My phones broken, so need a new one pronto. This or our friend the Wiley Fox for that bit more?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions :-)
Thoughts so far: This is cheaper, but no compass. Fox has compass, but poor support and possible issue with screen cracking easily. Argh, things are never easy!

Moto Phones are very basic no thrills phones but are very good value for money. Wileyfox phones have (imo) an all round nicer design I regards to software and hardware.
You couldn't go wrong with either phone, although since Wileyfox are an online company if something does go wrong you may need to wait a while (they also offer screen replacement for £15).
I have the 2 X no issues with screen, they do come with a screen protector applied which doesn't need to be removed.
Haven't had a Moto since 3rd gen, great phones just very vanilla for my liking.

Shame it's only 1 per customer as my wife & I need to replace our trusty but tired original Moto G handsets. It's obvious why they impose the limit though.
Can you store apps on the SD card? if not, 16gb is not enough.

Thanks OP. I need a new phone and this will do the job for the price. The only downside I could see in the reviews is that the audio quality when recording video is poor and the autofocus isn't the fastest, even the moto g4 is faster. But you cant have it all for this kind of money!

****! Didn't think of that. Yes, I have a Prime account and my wife already has another (non Prime) account. Too late now - we signed her up for the Prime monthly payment option and ordered one. The other thing I didn't consider until too late was that this phone is also in Warehouse deals at £166.31 but discounted by 20% making it £133.05.
It's described as used but like new in original packaging - it's possibly brand new but the packaging's damaged so can't be sold as new. I bet I could have ordered both from my Prime account which would have saved us the extra £7.99.

From someone that knows f all about the gadgets on phones.. what is a Compass on this as some have mentioned. If it's something that tells where to go when you're in a tight spot I doubt I need that.. so makes this a good deal I suppose. lol So please, anyone give me a heads up on what the Compass does. Cheers
It helps your phone to pinpoint the direction your phone is facing. Its especially useful for those who use the maps app for walking...etc. Phones without a compass try to use GPS and accelerometer calculations to guess the direction, but its not nearly as accurate.

It should work reasonably well as a sat nav, but it will never be as accurate as a phone with a compass. If you use your phone almost permanently as a sat nav, its best to look for a phone with a full assortment of sensors.

Personally I went with the Moto G4 Plus from Warehouse Deals - acceptable condition for £91 after the 20% discount. 2GB RAM and dual SIM, slightly bigger battery, supposedly better camera, and as long as Amazon are erring on the side of caution with their condition descriptions still, probably how a new phone would look after a month anyway. Great deal if you do want the latest and greatest (for the G series) though.
Will this phone be better than my current Samsung S5, any recommendations. I have done comparisons but can't decide
chancooluk
10 Jul 17#59
No. The S5 is still a better phone overall than the Moto G5, although the software is better on the Moto. Maybe look at the G5 Plus? Its on offer at Carphone Warehouse at the mo for £199.

it's not even close to the S5, the CPU on the S5 is in a different league
The SD card is now seen as internal storage. In this configuration, the SD card is supposed to be left in the phone.
This should allow apps to run as if they were installed onto the actual internal storage as both the internal and SD card are treated as one automatically..
Per the Website:
From now on, the micro SD card becomes part of the phone storage system.
Technically, it can be used for any apps and data. But in Android Marshmallow, normally media files and app data are actually saved in the SD card.
When your actual phone storage is too low, some apps will be moved to SD card automatically. The bottom line is that you should not worry about insufficient phone storage as long as your micro SD card have space.
The pre-installed apps are always in the physical phone storage, not SD card.
You can check the storage usage in Settings– Storage & USB as shown above.
For example, as shown above, my 8GB Moto G 3rd Gen becomes a 40GB phone.
Please note, you can only see the SD card storage here. All other file explorer apps (e.g., ES file explorer) should display phone storage+SD card as one storage.
And again, you cannot specify file saving locations as SD card or phone storage in any apps.
Additional Note: Do not skimp on the Micro SD card speed class. Micro SD cards are slower than internal storage and using a slow Micro SD card in the set up could result in sluggish performance on the phone.

