The new Nokia 3310 takes the iconic silhouette of the original and reimagines it for 2017. The custom designed user interface brings a fresh look to a classic, whilst the 2.4 polarized and curved screen window makes for better readability in sunlight.

Reimagined for 2017. The shape may be familiar but the look and feel of the new Nokia 3310 more than lives up to its modern comtemporaries.

Impressive Battery. The new Nokia 3310 has a long-lasting battery - you can leave this phone on standby for up to a month. And if you love to talk, it's powerful enough to keep up with you the whole day long.

Distinctly stylish. Whether you're a traditionalist or love something modern, when it comes to colour the new Nokia 3310 has something for everyone.

What would you be using 3g for on this phone? Yes, it then excludes some networks (Three) but it's designed for low use and high battery life. 3g would severely affected battery with very little gain.

The new snake game is nowhere near as good as the old one, but I love this phone as a replacement for my old work one. It's tiny and the old predictive text took me way back, instantly got reacquainted with it.

The camera is crap but nobody is buying this for its camera.

Because 2G networks are slowly being allowed to slide into oblivion, cause network congestion and are being phased out. Your comment about 3G adversely affecting battery life was probably true back in 2006, it's more efficient than 2G these days, if only because you'll get better signal.

This is incorrect information. In the UK it's a far more likely scenario that 3G will be turned off well before 2G. The original estimates for 2G & 3G turn off was initially around 2020, however this is no not at all likely for 2G. The reason for this is primarily due to the volume of embedded devices that have been sold and are still in action. These devices are everywhere from nurse call systems, to alarms, to industrial machinery and even 'smart' meters. Although newer embedded devices such as cars have the option to update the majority of these systems sold in the early 2000's do not. Estimates in the industry for certain networks put the data around 2025. It is likely that 'EE' will be able to switch off 2G much earlier, however this is not the case for O2 and Vodafone.

Additional, 2G radios are still more power efficient than 3G (for standby time, making calls and sending SMS).

This is hot VS the RRP, especially if it turns out to be unlocked.

Not entirely sure why people are so keen to buy these though as they look pretty rubbish to me, but a £10 saving isn't to be sniffed at.

Is anyone able to confirm if these are unlocked and if you still need to £10 get credit with this?

Two reasons:
1) Nostalgia
2) Aversion to smart phones.

Both of these are why my dad wants one.

edit:

NVM, found out you do need to buy airtime, so actual price is £48.99 (unless Fast track trick works).

Its a shame this isn't on 3G because i was interested in getting one and before anyone starts moaning.

I have a Three pay as you go sim because they are the cheapest for sending texts (2p each) they also seem much better with the call costs then other networks, we don't all sit here paying £100s a year locked up in contracts some of us just want a phone, so its rather stupid that this rather nice looking and cheap phone is not available on the cheapest pay as you go network

3G would have made this far more useful as an emergency phone as there are areas where you can't get 2G (believe it or not) but where there are 3G transmitters. It would have made almost no difference to battery life these days. It's a bit baffling that they added an utterly rubbish camera - something the 3310 is certainly not known for - yet didn't think to add bandwidth upgrades under the hood. I'm not even sure what they expect people to do with these rubbish pictures once they've taken them anyway. MMS at 40p a pop?
misterleoni
25 Jul 17 #30
I get that in principle I honestly do - like a bit of nostalgia myself - but my overriding opinion of this is that it neither looks like a 3310 nor acts like a 3310. They shouldn't have put a camera in it as this is an unnecessary upgrade for a phone that's supposed to look like its original and ruins the back of it, yet they only put 2G bands in it, which restricts its ability to get coverage in areas that have 3G and no 2G - this would have been an actual useful upgrade on the model.

Basically I don't think for the money it is either a very good tribute to the original model nor does it make up for it by offering features above and beyond £20 dumbphones which also don't look like the 3310.

For those that want it though, fair play. Not pouring scorn on them I'm just a little disappointed with this attempt from HMD as I think they could have done a better job and made some better decisions.

I've successfully unlocked payg phones from vodafone a month after a purchase. Just make sure you also use the free SIM card they usually provide. You have to wait 30 days before making a request.

The name's the biggest issue I have with it.

I wish they called it the 3310e or something because now it makes research/discussions more annoying, plus it fits old school Nokia naming schemes. To me they're just abusing the name to sell a phone few would otherwise care about.

Same goes for anything, if you have to put a date at the end to distinguish it then it's a bad name.
misterleoni
25 Jul 17 1 #35
I think we have to put this device in context:

What the NES Classic Edition teaches us is that at the moment there is a buzz for nostalgia. HMD have bought the Nokia brand and some of their patents and workforce and want to remind people of the brand. The 3310 was their first major attempt to do this, and to revive the brand for those who were teenagers and beyond when the 3310 came out, and for those who went on to become Nokia fanboys and enjoy devices like the N95. For those people the 3310 could have looked like a potato with '3310' on the box and a Nokia logo on it and they would pay £50 for it. I know a fair few people who are buying or who have bought this phone, even though they will never use it - though they convince themselves they will.

