We all know how power hungry DAB radios are, and my DAB+ radios dont seem any better in efficiency than the plain DAB radios i've had. They still use up batteries, or rechargeables at a high rate.
The manufacturers have made small improvements in what power they use, by using different displays etc, but it isnt much.
I simply dont believe that a DAB+ receiver in a radio will make any notable difference from a plain DAB receiver in how much power that radio uses.... If it did, the manufacturers would be making a big deal of DAB+ receivers being more efficient in battery use than ordinary DAB.

With modern consumer electronics newer versions are often more power efficient when they start using newer components that are more power efficient.
So it may be that more recent DAB radios are benefiting from this more than anything.
At first glance it seems unlikely that the new CODEC itself will make the difference but that the newer chips that support it are inherently more efficient regardless of CODEC.
In fact newer CODECs tend to consume more power as they tend to be more computationally demanding which is how they manage to offer better compression rates.
But once a chip is designed purely to handle a new CODEC the efficiency improves.
You see this with CPUs on PCs when they add dedicated on-chip circuits for new CODECs rather than using the CPU's main cores that power consumption drops dramatically.

So let me get this absolutely straight, are you seriously proposing that potential purchasers of this bargain-basement £39.00 Philips Portable Vintage FM and DAB+ Radio should subsequently go out and blow a further £299.00 on a shiny new pair of Thunder connector headphones for the questionable privilege of listening to the airwaves via this new socket ?
Assuming that I've not totally lost my marbles, a rudimentary grasp of mathematics would tend to suggest that the cost of such headphones would exceed the value of the radio by a ratio of 5 to 1 ? Such expenditure simply wouldn't prove justifiable from my particular standpoint, but as you clearly seem to have more than enough money to burn, then I wish you the very best of luck with your purchase !

Are those dimensions correct ? Nearly 15cm deep ? The photo appears to look much shallower. 21x15x15cm is more like a speaker box dimension.

The retro headphone socket has been replaced with an ultra miniature "Thunder" connector for your listening convenience.
Headphones using the new Thunder connector are available from Philips for a very reasonable £299 per pair.

Its 20 presets, 10 for DAB and 10 for FM.
The 3 presets on the front just saves having to go into the menu.

Not heard that before !.... i'm sure i would have heard about it if it were true.
DAB+ just enables the radio to pick up + stations. Of which there's only 3 currently here in the UK.

Are you still listening to low bit rate DAB radio? many stations run at 64kbps, but then you probably couldn't tell the difference.

Personally, i'm a fan of DAB. The lowering of bitrates is annoying but i'm happy with more choice of stations. DAB might not be perfect, but i'd rather have it than just analogue radio.

I hate seeing DAB radios, as soon as enough people have bought one the Government are going to pull the plug on FM, and all my nice FM radios will be landfill
For what? I don't want any more stations and I especially don't want to listen to local radio.
It's a solution that nobody wanted.

I stopped using DAB & moved over to Podcasting because of the Govt adverts most stations now are playing esp TalkRadio. Its started to feel like I was being Brainwashed. Sad really.

Have this in the bathroom - it sounds great. Actually picked mine up some time ago from Tesco's outlet on eBay - they accepted my offer of £30 - I think it was a return, but arrived looking like new.