Without quoting myself, I just caved. STUDENT10 worked to give me a further £10 off to £125 total, but I do have Amazon Student prime thanks to the various NUS extra threads on here. Think I am going to like a slightly smaller phone to my G4, and the Dual SIM suits me for travelling. My technophobic old mum asked me if she should get a smartphone for emails a few days ago, so she can have the G4 to get used to one.

i smashed my phone screen yesterday at work. never a good thing to happen, but if it had to happen it was pretty much the best time to do it. My G5 is in the post.

bigmike20vt

please find a similar specced phone - for me most importantly with as good a camera and fast charging - for £135 then if this is so bad, and from a company where if things go wrong you can return it without hassle (ie so not a hong kong retailer!)
if your issue is its not an S7 level of phone, well, that is like saying a nissan QQ at 12k would be a bad deal because its not a range rover. 16 gb is not an issue as the phone takes a memory card. the important thing is the ram, and this has 3gb which is more than enough for just about anything you need on a mobile phone imo.
i admit, i am a little dissapointed they seeming cheaped out on the processor... its maybe a tiny bit weaker than the G4... but the G4 is for most folk a damn nippy phone imo and the G5 is no slouch either. what CANT it do that others can (aside from VR perhaps, but then, name me a good £135 phone from uk seller with all the G5 features that can.)

Instead of being so critical feel free to prove you're not trolling by posting a better spec phone for around the same price? Or maybe even post one as a deal, rather than just taking from the site you could help others

16gb is a joke at this phones original price point and because a phone has sd card support doesn't mean it wont be impacted by small onboard memory my dad has this phone you get about 11gb to use from the start not 16gb.
A lot of people will look at the like of Xiaomi and compare them price/spec to this and the winner is Xiaomi phones.
There is places even when ordering from china allow return to locations in EU Aliexpress offer this.
This Moto phone should of been this price from the start.

julieallen
11 Jul 171#91
16gb is fine as you can expand it using an sd card, the 3gb ram is more than most phones at this price point gives you, in fact I haven't seen any giving you more, most are 2gb.
2 year warranty, with easy and free returns.
Stock android, no malware or anything like you get on many chinese phones.
Decent camera.
Xiaomi are great till you have a problem (which is likely) then you have hassle returning them, even if the seller is ok, expect to be without a phone for a few weeks at least.
Not sure what you're expecting for £135, but I don't think you will get it!

a lot of people may.... and i have nothing against those phones my current phone is a bluboo xtouch and there is nothing wrong with it..... however the 1st one arrived with faulty battery, and it is illegal to post batteries to hongkong (which is none removable from the phone) so ended up paying another $40 to get them to send me out another one.
my bargain £85 phone ended up costing £120 which is not far off this one... it lasted about 12 months before packing up yesterday (the screen cracked whilst phone was in my pocket)
performance wise it has been ok, no complaints (but not close to this one), BUT the camera compared to my mums G4 is simply not comparable, and the same with the onboard video.
Xiaomi also make some great cheap phones and i considered one this time but every review i read mentioned that the cameras on the different phones were a weak point, and also i question how many updates they get. i can only comment on my bluboo but that is still on android 5.
PS i think most would expect it to have less than 16gb free... the OS has to go somewhere...... but i believe android 7 is pretty relaxed as to where you can put your apps... and besides i dare say take music and video out of the equation (which are fine for a memory card), 10gb is enough for most folk.
again i ask the same of you as of the other guy calling the G5 crap. please post a link to a directly comparable phone inc warranty, support, build quality, 4G and components..... because i may need another phone as well as this one!.

Thing to note (sorry if already mentioned) is that the G4+ dual sim is 3G on both sims at once (or 4g+3g) whereas the G5 dual sim is only 2G on the second SIM, so no good for a Three sim which needs 3g
So if you're really intending to use dual sim and want best flexibility, the G4+ is better - no idea why Moto Lenovo went backwards with this version of dual SIM.

That's odd, they refunded me £3 on my Prince CD, maybe try again and see if you get a different operator?

That's annoying! The countdown clock was until midnight so had just been reading reviews to make my mind up and had just decided to pull the trigger but it wouldn't add to basket. When I reloaded the page price had gone up for me too.

