Before anyone gets too excited, Toshiba don't make their own TVs anymore and are all re-branded turkish Vestel's. Same as all of the other well known brands apart from Samsung, LG and Sony.

Just pick up any unbranded TV and it will be literally identical.

Hisense aren't and neither are Philips. Although Philips TV division is no longer owned by Philips but by a company called TPV whose other main arm is AOC monitors.

Panasonic aren't at the mid-range and above (700+), the lower seem to have Vestel parts. I'm not sure on the exact setup though, but they do seem to have more involvement that just changing the badge as things like the Smart TV system are their own.

Vestel is by far the biggest budget manufacturer out there and has most of the market either directly or through rebadging for the brand owner. Hitatchi, toshiba, finlux, sharp, celcius, JVC, Blaupunkt etc. There one or two others such as Cello/Goodmans TVs which seem to be a chinese ODM (although probably not Hisense judging from the reported quality).

But yeah, the main manufacturers are Vestel, Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Hisense and Philips.

Just one of the many trade-offs in a budget TV. It's a minor difference easily swamped by others under typical TV use. I'd only avoid it if you're using it up close, such as on a desk for a PC.

There's no such thing at this time of year, if you can't get the 2016 range you'll have to wait for the 2017 one to come down in price, pay more or settle for less.

No - but u have to pay 5% surcharge (£19.99). Cheapest option would be to pay £15 for annual online subscription.

Published prices are for members & online subscribers only. A surcharge of 5% (+VAT at the standard rate) will be added to total purchases made by non-Costco UK members and non costco.co.uk online subscribers.

17 Jul 17 #32
Depends what you compare it too.

This would look good compared to a 720p budget TV from 2010. Their target market is this sort of consumer, not those that will compare it against a mid-high range TV because thats an entire different price band (£700+).
EndlessWaves
17 Jul 17 2 #24
Generally the winter. Prices start out at and launch in june and then reduce until late November and December. Models then drop to their lowest price individually from about spring onwards as the stock of that model runs out and the last ones are put on clearance.

Well the N6800 seems to be closer to the M5500 and I haven't seen any sign of the NU8700 yet in the UK which is the next model up.

Something like the Samsung KU65/KU66 models would probably be the closest approximation at a similar price where there's still stock. They are curved though.

This model gets good customer reviews, and for the money you can't really argue for 4K. Although, if you're not desperate to upgrade, I'd recommend saving a few hundred and going for a HDR Premium set. HDR is a much bigger step up in picture quality than 4K is, even if the set is not displaying HDR content
EndlessWaves to Dekard97
17 Jul 17 1 #31
A few hundred? Try closer to a thousand.

Although if you're seeing a difference outside of HDR content then it's because you've bought a higher end TV.

Vestel bought Toshiba's European factory.

Good price for 4k tv, shame no HDR (yeah I know dream on). Ok if it has Vestel panel on, but how about rest of electronics? Has anybody actually dismantled it to see what's inside and compared to all them brands Vestel rebadges for? Toshiba is well known electronics manufacturer and quality of product is always reasonable and reliable so I wonder if they just use Vestel panel and put their own electronics on it? To manufacture your own panel would cost a fortune and competition in the market is too high with low profits, I can understand why Toshiba uses vestel panels.
Dekard97
18 Jul 17 #35
Admittedly I bought the Samsung UE55KS9000, which is a clear jump up in picture quality over standard 4K TV's - irrespective of HDR content. I would have thought you could buy a lower spec 10bit HDR spec TV for around £600 on a sale that would offer a far superior picture than a standard 8bit 4K panel. Personally I'd wait for black Friday if there's nothing out there at a reasonable price.

Same here. I've had my current one for 5 years and it's still running just fine. I wouldn't mind a 4k one but I won't buy one until my current TV breaks, simply because reselling an old TV is a massive pain and none of my family members who live anywhere near close to me need one atm.

Yes the usual prats who think "Time machine" is a witty comment. It may have been reasonably witty the first time several
decades ago, but not when its done on a daily regular posting on virtually every offer.
And then they get snappy and huffy when they get the P taken out of them for it !

I bought a Phillips pus6401 in 49" model for £409 at Argos a few days ago. Picture quality is great, with 4k, hdr plus(8 bit panel) also with ambilight which makes the TV feel more like 55" and is truly great. Yes it's not the same quality as oled and quantum dot etc but I think you'd be hard pushed to find a better TV under £600.

Hi,

Has anybody had any issues with sound/picture sync when viewing any HD freeview channel, or youtube app? SD freeview channels/external sources like PS4 etc no issues at all, but I have noticed the sound can be out of sync with HD Freeview and Youtube.

This is on the 49" version.

I saw a 'Toshiba' 4K 50 inch next to a Samsung top of the range 50-incher yesterday at Currys (always go to them for a browse, of course never buy!). The Toshiba was around 450 squids and the Sammy, 950. I had a really good look at the PQ on both, and the Sammy was definitely better. But was it twice as good>? I'd say no. In fact I'd have been perfectly happy with the 'Toshiba' quality had I not seen the Sammy next to it. 4K pictures were punchy, with good colour definition and contrast, and there was very little light bleed. Blacks were good.
The only think putting me off buying a big-screen OEM/ budget TV is the usually standard 1y warranty. This Costco offering turns that on its head. Their extended warranties are sterling, usually replace like for like.

I'd definitely buy this.
Heated.

NB: Same price at Tesco but no 5y guarantee.

I bought the 43 inch version of this TV last week from Costco for 299
Its really good, but a bit too good for my liking, I like films to look like films - it makes them look too real :/
But I suppose that's the whole idea, it's excellent value for money though, whoever it really is made by, plus the Costco 5 year guarantee, can't go wrong.

I have a 9 year old Panny FHD plasma which just goes on and on. And to think I was wary getting it (for an amazing price) from Comet (remember them??) due to them only giving the standard 12 months manufacturers warranty lol. To be fair still a lovely picture and the footie looks great, unlike some 4k TVs I've seen. Now we have an Echo, hankering after Philips Hue and Philips Ambilight TV but won't happen until the Panny gives up the ghost...

I was going to spend about a grand on a 65 inch Samsung but now I am just going to wait for Costco or similar store offering a 5 year guarantee to do one for around 600, not bothered about the 10 bit hdr stuff now as there is always going to be something new on tv's.
