anyone knows what Android version on this table? Thanks

Unfortunately for anyone who sees it as a otherwise good deal, it runs Lollipop.

1GB is pretty bad but Lollipop was the Windows Vista of Android below version 5.1.1. Defiantly cold for me.

My LG G4 runs lollipop, it does everything I want it to do and runs every app fine. I will upgrade it to 7.0 when it's available but it won't change what I do on the phone one bit. Android update geeks need to get a life!
greenandwhite to retro_pie

You obviously have no interest in controlling the permissions that apps have to your phone. Nobody has said Lollipop can't run apps. The majority of apps in the Play Store only require Android 2.3 as a minimum and another good chunk of them require Android 4.0.3 and above so Lollipop is clearly able, given decent enough hardware, to run most apps out there.

BUT.... It was a disaster of an OS that improved almost nothing from the previous major release KitKat, the only time this has happened in Android history. It was so badly received that Marshmallow was developed and released just a few months after it and Marshmallow really was the game changer Lollipop failed to be with improvements across the board particularly in regard to security and battery life. Apart from that do you have any idea how far behind you are in Android security patches and therefore vulnerable to far more exploits than "Android update geeks"?

Do you consider Windows updates too geeky for you to bother with since your 20 year old Windows 98 machine still does everything you think you need it to? Of course not. You would at least install every security update. Google releases Android patches every month for the same reason Microsoft rolls out monthly security bulletins. But you don't need them eh? Good luck with that and waiting for Android 7 to be released for your rusty old phone. Android 8 is already on the scene and most phones that were able to be upgraded to Android 7 are now on 7.1.1. There's a minimum firmware requirement for Android 7 and it's been out for so long if your phone manufacturer hasn't even updated you to Android 6 yet then your phone will never see Android 7. You should be able to update it to Android 6 yourself though. Should be plenty of custom ROMs on XDA that you can flash. Do that and then come back and say your phone isn't running a lot better than it is now. Spoiler alert : You won't.

Amazon tablets are nothing but a marketing con, completely unsuable for children (they don't have enough of their own spending power for Amazon's liking), but this is simply obsolete rubbish.

I have to disagree, my daughter and I have the Kindles( fire HD 8 2017 ) , bought on offer for just £50.Aside from shockingly bad cameras there isn't much we could complain about.Assuming you are an Amazon prime user and use primarily their apps, the Fire 8 is a pretty good device - sturdily built, with an acceptable screen, very good battery life and decent speakers, even the silk browser is all right. The fire os 5.4 has some features missing comparing to newer androids but so far I have not needed any of them.

All depends what you need. My daughter gave up her galaxy Tab Pro and went for the fire hd as it does what she needs and unlike Samsung holds the charge well. Yes, there are much better tablets on the market than the Kindle but not at comparable price. Personally, I quite like it.

I agree with you too. :-)

Ps.
Where where you able to hook up an Amazon Fire 8, and/or Amazon Fire 8 HD for around £50 from?.

I wouldn't mind an Amazon HD 8 for around £50 too!. :-D

Pps.
Was your Amazon 8/8 HD with 8GB?, or rather with 16GB instead?

Thanx. :-)

last month (I think it was a Prime day or something on 11/07) Amazon was selling these at £49.99 and it was the 16gb, all four colours were available at this price.

WOW!, hmmmmmm, I clearly dropped the ball on that one?. :-(

Hehehe, thanx for the head's up, but though, when come the longgggg Black Friday/Cyber Monday Weekend thing, hopefully a similar price to that £50 for the 8 inch one will bounce back again ... :-)

You're entitled to disagree, but you do actually prove the point. This is what Amazon want. No one would say that the hardware is bad for the money (I don't think anyone would say it was great either). We have a Kindle Fire tablet in our house; it's terrible as anything more than a conduit for between your bank account and Amazon's. It's been made to be as flexible as a block of cement. It's main purpose is to tie you into Amazon. That's not a bad thing if you make your connections as a consumer knowing what you are doing... I have a regular Kindle and have voluntarily tied myself to Amazon's ebook service. However, try as Amazon might, I won't be conned into exclusively using their music and video services through the rigidity of the Amazon One-click Marketing Tablet (AKA Kindle Fire).
7777777 to Pokey

and this is what I want :). I am with Amazon as long as their offer interest me.At this moment they often represent good value for money and are convenient. If that change,I will leave.