Just on chat now. Because it went OOS from Amazon. The remaining stock is another seller.
I'm really annoyed. I almost bought it on no rush delivery to give me time to make my decision and cancel it before dispatch if needed. But because of the countdown thought there was no need as had plenty of time left to read reviews and decided first.

If anyones interested theres a load of X styles on the warehouse from about £150 - £160, 32gb, 3gb ram, 21mb camera etc
I've just bought a like new one and will compare it with the G5 when it arrives and return the worst
Don't suppose anyones used the x-style and can comment on what its like? Second hand ones on ebay are selling for this price so I'm presuming it is a better phone, even though its older

Thanks in advance for any suggestions :-)
Thoughts so far: This is cheaper, but no compass. Fox has compass, but poor support and possible issue with screen cracking easily. Argh, things are never easy!

I unlocked it tho , would they take it back under 14 days return policy??
Cheers
You couldn't go wrong with either phone, although since Wileyfox are an online company if something does go wrong you may need to wait a while (they also offer screen replacement for £15).
I have the 2 X no issues with screen, they do come with a screen protector applied which doesn't need to be removed.
Haven't had a Moto since 3rd gen, great phones just very vanilla for my liking.

I suspect it's not a lot faster.
probably not much in it, but it doesn't have NFC if thats a deal breaker (and the reason I was considering the E4+)
I will pay more for bigger internal storage
It's described as used but like new in original packaging - it's possibly brand new but the packaging's damaged so can't be sold as new. I bet I could have ordered both from my Prime account which would have saved us the extra £7.99.
Still - cracking deal that! Lowest I've seen that phone. Megaheat.
This is to help with the problem of apps not running on SD cards on previous versions.
http://gadgetguideonline.com/android/android-marshmallow-guide/how-to-use-micro-sd-card-as-internal-storage-in-android-marshmallow/
How would this phone compare? On a par? 20mins to bite the bullet.
Edit: Looking at current X Play prices this phone isnt as good. Bloody pickpockets :disappointed:
SUCH FAIL FAIL FAIL!
Apparently I'm also getting a same day delivery slot this evening and a £2.99 Amazon pantry delivery credit as well.

Great phone great deal
Hot
I almost bought a £99 spare G4 a few weeks back. I missed it. this deal removes some of the disappointment for not grabbing that last deal.
if your issue is its not an S7 level of phone, well, that is like saying a nissan QQ at 12k would be a bad deal because its not a range rover.
Can anyone who owns a G5 recommend a good case?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spigen-Resilient-Ultimate-protection-Motorola/dp/B06XCW4V3Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499764523&sr=8-1&keywords=moto+g5+spigen
its not quite as good protection as some, esp on the corners, but its "ok" imo and its very lightweight and looks cool.
imo it should be good enough for the occaisonal drop. i hope so anyway
A lot of people will look at the like of Xiaomi and compare them price/spec to this and the winner is Xiaomi phones.
There is places even when ordering from china allow return to locations in EU Aliexpress offer this.
This Moto phone should of been this price from the start.
Old tech, hiding under a new numbering system.
Looking to upgrade from S4 zoom and looking at this or the vodafone smart ultra 7 for £100.
What should i choose?
Thanks
This phone has a radio that i use a lot when i travel, however this phone has no NFC. (no mobile payments)
I will wait for the LG Q6 soon to be released
my bargain £85 phone ended up costing £120 which is not far off this one... it lasted about 12 months before packing up yesterday (the screen cracked whilst phone was in my pocket)
performance wise it has been ok, no complaints (but not close to this one), BUT the camera compared to my mums G4 is simply not comparable, and the same with the onboard video.
Only 2800 battery barely more than my old Galaxy S4 that didn't last long at all. The rapid charging is nice though.
16gb internal.
I dunno man. I feel like Moto G's really should have stayed at the ~100 price ranges.
Are its features worth the extra 65 pounds? I would say yes. Better internal memory, better everything really.
Moto G5 plus for $180
oculus rift full pack for $299 :disappointed: ($399 and comes with $100 amazon credit)
Faster processor, better camera, more storage, fast charging and a few other things!.
So if you're really intending to use dual sim and want best flexibility, the G4+ is better - no idea why Moto Lenovo went backwards with this version of dual SIM.
eg:
