Pretty simple, 6 months of What HiFi magazine delivered to your door and a free Jam Heavy Metal HX-P920 speaker, which usually costs around £79.99

The speaker got a five star review from What HiFi back in January whathifi.com/jam…iew

Probably the most biased review magazine i have ever read, with the exception of STUFF. It panders to the advertisers.

I myself would use something impartial and independent, not a magazine as such however a forum :

avforums.com/for…ms/

Definitely more honest opinions and info on how to's, then search here for the wanted bargain and it's a win win.
Hope this helps.

AVF - a site that actively restricts access for adblockers & spams the user with nag messages to remove it. I'm sure their reviews are totally independent of the ad revenue stream they insist on forcing on users.

I would say that the magazine is useful (I subscribe to it) to keep up to date with what is going on, as long as the reviews are taken with a pinch of salt.

Second that. Seen "reviews" for £80 Monster HDMI cables describing the colours, motion, clarity, etc, etc. All total BS. Been proven all but the most extreme cases (4k, 60fps, 3D) are bit for bit identical on standard HDMI cables.

I don't stretch to big budgets, and have bought a fair few highly reviewed products by them - loved all of them (eg. AKG Y50). Maybe they pander to the "buy this £10k piece of wire to hear more from your hi-fi" market, but equally, they review things at different price points, and give a mix of results for things they do and don't advertise.

seems a good deal - any indication anywhere of when you actaully get the speaker?

edit - seen this

My subscription included a gift but I now have my magazine and haven't received my gift, what do I do?
Please allow 35 days for delivery of your gift and first issue. The gift will be sent under separate cover from the magazine. Should we run out of gifts, you may be offered an alternative gift – there is no cash alternative. Themagazineshop has poor reviews and im sure they are NOT going to have hundreds of theses speakers available as it just dosnt make economic sense giving away an £80 speaker for just over £20 plus 6 free mags .... they will send out a cheap alternative even though they claim they will substitute for a similar item and price and honestly how many are going to continue the subs ....5% if lucky and that would be a crippling turnover for Them !

They take the £21.99 first then start the subscription and send your gift - which sounds like it could well be a £20 replacement and that's the worry for me.

No "terms and conditions" to agree to when signing up. Their FAQ says:

"My subscription included a free gift but I've received something different. What do I do?
We occasionally send alternative gifts when we have limited stock that has become “out of stock”. This is only when we are not able to order more from our supplier and we do state this in our terms and conditions when we have limited stock. We try our best to match with similar gifts and of a similar value. Please contact customer services on 0344 543 8035 or email [email protected] if you have any further queries."

The terms and conditions linked to at the bottom of the website says only "26.3 Offers are subject to availability". Personally I wouldn't say this allows them to substitute an alternative gift - if the offer is unavailable then the whole offer and therefore the subscription you signed up for should be invalid. I'll be having strong words with them and my bank if I don't get the deal I was offered. Let's see if the "Direct Debit Guarantee" is worth the pixels it's printed on.

Make sure you take screenshots of bit promising the exact model of speaker ALSO go to eBay and screenshot the SOLD listings to prove its market value.
Then if they try sending you some inferior crap, you have the evidence to sue them in Small Claims for the true value plus court fee. If everyone does this it'll hit em were it hurts and teach em a lesson in selling tactics xD

In t&c says that when you sign for the deal the minimum term of the contract is 12 months and they will still charge you for 12 if you cancel after the 30 day cooling period. Does someone know how much this will equal to?

Here is the text:

Contract Term And Refund Policy

Unless cancelled within the Initial Period, all our subscription contracts are for a minimum 12 month period, including subscriptions which begin with introductory rates. Payment by monthly or quarterly instalments does not infer a monthly or quarterly subscription.

23.2 You may cancel your subscription at any time. We will issue refunds only in accordance with cancellations made during the Initial Period (see previous clause). Unless agreed otherwise by us in writing, if you cancel your subscription outside of the Initial Period you will still owe the subscription fee for the minimum 12 month period.

What typically happens is the product giveaway is treated as advertisement spend.

