - tech review 2) if I need lights on I will get up and turn them on - I don't wish to be a lazy coach potato. 3) I have news and weather on my iPhone. 4) if I need to order anything from Amazon I quickly do it via the app. So even at £89 this is an average overpriced gadget. No thanks!

I was like you once... I tested the waters with the dot when they had 3 for £75 glitch recently. I had no idea what I was doing when I took it out of the box and configured it. I wondered what on Earth I would use it for until tried:
Alexa what time is it? 'The time is 10:12am' Neat I thought..
Alexa what's the weather like today? "It's going to be couldy with a chance of rain" Oh right, that's good to know.
That's my first experience of it while I was cooking and cleaning on the kitchen. I continued asking it to do things like set a timer for my cooking, play me some music and it did both really well! The wife even uses it! :O
Now I use Alexa daily to play music when I wake up, set timers, give me the best news roundup ever! Turn on and off lamps that are in an awkward location and to give me silly facts and information that pops into my head when I think of it.
I can even ask to listen to Radio 4 or any other station and it plays out through the internet. Perfect for having when you're doing some painting.
I love how I can just get on with things and talk to it rather than having to dig my phone out all the time.
I'd borrow a dot from someone or just buy a cheap one that you could always flog on eBay so you haven't lost anything if for some reason you don't like it.

Spoke to Tesco Direct first thing this morning as I purchased 2 for £138 but it took £178 out of my bank and shown £178 on receipt. They advised because I had purchased it at the exact time the promotion was taken down, they will refund £40 to my card. Thanks for a great deal OP and other commenters.

2 Echos for £138 is an excellent deal. I bought 3 dots and it's annoying that my bluetooth speaker that's connected to one dot goes into sleep mode. I've used an old Logitech PC 2.1 setup above kitchen cupboards to overcome that issue, but sound from up high is not perfect. I can't substantiate this deal, but hot from me.
