This basically does exactly what the £25 TP Link one does. Surprised that this has a good little app, easy to set up, and works with Alexa. I've tried with my £25 fire tablet and the fire tv remote, all good. Great for the fan for the summer!
I'll pay £25 for a TP Link one, or any other brand, when it works with Alexa, Siri, and Harmony. Until then, this £15 version is fine.

Already got 6 TP Link plugs when they were £16:49 at Argos so these do exactly the same but £1 cheaper so heat from me.

That was a few months ago right? They were £12.50 at Sainsbury's too but OOS everywhere and online. I think when these drop to £10, and work so HomeKit people will be all over them

Can't see anywhere if it mentions IFTTT capable?

It's always a good idea reading the 1 star comments on amazon. I think I will stay with my TP-Link ones thanks.I won't vote.

Why oh why can't they put the socket the right way up? (Or is it just me that thinks this lack of attention to detail will cause it to catch fire and burn my house down?)

It allows you to turn it on an off easily using the switch on the plug socket. It is this attention to detail that will help to prevent your house from burning down

I have heard some good feedback about the smart switches / plugs and bulbs from these guys itead.cc/

What all 2 of them?! I agree with your general reasoning but you have to have a tolerance and I would say 2/47 bad reviews makes this a pretty safe bet.

There's a promotion on to get £2 off when you buy two of them. I've also selected 'no rush delivery' and got £5 off next prime order.

Hmmm yeah IFTTT would be a good I guess, but can't think what I'd use it for. The timer on these is good too because it's one way, and you can set multiple. I mean, rather than say 'turn on at 10pm, off at 2am' for the fan in my bedroom, I just set 'off at 2am', meaning I can independently choose which nights the fan is on, knowing that it will be off at 2am regardless. My previous electric timer doesn't do this, I need to set an on time.
There's also a timer too, as in on for 2 hours. And the Alexa integration is pretty good, i don't have to say 'tell stupid app name to turn the fan off', it's just 'turn the fan off'.

as I use Alexa and one review says...
Would not connect or install. I tried both modes. Very fiddly. I think the software is the problem. The app gets terrible reviews in Alexa, so I'm surprised the reviews here are so positive.
for me thats a reason.

1 user though. Why do you value that 1 user above the countless others? I could find you a bad review for every product on the planet.
Edit: the bad reviews on Alexa are all around the same date, more recent ones are more favourable so there is a good chance they have fixed an issue?

I already have a TP link but needed more wifi plug sockets. I bought 2 Wasserstein plugs after seeing this post on hotukdeals a few days ago
The Wasserstein ones work well with the iphone app and also work well with alexa.
Very easy to set up using the app
They wasserstein have the advantage of being less bulky and they allow access to the plug switch.
If you are planning to put the socket in a tight space, the wasserstein is slimmer but the lower edge of the unit hangs down (TP link hangs up - this may be a deal breaker for some people)
The big bonus for me is that they have a usb socket on the side, so I can power my alexa dot from it. I use two plugs for my two lounge lamps "alexa lounge on" will now turn on and off the lamps. (alexa lets you create groups so that you can turn on and off multiple sockets at once)
The apps for wasserstein and tplink are both easy to setup and use Both allow you to turn the plug on and off via your smart phone both allow you to set up timers on the plug sockets. The TPlink has an "away mode" so if you are on holiday, you can click this and it will disable the timers. (Wasserstein does not have this feature but personally, I will be using it for lights and will be wanting lights to turn on at night while I am on holiday as a security measure)
Very happy with the wasserstein and would highly recommend.
Have both sockets and the devices that fit into boxes..

Link is to an American site which does not appear to sell UK 3pin versions. Great if you are in the US or Europe, not so hot here.

Well, when I look, it's not an american site, it's HongKong I believe, and they list US, UK, EU, AU plugs, you have to click the correct one. Yes, it's from a China warehouse. And Banggood deals have been posted here many times.

TP link is on offer on Amazon Prime day but you can only buy one socket at the discount price. (£16.19)
or a Sonoff wifi plug from Banggood for a tenner, also works with Alexa.
Save £2.00 when you purchase 2 or more Qualifying items offered by Wasserstein Appliances.
