Rk3229 not the ideal SoC choice and no doubt the PSU will incur wrath of European Commission Rapid Alert System but price seems OK for what it is.

Took the words out of my mouth.
The SoC is one to avoid but the advantage is you get 2GB RAM and the price isn't so bad. Personally for me, the negative out weighs the positives, so I'd have to give it a miss.
I'd rather spend this on an AmLogic box.

Can you enlighten us please? As I have no idea why I should avoid this? Serious question, not trolling
Why? They are better value than anything Sky/BT/Virgin can offer..

Which is the reason why these gems get a bad press. The use for these are far from dead and far from ever being dead. They make a great Kodi box and Kodi isn't just a platform for piracy you know, it's a whole media centre and a brilliant one at that. It rustles me up Kodi has become a household name for an all-in-one piracy platform.

Smash repo is probably being run by the us satellite company sueing some of the kodi addon writers, same as the sky code breaking ring was back in the day. They'll be collecting data for legal notices, no doubt.

I agree with the above positive comments about Kodi. It's got a 'bad' name purely because of what people have been using it for. Personally I use my android box purely as a media centre as it uses way less power than the PC it replaced, and it's much smaller and quieter. These boxes are worth it for that alone I think?

Is anyone else having issues with the movie scrapping as if you choose the movie database as the scrapper its not getting any movie info and i have multiple Kodi boxes all with the same issue, ive swapped the scrapper to another and its pulled all the covers but nether TV or movie is updating the recently added. I bet its down to the Kodi piracy thing thats going on.

If your using something like SPMC instead of Kodi that is the problem

I've got the mxq (bit similar, lesser spec). Fantastic support for getting LibreElec on it. Obviously I don't do the dodgy stuff, but it's ideal for streaming content from my zgemma box.

Hello everyone
I'm new to this android box.
Can anyone explain to me what channels I can watch apart from free view?

I have one of these. At half the price of a firestick, I'm happy enough.
Came with Kodi, added mobdro.
Wireless range probably not as good as the firestick, but it does have a LAN connection.

How well do these types of boxes handle something like Netflix and is amazon possible?
Ive heard the former may be limited and the latter a pita.
Chances are the stick will be on sale for prime day, so may be worth waiting if its a choice between this and the stick.

exactly, Kodi is by far the best way to use, for example - ITVplayer. as the actual ITV player app is shocking, but as a plug in to Kodi, it's actually useable.

Isn't this one a better chip (Amlogic S905X) and cheaper?
I haven't purchased an Android box yet and I've only recently started reading about them, hence I'm following this thread
Sorry, in the description your box was saying S905 but then in the specs says S905X , so it's better with 3gb RAM (but obviously a bit more money... probably worth the extra £15/16

It's not a bad spec but I would avoid RockChip at present. There are numerous issues with audio pass through etc with this SoC. A lot of support for it has been dropped by the usual android media players.

I'd also avoid Rockchip-based boxes. I've had two and both had playback and audio issues with Kodi & Plex. I would never buy another. I now use Plex (Media Server & app) to cast to a Chromecast (early one). Covers all my needs and it's much more stable/glitch-free than either androidTV box I've owned.

This is a great price, but if I was buying one of these types of box, I'd be getting the H96 Pro. More expensive but far more bang for your buck.
I use mine with OpenVPN and Netflix. Pick a region, any region.:stuck_out_tongue:

I have xbmc/kodi since the days I had it on an original xbox (also used mediaportal for a while), & is used with your own media ripped or downloaded to a local server it's ultra reliable & knocks the spots off netflix/amazon prime etc.
Use of end to encrypted usenet or vpn protected torrents isnt difficult.
If you're using streams you're constantly going to be chasing addons around as they are forced to close & reopen etc, not to mention that the quality is very poor compared to a properly ripped film.
These android boxes are great value for what they offer, although I'd choose an amlogic box or, even better, a fire tv box myself over this model.
Bought this a few months back, the 912 chipset is fantastic, some of the cheap ones are slow and problematic, not for me.

Am I missing something? This isn't free is it, so why is it in the "Freebies" section? Gave me hope for a minute but banggood did not have a track record of giving away things for free or so I hear...

You can certainly install both apps but you'll only get SD streams. Devices have to be certified by Netflix to receive HD streams and that list is limited.

It's worth a punt if you just want to dip your toe in, this is the price you would normally pay for a chinese 1GB ram/8GB storage. Bear in mind the rockchips are not quite as robust for video playback as Amlogic, though they hit their advertised 2Ghz, while the amlogic 9xx series are internally capped at 1.5Ghz or so, even if they say otherwise (Amlogic are great for video playback, regardless of processor speed).
Setting up program guides/channels on Kodi is not for the faint hearted, and netflix will be capped at SD resolutions.
Support is something you won't get from chinese box suppliers. If there is a problem, you'll be stuck with it -unless you are willing to hunt around for a compatible rom on freaktab.com yourself. Droidbox, minix, go streamer are just a few UK based companies with decent warranties, regular software updates, and support forums/helplines.
for this price, i'd risk it though!
I use my droidbox for retro emulation and gaming, it's pretty good all the way up to PSP and dreamcast, and will fit an internal harddisk as well. However, with only an openGL 2.0 graphics chip - it won't play the latest Android games, and touch screen games can be problematic. All emulators use my PS3 pad, which is fun.
