No, it is not. I use mine with the S8+. However, you need to be aware that the Gear VR comes with a microUSB connector. Contrary to what you may read elsewhere, it does not come with a Type C connector. You will need to buy that separately. The connectors are inter-changeable (slide-on, slide-off style). You can get the connector from eBay for about £12 so that needs to be factored in for Galaxy 8/8+ users. You also need bluetooth ear/headphones unless you want to be a bore. I would say it is worth it. It is a fantastic piece of kit.

Thanks for the info Condo. Persuaded me to spring for one of these. Would you mind giving the exact name of the connector I would need to allow the S8 to be compatible with the Gear VR? Not entirely sure what I am looking for as I'm sure the size of the adapter must matter.

Just search for Samsung Gear VR2 2016 SM-R323 Type C adaptor / Connector. You can also search by the precise Part No. That is GH98-4035

Just to confirm previous comments. Mine came today after ordering yesterday. Definitely doesn't come with the USB c adapter. Ordered one from eBay for £11.50 free postage.

Seems pretty luck of the draw when it comes to adaptors. My order arrived today and seems like an import as it had Arabic on the back of the box but it came with a USB C adaptor too.

I've had a Gear VR with S6 for a while, then with the S8, Now I have the Oculus Rift, and I have to say that the Gear VR is fantastic, in some ways better than the Rift. below is the reasons why and some answers to some questions some have.
Mine had a swap connector for both USB micro and C, Its in the little white cardboard box.
It's fine with glasses, more room with the width than the Rift.
Yes it's great with the S8 series, runs super smooth and cool. S6 and S7 users report heat issues.
I find it clearer than the Rift, the Pixel resolution is higher, more so with S8.
Tracking is perfect, unlike Rift which only tracks 360 degrees if you have at least 3 sensors, and they cost £59 each.
Gear VR has no silly short cable tethering you too within 2 meters of your PC (the cable is longer but you need to connect to USB 3 and HDMI from your graphics card which is always at the rear of the PC, thus eating up cable length). I'm constantly fighting my cable, and 3 purchases of different extension solutions have so far failed to work.
There's no annoying "halo" effect off high contrast images, the Fresnel lens of the Rift are lighter, but degrade the image to an unacceptable amount for the weight gain in my opinion.
The Software library is actuality very good. There are some titles you wont see, All the good titles are available on Gear VR though, as well as a few fantastic titles Like "Blade Runner 2049" and "Relix Roller Coaster" which are free, awesome, and only available on the Gear VR!
On software, notice its sometimes cheaper, or even free compared to Rift. For example, "Haunted Manor" experience and "Zero Days VR" Film are both free on Gear VR, not so on Rift.
A MUST is the controller. I've seen then on Ebay for about £35, with out it you will not enjoy using the touch pad on the side of the Gear VR for long with out getting arm ache. I also found a nice Bluetooth GamePad for about £10 that works really well, I will link both below.
The Controller and the S8 combined with the good software library makes decent VR available to anyone at a fraction of the cost. It's still a great solution for S6/S7 users albeit a battery killer that gets a little toasty.
TOP TIP ! for S6/S7 users.
There's a USB C connection under the GVR, there's also a USB Micro to C adapter allowing you to plug into a USB power source. I used a portable battery pack in my pocket with a USB to USB C lead into the GVR. Now this will only charge your phone while the headset is not active, or so it says, but it will trickle charge the battery enough when its active so it wont actually drain. I have spent hours at a time using Altspace VR with my phone still on the same 100% after using it.
The heat is more an issue though, first off never use the backplate. My first cooling solution was a small cheap USB powered fan attached to the back of the phone which worked perfectly for cooling, but you could hear the air over the phones microphone which spoiled chatting in AltSpace. This is fine for games and experiences though. My second solution was to try a small USB powered "Peltier" heat pump, otherwise called a solid state refrigerator. This was more expensive, around £30 from china, but cooled perfectly and no fan noise on the mic. Since I had the S8 I haven't had to think about cooling.
Peltier heat pump: Sorry can't find the supplier I used, I would search AliExpress
I only use my Rift at home now, but I often take the Gear VR out to parties or places I stay. Its great fun and portable!

I ment "Affected Manor", not "Haunted manor" which is free on Gear VR and £5.99 (£4.49 this week in a sale) on Rift

Has anyone had trouble getting this to work with a Galaxy S8? Just received mine yesterday and I'm at my wit's end trying to get it to connect. When I plug my phone into the headset, absolutely nothing happens. It's meant to trigger a prompt to download the Oculus software but I don't get that. I've tried all sorts to fix it but nothing has worked, from disabling and re-enabling Facebook, installing the Oculus apk manually. Nothing seems to get the headset to want to interact with my phone. Has anyone else had this issue?
