Why would anyone trap themselves in the Apple ecosystem by buying an Apple watch? Every other smart watch works on both Android and iOS cold for the anti competitive practices at whatever the price.

At a guess I'd say the offer prices will be online tomorrow (Prime day is tomorrow) but could go live anytime before midnight.
Just a guess.

Any bloody excuse for Currys to have another "sale"!
Give it a few more years and prime day will be as big as Black Friday.

Good point. OP should include something about this. The watch will be a good deal if series 2 is sold for £199.

It's not midnight so prices are not reduced yet

With so many different deal days and occasions, soon everyday is a "deal" day...in other words - normal pricing.
Skymonkey
10 Jul 17#14
Is that correct though? Series 2 white Apple watch £199? The series 1 black is also £199
hitchinboy
10 Jul 171#15
The Apple Watch s2 links to a series 1 not series 2
Either prices are wrong or not up yet, S2 watch at £199 is unlikely, it would be half price.

OP posted apple watch S2 White as £199. They have now updated to S1. Must have been an error.

FWIW there's hardly any difference between S1 and S2 Apple Watch. S2 adds independent GPS and a slightly brighter screen (that you will probably end up leaving on mid brightness anyway like I did), I'm still questioning whether it was worth that much more for it. Though I may thank myself for it in x years when they release an update that excludes S0 and S1.

Reckon John Lewis will pricematch the watch?

11 Jul 17#41
It's only a trap if you don't enjoy it. Some people enjoy iPhones and Apple's ecosystem so for them an Apple Watch is fine and dandy, and this is very competitive with Android Wear prices.
2minutenoodles
11 Jul 17#42
I agree, If you get this you need the phone and it's all overpriced. I was all for apple until they changed their warranty process. My iPhone 7 has been sent away and sent back with the same problems. Will be moving back to android.

How have they changed their warranty process, out of interest?
2minutenoodles
11 Jul 17#45
Used to send phone away (or take into store) and they give you a like new (perfect) refurb. Now they take your phone and send the same phone back to you but call you every day while throughout the process. In my case they sent it back scratched and still with issues. I was then told to go to an Apple Store where I was booked an appointment and the specialist would call me while I was there, the store they booked didn't deal with warranty and I wasn't called. It was a wasted trip, I contacted Apple and the 'Specialist' in Greece apologised and said to leave it with her and she will get back to me. She never did. I need to book it in for a store appointment at an actual Apple Store myself soon, it is quite far away but hopefully they will sort it. Have been sent around in circles and never had an experience like it with Apple in the past. I have owned loads of their gear and have converted my family to iOS.. lol.

Of course its a trap, it reduces consumer choice and reduces the chances of you leaving the ecosystem. Microsoft got slapped with an anti competitive practice court ruling for less.

I got a second hand SE replaced a few weeks back. It was about 8 months old. I had to go back as they didn't have my model in the store but they emailed me once it arrived and I just had to turn up and collect it.

I think you're just being grumpy. There's nothing anti-competitive about it - they make a phone, they make a watch to work with the phone. Why would they make it work with a different device if they don't need to? That would involve specifically building software features to allow for this, and would mean hobbled features on that platform, since certain parts of the smartwatch would not work with the Apple Watch if it were paired with an Android device, just as certain features of Android Wear devices don't work with iOS devices.
Apple have obviously made the decision that they don't need to make the device compatible with Android as they want to keep the experience consistent.
I have a Moto 360 Gen 2 and it works great with my P9 and is rubbish with an iPhone. Maybe Apple just didn't want to go down that route as they have enough guaranteed iPhone users anyway.
As for it being a trap - I'm sorry but that is just utter nonsense. The consumer has the choice not to buy the product and knows full well that it will only work with Apple devices - it lists compatible devices on the box and the website so there is no confusion. If someone decides to buy the Apple Watch and later on wants to go with Android then they have the freedom to sell it and buy an Android Wear device pretty easily.
Android Wear only worked on Android devices for a long, so who knows - maybe Apple will make it compatible in the future. They have so many iPhone users to tap into though that I don't really see why they'd bother.
OrribleHarry
11 Jul 17#52
Look into the Microsoft case, all they did was bundle a free browser with Windows and they were fined £1m a day as it was deemed anti competitive to other browsers.
This is worse.
Say you buy a watch then the next device you fancy isn't iOS, it puts you off making that switch, and as a result is anti competitive.

11 Jul 17#53
Except this was an O2 refresh deal so the phone was used and well past the 30 day limit.

11 Jul 17#55
That's claptrap in my opinion. Nothing remotely similar to that. Should Samsung have gotten in trouble for making their Gear watches and Fit bands only functional on Samsung devices (up to the S line) too? They were the first major smartwatch manufacturer and did exactly the same thing. If I look back through some old threads will I find you criticising Samsung for this?
misterleoni
11 Jul 17#56
Just looked at some other devices - the Gear VR only works with Samsungs (officially at least), the PlayStation VR only works with the PS4...my Kenwood K Mix lasagne attachment only works with my K Mix. At this rate a lot of people are in trouble for locking in users.
OrribleHarry
11 Jul 17#57
I'd say the same of any large company doing the same.
Under the Competition Act, an anti-competitive practice is defined as any practice that has, is intended to have, or is likely to have, the effect of restricting, distorting or preventing competition. The Competition Act may appear to replicate the monopoly provisions of the Fair Trading Act, but it allows investigation into the specific conduct of an individual firm or group of firms, rather than a more general investigation of the market, as the Fair Trading Act requires of the MMC.

11 Jul 17#58
Again as far as apple were concerned the phone was at least 6 months old, they had no idea where I got it from so the 30 day thing does not apply. My point to the other user was perhaps they had a bad experience. The warranty terms have not changed.
Back to the point of this site these are a good deal if it's what you are looking for regardless of people's opinions on brands and brand compatibility.

Sadly a lot of the time the people commenting have no interest in contributing anything other than their disdain for a given company rather than giving feedback on the product or whether they think the price is hot in line with the RRP.
I don't really get why people care so much - I love all tech and don't care what other people prefer to use or how they wish to spend their money - up to them isn't it.
