The extended LOTR trilogy can be found for a similar price. On the plus side, you get what are generally thought of as the definitive versions of those movies along with vast swaths of behind the scenes materials. On the other plus side, you don't get The Hobbit movies.

There's actually a fan-made version called the Tolkien Edit that's intended to be watched as a single four-hour film. As a LOTR devotee who really dislikes the Hobbit series, it feels like a much better watch with a ton of sub-plot gutted from it.

Loved the extended lotr. The Hobbit was a bit of a slog, 2 films could have covered it. Can see why Jackson wanted to do lotr first though.

Well, they'll contain all of the footage from the regular ("theatrical") versions, but there's not an option to play the films without the additional content.

Loved both sets of films paid 25 for this a month ago watched extended of both and are brilliant they do go over 4 hours each tho on lotr hobbit not so long extended are on 2 discs per film tho

This may or may not be a stupid question... If you buy the extended versions of LOTR, do they normally include the regular versions as well? Or would you have to buy the regular versions separately?

Poundland £1 extended editions on blu ray was the deal to find - I only ever found the first one! But even so... what a well spent quid!

Is the LOTR BluRay Extended Edition trilogy still available? (the edition with all the special features and stuff)

As much as I enjoy the extended editions, they do bloat the story and drag the tempo of the films. I think it caters more to people who has already seen the original versions and just want more backstory. I think the hobbit films should have been 2 films, but they added so much extra content they just made a third film out of it and the tempo is just awful, even though the individual shots are great. Cut out extra fight scenes, the bloated five army scene, pointless romance and the extended "running away from things" scenes and you get a tighter focused narrative (looking at the fan edits.