So in exchange for that, the magazine may offer an advertorial, a cover story, a series of articles, etc. Coverage in the magazine is usually more valuable than a standard ad placement.

At the point of purchase and the preceding pages there was nothing to say it was a 12 month contract irrespective of what their customer service people have said.

just so we are clear - an extract with link, from a .gov page concerning contracts

gov.uk/gui…ide

''“You can hide things in the contractual small print”You must make it easy for customers to read the important terms in a contract and highlight anything that could come as a surprise or may have a significant impact on them. Otherwise the term may be unfair and unenforceable.

It is easy for me to say I will pass on this deal because I have two decent bluetooth speakers already but I really don't like their get-out clause regarding an unspecified alternative gift. That's not on. Of course, they won't state what that alternative is because they know that it's not as good as the headline gift so don't want to put people off taking up their mag subscription.

I emailed them asking if it is a 6 or 12 month contract and they replied with this:

Thank you for your recent email.

All subscriptions paid for by Direct Debit continue automatically until the instruction is cancelled by yourself or your bank.

When you placed your order, you were informed that the first Direct Debit payment would be taken on a specific date and then at a designated period thereafter. Choosing to pay by this method ensures that you don't miss any issues.

Under the Direct Debit Guarantee you can cancel your payments at any time. If the amount to be paid, or the date of the payment changes, you will be notified at least ten working days in advance of your account being debited.

If there is anything else that I can help you with please don’t hesitate to contact me.

15 Aug 17 #128
I found this offer the day it went live at whathifi.com/new…ker

I too have had the cancellation email. In my opinion they had no intention of honouring anyone's subscription or supplying the speakers and have just used it to collect people's personal details in order to send marketing material.

I have challenged them on Twitter and via email to ask how many speakers they had to send out. They dodged the question on Twitter and just replied 'It wasn't a scam but stocks were limited as mentioned in Ts and Cs. It was very popular - sorry!'

The terms did state that if they ran out of speakers they could substitute the gift with something of equal value but it doesn't look like anyone will be getting a speaker.

i am still receiving emails from What Hi Fi advertising the magazine and pestering me to re-subscribe so I have filled a complaint with the ASA detailing my issues with this promotion and the fact they've cancelled yet are continuing to spam me, it won't get you the speaker but I suggest others do the same. Normally I wouldn't bother but I certainly don't agree with setting Direct Debits up on people's bank accounts and collecting personal data without any intention of providing what was advertised.

You can start a complaint at asa.org.uk

That's pretty sneaky. I'm pretty sure I didn't tick any box to say I agreed with the T&C's and I think if they tried to enforce that from section 23 in a non-obvious T&C link on the website, they'd fall foul of the unfair contracts act. It's very clear that they're offering 6 issues for a certain price, there's no indication at all that it's a minimum 12 month period.

Also cancelled. It wouldn't surprise me if they only had one speaker. They did say limited after all.

My first copy of What HiFi turned up today, but no sign of the speaker yet. Anyone else got one?

Ouch

I checked the signup page a week last monday it said cancelled. So i contacted them to enquire if I was still getting thespeaker, I received a reply a few days later
''Dear Subscriber,

Thank you for your recent email.

I am sorry to advise that due to an overwhelming amount of orders to this offer, we are unable to for fil this gift offer.

I can confirm that due to this your subscription has been cancelled with imediate effect. Further communication from the publisher is in the process of being sent to you regarding this matter.

Thank you for your patience and I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you.

If there is anything else that I can help you with please don’t hesitate to contact me.

For and on behalf of What Hi-Fi

Grace Hawes
Email Customer Services''

So I would get in touch with them to see why you have received your magazine.

They do say that gifts take "up to 35 days". I assume they wait until after the 30 day cancellation period before sending them out - which makes sense. We're still within the 30 days so I'm not panicing. The fact that other people's were cancelled suggests I got in in time, so I'm quite hopeful I will actually get one.

Got mine too. Took a bit longer than expected, but when I called them they said they'd had to order a load more.
