I'm a novice but I chose raid1 to mirror with static volume so folder size wasn't restricted but you can always reset and start over. Download various qnap apps from Google store, I noticed how easy it was to upload files from my android phone. simply share to qnap file app and it drops it in designated folder. I wasn't happy with HDMI playback of Plex (stutter) on TV so I opted to select film on the qvideo mobile app and as long as dlna is turned on select streaming options from the app then select your network attached TV etc and play back is perfect with dlna (better than Chromecast) then use your TV remote to pause, play etc. Lots to learn though but it will fall into place

I wouldn't go that route, I have the 216j but got this one, it's a much more capable Nas. I'm selling mine because the qnap for all my needs. Only minor is the software Synology has advantage there.

Order cancelled here too, tempted to go for the Synology 216J at £363 (amazon)

The one i ordered from Amazon Warehouse arrived on Saturday.
Not sure why they stated damage to the packaging, the packaging seems fine!
Will look at getting this setup today. Anyone have any advice/tips?

I was really after the 4 bay version, so if someone is interested in making me a serious offer for the 2 bay version (without the hard drives). I may consider it.
It's not even been powered up yet.

No idea, the NAS cosmetically had no damage at all. It was just the the retail box it came in.
Amazon have never done anything like that before.

I got mine, was also able to get another £10 off with student discount code that was going round.
I wasn't greedy and only ordered the one.
Packaging was poor though, they just stuck a label to the retail box, it should have been packed inside a second box as there isn't much protection.
Luckily it 'looks' okay, apart from a tattered box. Will do a bad sector scan over the weekend.
Thanks again op.
For those wondering, I ordered on the 15th shortly after the OP posted the deal.

CS just responded back as usual using the T&C as a cover up for this fiasco and stated that they could not comment on other customers' orders of the same item. I immediately cancelled both my Prime and Amazon Drive memberships and will vote with my wallet on this occasion,

Yes, It would be great if people who'd received this can provide us with evidence to use against Amazon as I am not intending on letting this one go if they'd really sent the item to some but not to others.

Yeah, mine's just been cancelled too. Gutted. Don't know how they can claim that it was a misprice when other people have received their orders. If they ran out of stock, then surely they should just say that it's "unavailable" at that price. Anyway, I'm really disappointed as I can't afford it at full price.

Ended up upgrading the NAS with 8GB, couldn't find my 2x 8GB SODIMMS, quite easy to do, as a previous OP said, three screws and you just slide the enclosure out. Mine came with 2 x 2GB SODIMMs 1600MHz DDR3L from transcend.

Mine was delivered today. Rediculous paid £335 for Synology 216J about 2 months with 2x3TB HDD at the time, has sat in the corner because it is so under powered for most stuff I use. This on the other hand is not bad, been able to find all the apps I used on QNAP forums.
Off to sell my Synology now.

RAID 1 is a mirror, that should equal 2.8TB ish as a storage pool. Check your snapshot reservation settings to see if this is using a large chunk of this.

22 Jul 17#38
I set mine up to raid 1 and proceeded to copy over 1.02tb of files then message popped up that I hadn't enough space, 5gb short! So my guess is I'll have to reset to default, set it to raid 0 (if it will allow) and I'll back up to large usb drive occasionally? If anyone can advise me different I'll be much appreciated.

Picked up 2nd 4GB stick off ebay for mine for £15.95 BIN, push from 4GB to 8GB far cheaper than the amazon price. Mine had 1x4GB installed and second slot blank so worth checking that prior to ordering.

Either task scheduler or you can iLO on to it.
Unlike the NAS, you can remotely connect and view the micro server just like you were sitting in front of it. - You will have full control over the whole server whether powered on or off using the iLO console.
CaptainSocks
19 Jul 17#13
Yep.
Spot on.
For me it was always basic maths.
Obviously a microserver can do more. But then you're paying for said power.
For me, it was roughly
Microserver = about £55 a year.
NAS = about £10 a year.
I don't need a lot of transcoding so the NAS makes more sense.
But if someone runs a lot of Apple devices I can see why a Microserver and more effective transcoding makes more sense.

I have a couple of computers that will allow in the bios to timer on and off.the machine, does the micro server allow this then?. Not sure how the software on the micro server will allow it to power on when the unit is turned off, I might be wrong

There's nothing stopping you setting a timer on a microserver to do exactly the same...

I dont Disagree, if all you want is a file store with some potential features that might be useful to you then these devices are perfect. But if you want the added feature a microserver brings then its superior in every way. it can grow to do so much more. Different strokes for different folk's
Bendown
18 Jul 17#4
You are correct, people need to realise the added cost, sure a micro server is cheaper initially and needs work to set it it up. The downside is 40 watts x 24 hours x 365, where as this nas can be put on a timer so in theory will shut down during the night for further savings.

Plex now supports quicksync hardware transcoding for h264 so it's better than it was. Still not as good as a g4400 in a Gen9 though.
CaptainSocks
17 Jul 17#2
Sounds good.
What does the Gen 9 idle at?
I tend to stick with NAS because of the less than 1W power draw when idle.
But if Miceoservers have got close to that now I'd be tempted.
The last Microserver I had idled at around 40W! :disappointed:
Sagacity
17 Jul 17#1
As already mentioned depends on use case. I personally run plex and the CPU in these QNAP NAS's are okay but not good enough for decent transcoding hence why i personally went down the HP Gen9 Micro server route which 4x2TB Drives.
Plus i then have the added bonus of being able to use the device for other use's for example Virtual Test labs etc. And the MicroServers are pretty power efficient anyway.
