No they are not. That is simply miles from the truth. These are not made in switzerland, the parts are all completely different and so is the movement and the features it has.

The country of origin is different (china not swiss), and the labour force is, and the parts used, and the quality control is as well they are miles apart. If that is economics 101, then maybe you should take economics 102 as well

Example , https://www.firstclasswatches.co.uk/blog/2015/05/why-are-titanium-watches-so-popular/
When one has money comfortably to play with these watches, scratches are not an issue; on the other hand those who wear , not play, them only on "Sunday going to church or temple" do mind the scratches on thousands of pounds plus watches

It often appears that is has, but it's usually "just" the grey oxidised layer that forms after you start wearing it/on contact with air, revealing the shiny metal underneath.

charliemike
9 Jul 17 1 #15
"Replica" watches are made in the same factory as these, they just don't meet the ridiculous quality control that Rolex imposes. The "replicas" are then sold to companies in China for pennies who then sell them to the Turks for a pound then you buy them for, say, £20. Everyone gets a slice of cake, everyone is happy including Rolex who then claim they are "fake". And that's economics 101 for you.

Hahaha, the lucky lucky man totally sucked you in didn't he?:smile:

There are 'grade A' replica watches that look pretty close to the originals, but none of them are made in the same factories, ever.

Rolex have been making watches for over 100 years. Whilst their quality control will be of a high standard are you saying for every watch that does meet their exacting standard there are 1000's that don't!

Rolex watchmaker with 30 years experience.

That's exactly what the guy in Bulgaria told me three years ago when I bought an Omega Seamaster off him for 60 quid. And he even had his mate Zoltan (who worked at the Omega factory) stood next to him to vouch for him.
It's hard to believe there are still some people around who are daft enough to invest in the genuine watches when they could get a fortnights all abusive holiday AND the (almost same) watch for the same price.

Hmmmm £4k on a watch that tells the time and....erm...looks ok...or a family holiday. That's a tough one for sure. I often wonder about these posts because let's face it, if we could just throw £3,800 at a watch then we wouldn't be on here looking for deals. Then again, people who have a lot of money are usually the stingiest in society, in my experience.

Some replica watches are stunning. There's huge difference between proper, reverse engineered replicas and cheap tat you buy in Turkey with a logo printed on it.

a good investment if you have the spare cash tbh, unlike iphones and other gadgets these will be worth more in 20 years.
colin10086 to robdoubler
9 Jul 17 1 #27
I wouldn't go as far as saying they are an investment, they just won't loose you as much money as a tech. gadget. Even if the resale price rises keeps up with inflation it isn't making you money, and you make a loss if you take the manufacture's advise and get it serviced every few year at around 10% of the cost of the watch.
solsurf to robdoubler
13 Jul 17 #72
You're right, I toyed with buying an omega seamaster in 2003 for £845 Heathrow where I worked, similar watches sell for 1100 to 1500 at auction with box. I know it just keeps place with inflation but you get to wear a great watch and could always get your or most of your money back.

9 Jul 17 #26
The problem with buying watches like this as an investment is that they are so expensive so service you can't really have a selection of branded watches. For people that have the real deal it seems desirable to have some replicas for when you feel like a change as it's hard to wear Seikos and the like after getting used to an Omega or Rolex.
Some replicas are pretty much indistinguishable from when I've gathered - just can't be obtained through paypal which sucks.

Not really when you consider it is a movie player, music player, compass, camera, video camera, torch, satnav, live sky tv player, mini laptop etc etc etc.Hell I can even make phone calls from it.A bargain really and a much more accurate time than the Omega which can only tell the time
LionelRichieFan
10 Jul 17 4 #39
But how long does a phone last, on average, 2 years, if you push it 3. and then it will be worth less than a tenth of it's original price most likely.

Although the right phone is a bargain, I agree there.

A watch will last decades, and could be passed on from you to your kids, and then to your grandkids and so on. Yeah they tell you that you need to service it every 3-5 years, but most of these decent watches will easily last 15 years without a service, then get it serviced and it is good as gold again.

