Hello,

Just bought this motherboard as part of my new Ryzen build (2nd cheap rig using mainly old stuff), this is the cheapest x370 board you can buy (that's decent) and on top of that you can claim £17 cashback from MSI making this even cheap at £95.99! As with the X370 chips it supports SLI/Crossfire and Overclocking, B350 board only support OC and no SLI/Crossfire (note some may support CF but AMD don't recommend) while A320 is for non overclockers. The MSI cashback offer ends on Monday 31st July so be quick if you are going to do a Ryzen Build. This board has all the key features and perfect for thos wanting to upgrade their CPU in the future.

Note: TBC offer 1.05% too
MSI cashback link: https://msi-promotions.com/gb/en/pages/summercashback/home

Claim cashback after 30 days of the purchase date.

Still deciding on weather to go for the Ryzen 3 1200 or Ryzen 5 1600. Will be overclocking on Stock cooler for now (dont see the point on spending loads of money on a custom cooler as they OC to 4.0ghz max and stock cooler can do 3.8-3.9 keeping within temp limits).

I currently have 2x GTX 670 2GB cards, 60GB SDD/500 HDD, 8GB DDR4, 750W PSU (sold my old motherboard and CPU). My intentions are to upgrade the GPUs over the years (mainly buying used and doing SLI/Cross fire) and also add more ram, might buy a NVMe later on too.

Both 1200/1600 have the same PCIe lane support of 24x, X370 boards are good as you can utilize this well by:

x8x8 for 2x GPUs (16)
x4 for NVMe (4)
x4 to other chips (4)

Totaling 24 lanes

Let me know your thoughts, thought I'll share this with you as this is the cheapest x370 board thats decent and has cashback too.

PS. My main rig is a 5820k (h110i AIO) @ 4.5GHZ, 2x MSI 980Ti (OC) SLI and 16gb DDR 4, 1TB Samsung SSD/4TB HDD, X99 SLI Mobo (2 years old now)

Hi all,

Just to update you all, have gone for the RYzen 5 1600 chip, Just bought a new sealed one off ebay for £155  via counter offer.

The guy goes to the trouble of posting a very good deal and the best you can do is to call him a snob?

Stay classy mate.

If I was building a Ryzen based PC I would be all over a deal like this. I love MSI Mobos.

I find it funny how you had to say "(2nd cheap rig using mainly old stuff)". There's always been a lot of snobbery around PC building in terms of building what you can afford and your comment almost feels like you're justifying your own build of cheaper components.
At the end of the day, it's a decent value for money system you're building - we won't judge you on what you'll use it for.

Personally to me, I can never understand people's need to watercool the CPU. Sure if you want the ultimate overclock then watercooling will be the way to go but for the majority, I don't quite understand it.

Think of it like this, Your GPU uses around 150-300+w of power and has approx 1.5cm x 16cm x 11cm of space around it.

Your CPU uses around 65-95w of power and has approx 12cm x 12cm x 14cm around it.

Which one can support the largest aircooler? The CPU of course! I have been using my Scythe Ninja comfortably for the last...errm 8+ years? And no doubt will be used on the Ryzen too. You have the space to cool the CPU adequately, sometimes even passively.
The GPU on the other hand, it is sweating under it's stock aircooler, it NEEDS watercooling, especially when you realise, that 150-300w of power, most of it ends up back in the case, heating up the CPU........

If you have the choice, watercool your GPU, aircool the CPU.

G Skill Tident Z RAM is perfect for Ryzen - some of the best on the market.

FYI anyone who isn't sure what DRAM chips their RAM is using can download Thaiphoon Burner to check.

Depends what you're using it for is my guess? I have this board, Ryzen 1600 and trident ddr4.... I'm using the stock cooler at the moment with no issues and not getting that hot. In fact I have a brand new Corsair H100i v2 and I'm thinking of selling it now as the stock cooler is doing just fine!
I do video editing and general use, not gaming so that could be why the stock fan is adequate for me?

+1 for CCL.
I always RMA through them, because if the manufacturer doesn't come back with a timely response CCL will replace the item instead. Very good customer service!

I understand your frustration, my point being that manufacturers are all the same, release products which aren't always thought out properly. My Asus board had a hardware design flaw, something which I raised but was refuted, especially as I replaced the motherboard around 6 - 8 times in 2 years. Amazon refused to refund at that point too, even though it would have been a cheaper option.

I am surprised they didn't send you out a new bios chip (assuming it's socketed).

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/X370-GAMING-PLUS.html

Has latest bios and also confirmed vendors support list info (select compatibility under product services). Note latest bios is dated 27/06/2017. The board has had several bios update mainly on improving RAM options. Good service so far from MSI.