I used to be a fan of Nokia but I moved on long before they sank, so I perhaps can take this device on board with a little more cynicism than some...or maybe I'm just a grumpy old old.

Either way this is a device littered with anomalies and which doesn't look as much like the 3310 as it should be. I wonder if the design team actually ever owned one. The ideal 3310e (as you described it) would be as follows:

The same size and pretty much the same design as the old 3310, with a resultant massive battery due to the shrunken innards.

A transflective screen of the same size as the original, albeit colourful and much higher res

No camera - this is a dumbphone after all

All major world bands to increase the flexibility of the phone and make it at the very least an unbeatable 'glove box phone.

Lots of bright colours - much like this model.

It didn't really need much else. The thing that stops me spending £50 on this is not that I'm tight or that I don't think the tech is adequate; it's that no amount of convincing can make me think of this as a 3310 - it just feels like a cynical money grab, and for the first time ever I feel that a cheap knock-off from eBay actually might be at least as good as the original device.

I didn't give any fixed timeframes but the reality is, it's still a grey area - they're certainly not investing more in 2G or 3G infrastructure. Yes, old devices need 2G but 3G coverage is still good and does exist in places that 2G doesn't, given the falling cost of these SoCs, why they didn't put 3G in it is kind of inexcusable - you can't even pretend it's part of the 'classic charm'.

And as I said, 3G is more efficient because finding a 3G signal is more likely - no signal is incredibly inefficient for 2G or 3G.

I love the way people keep banging on about 2g at&t turned it off and sigapore and australia! Personally and according to EE's head 3g in europe is more at risk! 2g is fine for voice and texting and 4g for the internet! What exactly is 3g for? The pings are too high for the internet and voice quality difference is negligible! Also it does not penetrate as far as 3g. We will see in due course
plewis00
25 Jul 17 #48
No-one's 'banging on about it'. The cost of adding 3G and therefore extra coverage, is/was negligible these days, so they should've put it in this phone and made it a lot more useful to many at the same time, they could probably have charged slightly more too and people wouldn't have cared.
Anon32
25 Jul 17 #49
I wasn't talking about you but people keep saying 2g is obsolete just cause one countries mobile network has dropped it. I personally only use 2g as battery life is longer. Standby time is the same but talk time is reduced. I personally agree wi what your saying as 3g hasn't been dropped yet!

But I can see 3g going before 2g as 3g would free up more space than 2g for 5g. But i might be wrong. We'll see in due course

Bit like incandescents bulbs, CFL's and LED's. Its clear that incandescents will live on via halogen lamps (as more energy efficient) and CFL once deemed as the replacements for incandescents will be dropped by the appearance of LED's

I do think 2g is more resilient than what people seem to think especially in europe and asia

The problem I have with it, is that instead of keeping the software on it basic, they have over-complicated it for a phone that's supposed to be simple to use... My 75yo aunt still uses the original 3310, because she's seemingly incapable of learning to use any other phone... when I heard of this new 3310 being released, I was going to buy her one, but it's so different to the original she'd never learn to use it, and probably keep using her old one.

If you are on O2 or Vodafone, then 2G has better coverage (internally and externally) than 3G. I am not sure where you are getting any other conflicting information from. Not sure about EE as I do not have first hand information about their network.

In example you will actually find that areas where 4G has been rolled out that 3G signal has degraded. This IS intentional on the part of the network operators. Whatever they may claim, power levels have been reduced to prevent interference issues.

O2 & Vodafone's 2G signal utilise lower frequency spectrum, these frequencies have the best range, however have little bandwidth. This does not really matter for 2G. 3G on the other hand runs across multiple bands, and many of these bands do not have good range characteristics.

Not exactly identical to the old one in terms of looks and certainly not the same OS/software. The only thing that makes it different to modern smartphones is the keys and the crApp store. All the tracking and analytics 'features' from modern smartphones are present here.

