depends what is important to you - its got extra ram (always nice) and bluetooth - neither of which I need as a HTPC - I find the OP box does everything I need and really well - being on android 7 is a bonus too.

Hi - I had a quick look on youtube and cant find anyone with a problem with this box - there are quite a few experiencing problems with the M8S Pro but that is a different unit with more up spec hardware than this Pro + version

Whose idea was it to buy this turd tv box? Keeps crashing and freezing, factory reset doesn't work, over heats and switches off after a few minutes. Lots of videos on youtube with the same problem. Geekbuying shouldn't be selling it.

Box arrived yesterday, arrived in less than a week. Anyone worked out:

1) how to remove apps from the homescreen? Easy to add but not so for removal. Dodgy english instructions says press Menu but i can't see a Menu option on my airmouse or even on their remote.

2) how do you get their remote to work? Garbled english instructions make no sense.

What's the reliability of these things. Most people I spoke to say theirs lasted no more than 6 months time.

If this is true is it heat related issues? Would it be better to add heatsink/ more vent holes. I took apart my firestick and drilled lots of small holes in the case which has made it run smoother for long hours now.

Can anyone advise me why someone would use something like this rather than a chromecast & Plex in the house? Or is this not really aimed at homes who want local streaming.

I've currently got Rasplex on a Pi and am sick of the Audio being a royal mess everytime it's EAC3 5.1 (known bug they haven't fixed). I want a solution that just works everytime I try and play anything through my plex server (which can transcode server side if need be).

Would this solution, for instance, just be running the same plex app i'd be running on my phone anyway for the chromecast?

To be fair I wouldn't mind being able to just open a browser window and show that on my projector too.

widevine is the drm, it lets you play certain videos from various apps in various resolutions. obv some apps don't have any DRM.

but for say netflix, widevine level 3 is 480p maximum. Widevine level 1 can in theory play upto 4K. at the moment this box is confirmed as 1080p from netflix.

other apps need it as well, netflix is the most common one people use tho.

the one in op, has widevine level 1, whereas 99% of other android boxes have level 3.

because of this it will likely be a big selling box once word gets out, and price will likely increase. Also, people will develop custom ROMs and maintain them for a long time to come (it has nougat, is one of the latest chips, and amlogic has no plans for a new chip this year)

I have this or a similar model from Mecool (posted here) and although the remote looks good, you really need to use the on screen mouse to do a lot of things. This is exceedingly awkward and slow to control using the remote! It's a matter of luck whether the mouse appears or not. Sometimes it just disappears! I've tried to install a few aps, as the built in ones are so cranky. Some just crash on startup. There doesn't seem to be an update to its version of Android. I wouldn't recommend it as a DNLA client. It's awful!

Been looking for something like this. I had 4 options for delivery; standard, sf express, dhl and ems. That's in order of price, oddly dhl being faster was about £5 whereas ems was £11ish. I went with sf express at £2.50 for a 4-8 day delivery...hopefully don't get taxed!

Your review was for the S912 as well, and yes the S912 is generally less supported as far as I can see. I think because of the significantly lower price of S905X on launch, everyone was doing more with them, most people seemed to focus on either Libreelec or slightly modified roms. However with the reduction in price of the S912 and increase in price of S905X (actual retail prices I mean), plus the fact that S912 boxes seem to be more commonly shipping with Android 7.1, it seems the S912 has more of a custom rom support lately on Freaktab at least.
