I've got an ideapad 500s that's about a year old now, very similar to this laptop. I'm pretty sure it has the same 2 cell battery as this one, so 6 hours is a pretty fair estimation if you're just gonna be doing some browsing and using office suites at a lower brightness setting. Streaming video at max brightness might lower it to 3/4 hours, and it'll obviously be worse if you try to run a game or anything taxing.

How poor? It says up to 6 hours, but I find the manufacturer's expectations are always a little optimistic.

Picked one up today. Just to clarify some points regarding this version (some inconsistencies I either read on here or in reviews). It does have a webcam, it has a full size hdmi port and ethernet port. It does not charge through usb port, it has separate socket. It is 1080p. Initial verdict is very happy speed is good enough for my use, tested playing 1080p movie from disk whilst streaming a second video on YouTube and also web browsing with a few tabs open and no noticeable lag. Not sure when I'd ever do this in reality! Sound/screen decent for price as is build quality. They have versions of this with better chips/ram selling for £600+ hence the good standard of asthetics I guess

I recommend to OEMs that they just go the way of Apple and get rid of removable storage. I mean the iPhones internal storage will be reading at 800MBps sequential, you'll be lucky if your Micro SD card will do 40, even if it's rated at 80...
Get rid of them and ship the phones with larger storage capacities. I'd rather pay £100 extra for a 128BG model, than £50 for a real Micro SD Card that's still over 10 times slower...

The CPU is fine for Windows 10, it's a modern, non-atom based, Pentium.
The GPU is surely only going to be an issue when gaming or messing in Photoshop, as it's perfectly capable of driving a 1080p Windows panel for general stuff.
Coulomb_Barrier
16 Jul 171#87
You have to consider that the weak CPU and GPU (Intel HD 510) has to power a full HD screen. Both would be stretched powering a 720p or 'HD ready' laptop screen let alone full HD, so this thing is going to be very sluggish.

I was thinking more along the lines of the 7 th generation kabby lake processors such as the i3 7100, 7200 and hd620 which seem to be more efficient for video and battery life. I'm just concerned when playing video in FHD the fan will be on all the time because of the extra load? I would probably want 8GB, so by the time I pay for the extra memory it may be worth spending an extra £60 or £70?
le_jaeger
16 Jul 171#83
I'd say average.
Don't be expecting anything near Apple sleekness or lightness. I'd say it's at least double the thickness and weight of my girlfriend's MacBook Pro.
But I bought it to replace an ageing 15.6 and compared to that it's awesome.
Would the touchscreen make it a better buy? I've been tempted by this for the i5 processor, but I only really need it for some browsing, word processing and maybe a few other things.

Been really pleased with it, proper SSD and a 1080p screen. Have been pleasantly surprised how well the touch screen works, and how fast it boots (<10 seconds).
Only mild complaint is slightly loose, rattly touch pad mouse. Been back in to store and two of three display models were similar so just accepted that I couldn't be too fussy at this price!

I'm pretty certain this doesn't have a backlit keyboard. I was choosing between this model with an i5 and 8GB RAM at Xmas and the similar HP Pavilion X360. Chose the slightly more expensive HP at the time due to backlit keyboard. To be fair, I would have preferred a slightly smaller screen (still @1080) for a couch-side machine, but this one is still great and the touch screen is genius. I found that Windows 10 Insider Preview caused massive battery use so now stuck with release builds, boo.

SSDs are the biggest performance factor in Laptops, ditch the HDDs for anything other than storage. I remember saying this around 2009ish when they started becoming popular and customers would bring in their Computers for repair. People would buy a new PC and wonder why it becomes slow over a little bit of time and then went and bought a Mac and said Windows sucked.
You don't need much power to do anything other than gaming or encoding media. Phones prove this years ago, they have flash storage which has no seek time...
Also stop using Micro SD cards, they're the main reason why I see so many Android phones lag. People buy them, either they cheap out or they're fake; they then put some vital things on them that lag out the OS as it tries to access those files.

16 Jul 173#46
One thing you have to look for in Curry's is the letter X or Z on the price label somewhere (maybe a member of staff can advise where) if it has an X the stock is being discontinued. Get a member of staff to check Local Delivery centre. If it is Z then basically you've got very little chance of getting it may only be display models left. Also X or Z products don't appear in website so go in store

Can understand where you are coming from, as my previous laptop had 15.6in (1366x768) screen however...
Even though the Yoga 14 has a slightly smaller screen, I would not go back to my old (15.6 HD) laptop. I hardly notice the smaller screen estate (on the Yoga)and even my old tired eyes can spot the difference between HD and Full HD screen resolution. An eleven inch screen however, is a step too far (for me).

There will either be a separate small compartment for RAM on the bottom of the laptop, which you can get to by undoing a screw or you'll need to undo several screws and take off the base. Either way, it's straight forward. Most likely have one slot for RAM so buy a single 8GB RAM.

Got tired of paying stupid money to Apple or Samsung and being stiffed on the contracts with o2.
Its a Brave New World...
This is also a touch screen and that Acer doesn't look like it is.

Good spec though for the cost,. May have been a bad batch
If you then want 256GB or 512GB, the jump in cost takes the mickey....
i was in southend yesterday and the number of fat women i see waddling around was worrying. i was thinking OMG, i am so glad i don't look like that. they were so bad, they had flop bellies like the men. (embarrassed)
i may go for the 11" for my next laptop as i find 15.6" on the large side for me. it's like having a blooming TV on my lap!
Mine does not have a backlit keyboard.
The service manual for these can be found at

RAM/disk upgrades require removal of bottom cover, and is covered in the service manual.
Better than an iPad if you're after a windows laptop specifically and certain full windows programs that aren't available in a tablet app store.
If you're after a tablet experience, the iPad is a much more polished interface and convenient form factor.
Windows 10
Intel® Pentium® 4405U Processor
RAM: 4 GB / Storage: 128 GB SSD
Rubbish soecs
Can't say I've ever used mine.
Yes, you'll have throw away, or try to sell, the existing 4GB.
I have a few issues with mine. The screen occasionally turns red on start-up, the left mouse click oftens acts as right & the fan runs for no good reason.
Any expertise gratefully received. Thanks

Only con is that one of the USB3 ports is also the power supply input, it's a a dual purpose socket.
The CPU is absolutely file (before anyone swoops in slates it).
It scores similar to an i3 7100u.
Hot from me.
This is a deal that will be posted in 10 years time on hukd...