I recall this very same Alcatel Tablet being Posted some x-months back (with the very same £15 Google Play Store Credit ... )

And from Argos then too I believe?

And now (like then), it amassed 100's of degree's in HEAT!, despite being also rubbished by allllll then too?, hahahaha, I don't know?, lol ;-)

And ironically again, the only reason it amassed mass heat here was because of the £15 Google Play Credit again!, otherwise ...

It's cool though, hehehe.

But £15 FREE Google Play Credit aside, is this Tablet actually worth anything though?, or ..... thanx.

It seems alright, build quality is fine, screen is fine, sound is a bit tinny. It it was £49, plays topsy and tim and some Lego games fine, daughter is pleased as the screen works. Not had an incompatible app yet, movie playback is clear. Seems quite good for the price. I have a Lenovo tab2 10" BTW.

hhFire 7 1024 x 600 IPS, this 1280 x 800 IPS -Fire only has 60% of pixels as this.
Fire 4 * 1.3Ghh, this 4*1.3Gha - same.
Fire - no GPS, this can run Kindle app I assume.
Fire 8GB, this 16GB
Camera, 2MP this 5MP.

This is good value, Fire likely only rated for its better, possibly long term, Amazon support.
Alcatel has near zero support.

Personally I woukd avoid the Fire for its very disapponting screen resolution. OK at £30 or £35 when on offer I guess but 8GB memory is pain too.
rcom
16 Aug 17 #6
The Amazon Fire 7 is the same price as this and gets good reviews. On paper at least, this beats the Fire hands down for specs. Same CPU and RAM but bigger screen with better resolution, 2 x the storage capacity, better cameras, no Amazon ads and £15 of Play credit on top.

The only downside I see is the same CPU and RAM handling a higher resolution will make it a bit slower in some games.
7777777 to rcom

fire OS is actually quite slim and very well optimised for kindle tablets, you can't compare them.
rcom to 7777777
16 Aug 17 #17
Yes, and it has Amazon's apps constantly running in the background. Personally I haven’t found the Fire 7 any quicker or slower than any other similar Android tablet with 1GB of RAM.

Build quality will likely be better than an Alcatel but specs wise, this doesn't 'seem' too bad for the price.
jadamso to 7777777
16 Aug 17 #18

I actually agree with both posters. The Fire OS is actually a pretty nice OS fairly snappy and no obvious bloatware but I also run one with a Nexus ROM installed and I haven't found any noticeable difference between the two in terms of speed.

Sorry OP but I've also had terrible experiences of alcatel pixi products but to be fair, that was the mobile and not the tablet. I haven't voted as I've not used the tablet itself but won't buy an product from them again. Others will know better than me but I guess it would be a decent deal if you were to use the tablet to stream from the likes of iplayer, netflix, 4oD etc..and if you were likely to buy £15 worth of Google Play credit irrespective of the deal. HTH and thanks for the post OP.

I bought a couple of Alcatel Pixi phones for my girls a while back. I won't go on about exactly how terrible they were but i will say the free £15 Google Play Credit was a right load of hassle to sort. I can't remember the exact hoops i had to jump through (before just giving up) but thought it worth highlighting it is unlikely to be straight-forward.

Makes for a decent car GPS, but a bit slow for other things.

If yiu compate to the Fire this does about OK, the Fire screen being low resolution.
Steelman111
16 Aug 17 #12
Alcatel tablets/phones have such low build quality you'd probably think they were made out of cardboard when first holding one, the plastic is really light and creaky and the screen on the pixi 3 (phone) I had didn't feel like glass and could be scratched by a light tap from a finger nail, god knows what it was.

Needless to say I've had cheap unbranded chinese crap off Ebay that's been better quality, I'd never pay for an Alcatel product again no matter how good value it seemed.
alex_uk
16 Aug 17 #10
Alcatel is sucks as phone(very slow processor and sucks as quality build) and the phone contain their own version of App Store which often load the adware apps. These apps are drain battery, shows ads and use pay as you go credit for data and premium sms.
