Without a shadow of a doubt the most lethal hand held machine you are likely to ever use.

Without wanting to sound patronising only buy this if you know what you are doing and don't dislike your neighbour

Many ways of cutting stuff just get a bow saw much safer or a hand held replicating saw. Can't really think of a use unless you own a forest.
compadre to fishleg003
6 Jul 17 4 #11
Try cutting 2 cubic metres of oak or chestnut for firewood with a bow saw. For most things except forestry etc an electric chainsaw is a lot quieter, and convenient.
royals to fishleg003
7 Jul 17 #42
agree, decent saw and a manual tree pruner (like than the excellent fiskars one) should be enough for most - otherwise get a pro in. in the wrong hands these things are lethal. This cheap rubbish is even more lethal as you more likely get kick back than a decent brand like stihl. i have a stihl hedgetrimmer and brushcutter and they are lethal enough

Dangerous pieces of kit. I think most people would be better just to get some quotes from local gardeners to trim their hedges. I paid £30 recently, money well spent to keep my limbs safe and saved me the hassle of doing the job.
edgeone to MarkShopper

Chainsaw are not for trimming hedges. They are only dangerous if used incorrectly or if you don't know what you are doing with one.

This is a hedge trimmer, much harder to injure yourself if you use the correct tool.
Glad to see that all the moaners are back commenting on how bad this is without having bothered to buy or try this one.

7 Jul 17 #32
This is quite a wimpy chainsaw, not really useful for much more than a quick way to cut firewood or to maintain branches a bit thicker than a good hedge trimmer would deal with but it is quicker and more flexibly than a handsaw.

Do remember that these things are not maintenance free, they need servicing, the chain needs to be kept sharp and the oil bath needs looking after. But better than an electric one, there is nothing convenient about trailing a 240v cable around.

Still a hot deal compared to equivalent product prices.

7 Jul 17 #33
I'm sure people on here are old enough to be responsible for there own safety As far as the deal goes the reviews are hit and miss, I appreciate that it comes with a 2 year guarantee but the same as my useless dremmel, when I go to use I need it to work not look to,see if it's past it's 2 year old mark cause it's knackered and take it back.
For this kind of kit, I'd invest in quality and stuff the price, just my opinion I'm sure it isn't shared by all.

please please please be careful when using any chainsaw. the kickback is lighting fast and you'll be very lucky if you get away without any injury. I almost took out my face with one when i hit a small rock trying to cut out the roots of a big tree. Thank god i was wearing a helmet and face guard. do not lose concentration, even for a moment.
ultrak3wl to shaft1
7 Jul 17 #54
Helmet and face guard but also recommend steel mesh safety trousers. Well actually that's not my recommendation it comes from paramedic friend which unfortunately has seen it all before.
g1hsg to shaft1
7 Jul 17 #67
With respect you shouldn't EVER be putting the bar anywhere where you can't see what it's going through. Also running into soil is the fastest way to blunt the cutting edges. Granted this isn't the most powerful saw out there but it is far more than a hedge trimmer - if used correctly.
JonF992 to shaft1
7 Jul 17 #69
This just says it all. If you're going to use a chain saw to cut out roots, then you're going to risk serious injury. Used with common sense for their intended purpose and you're not going to come to harm.

Mine broke - Oil line split over the winter somehow and is beyond repair without taking to a shop.

Wouldn't go for a petrol one again though, I have around a dozen 15ft conifers that need annual trimming among other taller trees and would 100% go electric next time. Far less hassle.

My dad did his finger with a hedge trimmer so they can be dangerous too. Mum rang and said she had a call Dad was in hospital- could I go up to the house as she was out- had no idea why he was in hospital. Went up and there were the stepladders on the floor, hedge trimmers next to them, and a trail of blood to where his car would have been parked. When we got to the hospital found he had lopped his finger straight off, but he's a hard as nails character and he'd picked it up and driven himself to hospital. They couldn't re-attach it and he was asking the nurses if he could have it mounted in a glass case giving 'the finger'. Moral of this story- be bloody careful, it would have been his entire hand with one of these!

Wtf has everyone on Hukd turned into some kind of would-be health and safety officer.

It's a chain saw they can't be sold to under 18s. If you are susceptible to losing limbs using one then you deserve it and would have come to a sticky end at some point regardless.
thabiz to robo989
7 Jul 17 1 #60
Yes it is annoying to go on about safety, but in this case it really is necesary. They really are extremely dangerous. You cannot just get one out the box, no familiarity with how it will behave and control, with no ppe and start cutting. Though I suspect a fair amount of people do that, it is completely wreckless. And in the end, if enough people do seriously hurt themselves or others then chainsaws will be harder to get hold of, just like proper nail guns, air guns, bows, large bushcraft knives etc etc. And then the consumer looses again. There are youtube instructional videos, cheap ppe and common sense, so no excuse to not do it properly at a low level of risk.
Accidents with power tools tend to happen with ignorance and misguided machismo. And I have seen that level of stupidity with professional tree surgeons also.
hullu
7 Jul 17 #59
just apply common sense, ensure the cut you make is opening and not closing thus pinching the chain. It's easy to anticipate kick backs on that basis. I've been using chainsaws for 40 years, had few chains come off etc but anticipation is the key.
