got one, its ok for backups but please be warned this is a backup disk.
it's not fast . not at all. it's not for storing stuff on that you will use daily, it's really only for backups. it's a shingled disk. but for this price.... super hot. I might even get another.

What is the exact hard drive model inside?

ST8000AS0002 :man:
I'd be careful what you use it for:
Q: Would I want 8TB of probably irreplaceable data on just one (non-RAID) drive?
A: Nope.
Q: Would it be great as a media drive?
A: Yup!

It's this
ST8000AS0002

I believe it's ST8000AS0002. 128MB Cache, 190MB/s max sustained data rate. Has a workload limit of 180TB per year.

How easy it is to open up the enclosure?

How is this deal not hotter than the sun?

yeah it wont do 190MB/s seriously, go check the reviews on the standalone disk.
I assume you saw the image on amazon where someone says they got 190MB/sec but if you actually read the entire review he says this
"starts off fast (I got approx. 190mb/s) but gradually slows down (at its slowest I got 40mb/s). " this is my experience too. It gives you a nice fast number for a sec or two (probably disk write cache) then it slows down to about 50MB/sec for me.

Op. You also get amazon pantry credit of £2.99 when you buy it.
I'm drunk, so I bit the bullet and ordered a second one for myself, but even if I wasn't **** id probably buy another...

I want to order one of these, but I don't want to use that enclosure, I want to mount the drive in an existing case. Is there anything to prevent me doing that ? I mean will I find the drive soldered to a sub-assembly or something equally daft when I crack open the enclosure?

Nah man it's just a disk inside a case, crack it open and whip out the disk. of course you will probably void the warranty in doing it but nothing to stop you. much cheaper than buying the internal version of the exact same disk.
Use TeraCopy. It gave me full transfer rates on the exact same model bare drive when I had one. That let me transfer over 1TB of content at full write speed in one sitting. When I used the bog standard windows copy shell it would drop the speeds down to the mentioned 40MB/so mark.
I don't know how TeraCopy gets around the limitation but it does. Magic I guess
I may pick one of these drives up for surplus Plex media. I wonder if the enclosure is easy to get into as a lot of complaints seem to stem from the enclosure.

Not expecting 190mbps but 40mbps is very slow. Was hoping more like 100... anyone have experience?

See my comment above (#14).
40MB/s is the write speed using Windows file transfer once the buffer (around 20GB iirc) is full.
These drives are good for write once, read many scenarios (cold storage).

When I open the OP link I can see on the right hand side it states "Deal of the Day" but when I navigate to Amazon primeday homepage and look at "Prime day deals" I can't seem to find this.
This is the first time I participate in a prime day and I don't understand are all the offers on the homepage under "Prime day deals" or they are everywhere on the website and I have to look for them myself?

The website is a bit of a mess. I have found this year's one to be the worst in terms of Web layout and being able to find the things you're interested in. They seem to just be throwing everything at you in one go. You can't even consistently view your watch list on the website.
Anyway rant over.
If you click the Prime banner at the top of the page it will take you to all the various Prime deals.
You can then apply filters to the page to filter out the Lightning deals and/or categories, upcoming deals etc.
I'd have a brief look through the Prime deals page, add anything of interest to watch and then just the Amazon app.
Also check back here regularly as some people on here somehow find deals such as this one that like you I didn't even spot.

So you reckon this would be no good for games? Either PC or XBOX One
daskapital

Actually it's not too bad for that purpose. I mean it's not super fast or anything, but it's most certainly quicker than the bluray drive in your xbox. It's probably not going to be as fast as a regular USB hard disk but it will be just fine for loading games. I seriously doubt you would notice the difference in loading times. But just FYI i have never tried one on an xbox, some people say it doesn't work on PS4 so hell knows if it works on the xbox or not ..
On the PC? I wouldn't really recommend it for games no.
. but it's amazon so nothing stops you returning it for free  (just make sure to choose the reason as "performance/quality not acceptable" then you don't pay to return) best of luck.

Definitely works on Xbox One. There's specifically a problem with the PS4 - any drive with a built-in USB hub just won't work with it, doesn't matter what capacity.

Thanks, will try it with Xbox One. I guess I need another hard drive for PC
