OH has Timberland boots like that,he wears them for work but they are a nightmare as they get so dirty.When I'm feeling brave I clean them with cream cleaner XD

When did boots get these rubbish white plastic things instead of soles?
I don't mean these in particular, I mean every other pair of shoes /boots I've seen on here lately have plastic that's not fit for a carrier-bag as the sole.