It is also an item of jewellery, and an item of clothing, a suit will cost anywhere from 100-10,000 and will last a few years of regular use before it should be replaced (obviously more if it is only for special occasions) same with other items of clothing, but a watch you can wear every day.

On Top of being a fashion item, jewellery item, heirloom/investment, and obviously a time piece, it is also a beautiful piece of engineering, and could be considered a hobby, just like racing, or shooting, or train sets.

Sure, you can tell the time with your phone, or just get an £8 casio watch and do fine, but a mechanical watch is so much more than a way to tell the time. My main watch is a seiko skx009 (~£150). I have got much more than 150 quids worth of pleasure out of it after only a couple of months, and it isn't going to stop any time soon. I can imagine a more expensive, more complicated watch would give a lot more enjoyment. Just like anything, you could say "why get an expensive car?", "why buy expensive wine?" etc, because you get more enjoyment out of it.

Oh, and a side note, my watch is more accurate than my phone's clock, assuming I turn off synchronisation with the phone and the internet, which I think is fair considering you aren't synchronising the watch with the internet either

I just can't do it. I want to give heat for the discount off the rrp but just under £4k for a watch? A watch. Yes, I'm sure it's made to the highest standards and will last years but it's just a watch. I could buy a better looking watch than this every year for the next 30 years and still have money left over from what this one costs. It would still make me feel good, keep good time for a year and probably have less damage to it after a year than this one. Plus never need servicing. Sorry, but just under £4k for something that just tells the time is madness.

There is a new model of the Aqua Terra about to be released with a new 8800/8900 caliber movement inside, so no way would I spend 4k on this, especially as the design is not the most elegant of the Aqua Terra models.

It's ok, not everyone has a high disposable income to indulge hobbies like this. For those that do and appreciate horology, watches are a satisfying long-term investment.
peter1969uk
10 Jul 17 1 #45
I wouldn't buy one in the UK at the moment. Not until Brexit has been sorted out, and our markets regain some strength. I have a few expensive watches but I'll hold off until the prices improve. For example pre-brexit this watch was about £2500.00 then over night shot up to £4000.

So keep your money in an interest earning account, then buy a watch once the £ regains its position in the market.

Oh come on guys. This site is about savings. This is a saving. I'm a massive watch enthusiast and I choose to buy watches. Of course 4K is a lot of money but if you can afford it and enjoy owning watches, then this will be of interest to someone.

Some would people prefer to spend 4K on a holiday, others would rather spend 4K on a watch. Everyone is different. Different hobbies, opinions and views.

To all those saying "Bloomin eck I would never pay 4k on a watch and if you do so then you must be an insecure show-off", the average low-paid people in the UK spend thousands on booze and fags with nothing to show for it, and usually without even blinking. The UK is going down the toilet in terms of class and refinement, and it's a shame that the skinflints on this forum are unable to understand that a great deal on a 5k watch is no different to a great deal on a £50 PS4 game.

It's all a matter of perspective.

With the greatest repect, even in your experience, I would think it's unlikely that wealthier people would go around telling you, or anyone, the good they do with their money.

Also, every person that is good with money will want to find the best price or get the greatest value for something regardless of how much money they already have. Infact, though there are some great deals to be had on this site - I would suggest that this website actually causes people to spend more money on things they don't actually need. Which might be why a good deal on SSD's or a cheap PS4 gets much much more heat than a mortgage deal for instance.
jambone
14 Jul 17 #74
Some people want a 2 week all in rest/holiday for £4K, others might want a watch they can wear most days for 20/30 years and pass down to their kids.

Neither is wrong if it makes you happy and you feel it's good value. Equally, someone might want a watch one year and a holiday the next. Depends at what stage in your life you are at - not age related.

EDIT: I couldn't tell if, but hope, you were being facetious about the Bulgarian guy and his mate
jambone
14 Jul 17 #75
You can get cheaper phones that do all of that, and you can get cheaper watches that tell the time too, so I believe his comment is valid
