These are the lowfare prices I am guessing so hand luggage only and no meals on board.

Totally. 10kg Hand Baggage only (no checked luggage included), no seat reservation, and extra costs for changes.

10kg for clothes is fine for a 7 day trip. Decent price

I wouldn't even bother, my brother was refused an ESTA for overstaying by just 6 hours! Norway is a better destination imo!

the extra £45 for the luggage and food isn't that bad

That's each way... so £90 extra for luggage and food. If you are not travelling alone, that can easily add-up!
You should be able to go on hand-luggage for a week and pack sandwiches (buy water at the airport / bring empty bottles and fill them up at the airport)

I would happily have a cheaper fare without food - its always terrible on a plane.

For domestic or intra-european flights (circa 3 hours or so), yes. But flying from Gatwick to the US west coast (e.g. LAX or SFO) takes a lot longer.

I flew with Norwegian from Gatwick to LA return in August 2014. Excellent flight and service and we paid about £450 each. Shame the plane looks like a dog's doo daa!

One Norwegian route to avoid for the next year is Gatwick to Fort Lauderdale. FLL is experiencing horrendous delays on arrivals until a new terminal is finished. Up to 5 hours from touchdown to leaving the terminal (!) according to SKYTRAX reviews.

Yes, but nothing stopping you getting a couple of meal deals out of Boots before you get on the plane.

Flew with Norwegian to New York, return from Boston last year. We had our outbound flights changed to Wamos Air (a Spanish company i believe), but this was hardly a bad thing. There was no in-flight entertainment (who doesn't have a phone/tablet nowadays?), but we did get free meals. I'm 6ft 14stone and the seats were a little tight, but you get what you pay for.
The return trip was with a Norwegian Dreamliner - the best plane I've flown on. We went for the lowfare price, and I just bought a sandwich in the airport before the flight for $6, this easily lasted me the whole night flight.
From my experience I'd recommend Norwegian to the states. My friend has flown to Norway and had a similarly great experience.
