The R7800 is excellent. Has strong recommendations on smallnetbuilder. First to use a new chipset etc. Its an excellent router. Has good custom support etc.
One of the very best.
Thought I'd clarify. Most routers use older stuff but keep getting promoted(looking at you ASUS).

No comparison. Get LEDE flashed and install SQM QOS, with cake, your connection will be much more stable. Saying that. This chipset isn't the most optimized for it.
I'm sure there's no custom firmware for the D variants. i don't want to use an R variant because I can't always guarantee I'll be using cable. I have been using Sky & BT now for quite some time.

Better off getting a modem separately, you will always be severely restricted as 90% of routers don't have a modem built in and the 7800D is crap.

For VDSL it's usually better to use a dedicated modem with a stable chipset that matches your cabinet, giving the best possible environment for a stable line. You then get the flexibility of using an R variant router with custom firmware and you can fiddle with your router as much as you want without adversely affecting your VDSL sync. It's usually easier to get detailed line stats from a dedicated modem too.
The R variants are typically better supported and updated by the manufacturer, compared to the D equivalents.

Indeed. The VDSL module in the D variants is buggy and unstable, especially the Lantiq chipset in the D7800.

AC87U sucks for VPN
1Ghz Broadcom CPU vs 1.7Ghz Qualcomm
Considering Qualcomm CPU is known to be better for VPN at same clock rate and then it's 1.7Ghz....
The R7800 is basically 2 x the AC87U in real world performance for VPN and that makes the AC87U a turkey for any kind of fibre line. Only suited to ADSL2+, if that.

You're probably better off flashing one of the custom firmware. Much more functionality.

I had a D7800 from the 2016 Black Friday, it was a piece of trodden turd so I sent it back.
I spotted it again in the Warehouse section, got an extra 20% off and ended up with the £266 modem/router for £122 in 'used - very good' condition.
For that price, I might be able to ignore the issues if they haven't ironed them out through firmware yet.

My R7800 with DD-WRT and is dual core 1.7ghz CPU does a great job with a fast VPN connection.

Got the AC87U last week, absolutely stunning piece of kit. Over the moon with it. VPN functionality is spot on and the UI is great. Improved signal around the house as well. Super useful guest network function as well, so as to keep people off of my gateway.

looks like you can get Alexa to control some functions on the router via the Netgear Skill.