I have contacted CCL directly and they have confirmed it will run Ryzen 1600 and 1200 out the box, They have also confirmed the the Corsair Vengeance Ram will work too (this is what im using). Also to note that said that if there is any issues and the board requires an update then they can arrange for collection and do this for you (you can get it done before delivery if you contact them directly). Great service so far, since they are not too far from me i can pop in if needed. CCL customer service - 01274 471206

I'm running a r9 285 - nice card but the 2gb VRAM really does kill some games. Be nice to "borrow" my brothers 1060 6gb and see where the bottleneck lies. I'm hoping 1070s drop back to a reasonable price - there are a few 1060s on preorder for reasonable prices at the moment though so that's an option. Zotac one for £240 for example, so I'd probably go that route if things keep up.

My issue wasn't so much with the bricking (everything has the potential to die), but their attitude. Refusing to accept what was blatantly a bug on their end, asking for a non-trivial amount of money to fix their mistake, and trying to silence customers on their forums to hide the issue. This "service" was from multiple employees at MSI so I am led to believe it is a systemic attitude there.

The bug in question was with the USB updating of the BIOS. Instead of asking the user which file to use, or perform any kind of check on the contents, it just blindly writes whatever is at address 0 straight into the bios. Some guy found his BIOS was overwritten with some Word documents!
They knew about this issue, because they fixed it in a later release.

I agree, 2500k is an awesome CPU, defo go for the 1600 if you upgrade, no point of 1200 especially since yr 2500k is overclocked. If i was you, i'd probably sell the Motherboard, Ram, CPU and cooler on Ebay (they go for good money for bundle deals and you can leave it all on your board - use the money on your new mobo/cpu/DDR build) and the rest of your system simply plug into your new mobo build. not sure what your GPU you have but you can sell that on ebay. I sold my GTX 260 (2x SLI) for £40 on ebay with box in mint condition, used parts still go for good money.

A good purchase now is a GTX 780 on ebay - go for around £90-110, Passmark score of 7974 (GTX 1060 is 8713 - £260-£300 card, but you get DX12 and 3GB ram vs 2GB).

31 Jul 17 1 #26
I feel very often I'm breaking 12 gbs of RAM so I prefer the extra - that and seeing as ryzen seems to respond better to dual channel memory I feel 2 8gb modules with potential future upgrades is the smarter choice.

I have a i5 2500k @4.5ghz right now so would prefer the higher core count option, I'm sure I'd see some improvement in single threaded performance, but I'd rather save up the extra £80 and jump on a 1600 if I'm honest. Pricing a build tat the moment with the considerations is around £550 before the GPU  This is including a new PSU/SSD/Case however. Feel I might as well go the whole way if I'm upgrading!

Agree save the money and got for 1600 (dont bother with x versions), comes with a stock cooler too and can overclock to more or less to same levels of an x version (only go for x version if your not going to overclock at all and want the extra mhz). Use your money saved on better ram speeds.

31 Jul 17 #22
Wish i could warrant the money - I'd still need to pick up some DDR4 (and a ryzen processor obviously but thats a given) which really bulks the price up
komi to slayermatt
31 Jul 17 #24
Go with 8gb DDR for now (8GB is a sweet spot) and build up on that, I'm still considering Ryzen 1200 (comes with stock cooler and can OC on it), it's likely to go further down in price (like the 1600 went down from £230 to £190). This will happen overtime (maybe a £10-15 price drop after 6 months?), mobo's don't tend to go down in price, however some bundle deals do crop up

Save your money and get the 1600 - the 1600X isn't worth the premium, but it is a great chip regardless.

**Research your RAM using the motherboard QVL list - ideally look for RAM using single ranked Samsung B-Die chips for best performance and compatibility, but make sure whatever RAM you buy is on the QVL list** This isn't just a useful tip - there is plenty of RAM out there that will not work with X370 or B350 series motherboards.

Word of warning, MSI are terrible for BIOS and support. I had a top end (£140) MSI board which had a laughable, schoolboy bug that bricked the board, then MSI refused to fix it unless I handed over £40.
Tried to find out more about this bug on their forums and a mod closed down the thread.
Wouldn't touch MSI again.

Had a similar issue with Asus... motherboard kept dying and eventually out of pocket by £200. 2 MSI motherboards (one in a car) has been rock solid for years. All manufacturers have their 'issues'. Do you research before buying for anything, search for model and "problems" ;-)

Everything in life is Price vs Performance. Personally I don't mind spending extra but that extra must be justified with an adequate increase in Performance. With using older components you gain a huge boost in Performance for very little Price. If it suits your need, why pay extra!?

This is quite tempting as I've been thinking about getting a B350 board (wanting to replace my trusty i5 2500k with a 1700). I'd say go for the 1600 if it's easily within your budget, the extra cores/threads will be nice to have.
