Yeah it's quite complicated. Nokia sold Microsoft their phone division, but kept much of the most important IP. Microsoft has almost completely closed it's mobile division now. HMD and Foxconn acquired the remnants from Microsoft, Foxconn took over the remaining factories (which were mainly building feature phones), and HMD has the branding rights for 10 years IIRC.

So the new "Nokia" phones are made by Foxconn, HMD handles sales, marketing, and does some of the design. HMD is run by a lot of ex-Nokia people, is based next door to Nokia's HQ, and Nokia has a seat on the board. So it's not Nokia, but it's about as Nokia as you could get without Nokia itself getting back into phones, and even if they did that they'd likely contract out manufacturing to someone like Foxconn anyway.

The main thing is will this new Nokia make good phones, so far things look promising, and certainly customer interest and demand seems to be there. If regular software updates are delivered as promised (a big deal IMHO) and if the rumours about the high-end phones are true they could become a serious player in the smartphone business.

Had 1/2 an hour with one of these today. It reminded me of the Moto E3, only with better build quality, it was slow, laggy, the camera is absolutely rubbish.

To compete it needs to be under £80. Its not as good as the competition at this price.

"Manufactured with care"..as opposed to just throwing it together in a care free, happy go lucky, couldn't give a toss style?
"Read easily on the polarised display"..unless you are wearing polarised sunglasses, in which case it's a 50/50 as to whether you will see the image or a black screen. (If you've ever looked through two polarised lenses and turned one of them you will know what I mean).

Other than that it's a pretty big standard phone really. Nokia are struggling to get somewhere near the front of the mobile phone manufacturers now.

Got my nokia 3 today, seems ok
Reviewing it to see if its any good for a basic work phone to bulk order since the drop of windows phones

So far with android ive found it must have 16gb storage min to cope with day to day work
The camera in low light is really crap, fuzzy and peaking all over it

If i had my way i would be getting some cheap chineese non spyware phones but when ur providing "work phones" and the person see's the brand they pick holes before they've gave it a chance

I wouldn't hold out for a Surface Phone. In the period in which Microsoft have failed to release new hardware usage has dropped off a cliff and apps are gradually disappearing. Any semblance of buzz the platform had as recently as Windows Phone 8.1 has died to my mind and the platform is likely to exist as a compliment to Windows 10 for desktops for business users and for other manufacturers - such as HP - to offer.

I'd be very surprised if Microsoft bothers to release a phone now.

Never buy meat products that contain non meat/food ingredients. As for Nokia, well I wouldn't buy one with Android, and the two I bought with Windows 7/8 both were not supported with 10, 12 months after purchase, if I buy a Surface Phone from Microsoft it will be because the OS updates are guaranteed to be longer than the last OS's. A Nokia ? Maybe a 2/3/4G candy bar but never Android. I'll stick with my 6S until something better comes along, the 7 isn't worth it, Surface Phone might be, Nokia ain't.

That's not quite how it works - factories exist that build components for companies but that doesn't mean the factory just picks a load of off-the-shelf components and wang them into a housing. In the case of Apple they design their SOC, camera assemblies and things like the displays and then get manufacturing houses like Foxconn and even Samsung to build them according to the blueprints and tolerances provided. Whilst it's a true that many phones are built in the same factory this doesn't mean they're built to the same specifications and tolerances. It's the same with food - the same factory that makes M&S beef wellington could be making Farmfoods donner kebab meat, doesn't make them comparable products.

I agree launching the bottom of the range Nokia 3 wasn't the smartest move, I thought plan A was to launch here with the N 6 .They probably should have gone with android ( linux ) all along as that too is home-grown, and not with Mr eFlop. It was probably the modern disease of corporate technocratic culture that did for them. A smaller more nimble management system might succeed, I wish them well.

I just got an xperia z for 14 off eBay. Phones are good enough at 20 now more than 2gb is useless. I am selling all my 'high' end 100 phones. This new Nokia player is too little too late.

A bit likeapple then! They don't make anything just foxcon make it in china so cheap chinese phone and lets slap apple on it and people lap it up even queuing up to be ripped off! Yes it works and yes i have an ipad but i don't see why Nokia has to 'make' phones when apple do not!

I love the old Nokia feature phones! This industry does not stay the same you thonk in 20 years your still gonna have ios version 26 and andriod! Who knows what could be about then. Things change and nothing lasts forever

'Proper' Nokia released plenty of "half assed" phones over a long period, both before and after the Microsoft purchase. They have always catered to the low end.

I know *exactly* what happened in the past. Fact is, this is a licensing operation. Potentially a good one, but still licensing.
HMD license the name Nokia to build phones. If this were 'proper' nokia, then they wouldn't have released such a half assed phone to start with.

Microsoft acquired Nokia and ran down the Finnish operation. So not as simple as a licensing deal.these are some of the original Finnish crew who have managed to get their Brand back.