As with most retro products these days, I'd say this won't satisfy those who owned the original, only those who vaguely remember it and want to pretend they are oldskool and owned/remember it.
gary333
25 Jul 17 #58
Sorry. I forgot to add supporting stats.
Landmass Not Covered (all networks) - 2G = 10% / 3G = 16%
Indoor Coverage (all networks) - 2G = 89% / 3G & 4G = 80%
No Coverage of A&B Roads (from any network) - 2G = 6% / 3G & 4G = 11%

Over the next few years we will see 4G have better coverage than either 2G or 3G.
plewis00
25 Jul 17 #59
To be honest, I think it's all missing the original point and that was, that this phone should always have had 3G in it from the get-go. You may be right about 2G, but anecdotally I seem to spend more time with 3G signal (when I don't have 4G) than 2G/no data and that's on O2, Vodafone and EE as I have phones on all of those networks (well, I dropped Vodafone last month as I was sick of their customer service). Yes, I know that O2 and Vodafone run on GSM900 which does penetrate and travel further. You still can't deny that if this phone had 3G, it would be better for everyone, and cost fractionally more only. I also don't trust their coverage maps - I've had them argue blind with me I should have strong signal in areas where I have none and they just pull up their map and you have no comeback.
wildecat
25 Jul 17 #60
I don't see why they couldn't include 3G voice, they could even have included 4G VoLTE for full voice coverage.
gary333
25 Jul 17 1 #61
If the device has a proper browser than yes, it makes sense to have 3G. No idea if this phone does, or does not. If it doesn't have a browser then it's pointless having 3G (unless of course you want to use 3-Three).

Although, my points above relate to the network as this is the line of business I worked in for many years, so get frustrated if peoples opinions are being relayed as fact.

The coverage checkers are computer generated. If you don't have signal then O2 are able to raise a network incident regardless of what the online checker states. A separate team will investigate these issues as no network signal is higher priority than just lower signal strength.

Most phone radios are programmed to latch on to the 'superior' network, even if this is at the expense of battery life (the broadcast signal is increased to compensate). Thus you would very rarely drop out of 3G down to 2G even if 3G is only 1 bar and 2G has 4/5 bars.

Please explain how you can be "off the grid" with any phone - the network operator is always going to know what cell you are in, and, in areas with multiple towers, can triangulate your location. The only way to avoid this is to have the phone switched off, with the battery disconnected for the truly paranoid - in which case it's not much use as a phone!

Nokia never sank. It made a smart move selling its mobile phone side. Nokia went to the bank with money, Microsoft lost a lot then shutting down the mobile division. Not a great move for the employees of that part but it's done similar in the past. Nokia Networks is still very much in the telecommunications market.

That all sounds very reasonable and believable. I didn't want to what I said to be fact, it's just anecdotal evidence based on my own usage - and yes, I definitely agree the phones will try and hold the 'better' network type over signal quality, but as you can't override that (without putting it to '2G only' or similar) that's all I have to go on. But still, this handset (the 'new' 3310) should really have included a 3G compatible SoC, maybe not 4G but the addition of 3G would have been a fraction of the BoM. I suspect the browser is going to be a basic WAP affair (if those pages even exist), I can't imagine a non-smartphone rendering some of the complex pages we have today.
mrwalshy1
25 Jul 17 #73
The vast majority of the 2G spectrum on all UK networks is being reutilised for 3G & 4G so there will be fewer and fewer places you will be able use this 2G only phone as this activity progresses. Stupid that they didn't put a 3G chip in it.

Is this forum for Nostalgia hunters or bargain hunters?
How could you justify such basic phone for about £40. Moreover with the current way of people using the phone, it is practically useless due to the keyboard structure and old 2G technology. Unbeliavable it reaches over 1000 degrees

Suspect hot votes are for Nokia nostalgia as if you do have to top up then this is basically RRP + potentially locked to Vodafone.

A load of people seem to love this new 3310 so I guess I'm just going to have to accept that I'm the crazy one and it really *is* a good design that they've thought through. Clearly they're going to make a killing on these as they can't cost more than 38p to make.

Hmmmm....a couple of eBay feedback comments mention these are fakes. Seems too cheap to be genuine. Do u know if they are genuine? Article on how to tell if it's fake or not.... https://devs-lab.com/spot-fake-nokia-3310-2017.html

There's no point checking if they're real as they're £25. There's no way anyone could be importing and selling these in the UK for half the price of the RRP when there's such high demand.

Been fancying a non-smart phone, something small, long battery life, however the only deal breaker would be Whatsapp. Is there anything like this available?

Several points: smartphone refuseniks, day smartphone - evening basic phone users, no App tracking feature (though of course network knows where you are), backup, a week worth of battery, workplace doesn't allow smartphone but allows emergency phone, work phone issued to employees for call-outs; BTW it has Twitter and email.

Tempted to buy his for my dad. Has an old Nokia but wont work in his car Bluetooth. Hoping this one will. However might give me my Wileyfox Swift once my new phone arrives.
He has a Jag XF if anyone has one of these and has trouble downloading the phone book via Bluetooth? Works fine on Android so thinking must just be the Nokia OS on the device...

Yeah that's true. The design is more similar to the 3410 than the 3310 too. The 3210 was the most popular and most sold so I don't know what they're doing.

Picked mine up today. Came unlocked and they voided the £10 voucher at the till, so £38 for an unlocked phone. Happy with the purchase. Cheers OP.
