I can't speak from personal experience, but apparently they do. The big operators have some form of automated scanning to check for copyrighted material. That's as much as I've gleamed from various threads I've read on the forums over on the Plex site.

Warranty claim, yes... easy... the second part though are you joking? a 5TB external is the f* backup drive... the only way you could back up 5GB is to buy two of 'em. And before you say it, in my opinion cloud backup is for project files, photo albums etc. I would use a 5TB drive for media; TV shows, Movies, game and application ISO and sizeable plugins etc I use for software - stuff I can get again.

Bought a LaCie 2tb hard drive a couple of years ago, after just one year it has stopped working.

I'd agree, however a lot of people have movies or tv shows they have obtained in a questionable manner - for these people, they would need a local backup.

Related to this, I read a forum post recently about people who want to use cloud-based Plex - so their content is in teh cloud on Amazon or Dropbox etc. Someone pointed out that even if they own the original DVD/BluRay - there are questions around the legality of making a copy.

So while I agree that a cloud backup is the optimal platform - I'd argue it depends what you're backing up. Also, ever tried uploading 5TB or data to the cloud...that would take a LONG time.

The clouds is where it's at for backups anyone who spends on external drives for backups is crazy. For extra storage fine but not as a backup solution.

Yes USB 3 drives up to 16 terabytes can currently be used on Xbox one.

Well considering Lacie is owned by Seagate, you won't be seeing Western Digital Drives in these anytime soon.

Are Seagates, Hard drives still that unreliable? I thought they'd improved since they purchase Samsung's HDD division.

With a Seagate drive I would say unreliable - if course it depends on the exact model number but generic, home use drives are the most unreliable. Better to go with something aimed at the business/data centre market.

It is not really a Porsche - it has the same bog standard hard drive as the Skoda model.

Yup! Any external hard drive will work as long as its USB 3.0 compliant and at least 256MB.

Yeah I agree time is an issue for the initial upload or for someone who lives in a poor broadband area but even those who want to backup dodgy stuff there is cloud hosting with encryption which protects them from any checks on data stored.

Backing up tv shows etc to a local drive I wouldn't class as critical data so no harm lost if it mechanically fails and a local drive is good for that type of data but for stuff like family photos/videos and documents etc I would only store these via the cloud with them sync'd to multiple machines so I also have several local backups all automatically in sync.

Same could be said for any storage medium.

If you care about something make a backup, preferrably at least two with one offsite.

Either get up to date with current hardware and proper backup solutions, or go back to the 90s and your 8GB IDE drives! Comments like these only highlight the posters' shortcomings in proper data management, backup strategy and archiving. Sorry to sound harsh...

The Cloud, is just clever marketing technique. Anyone that uses a Cloud is like having a lead from your computer connected to someone else's computer who you don't know, that you give all your stuff to for them to have a look at.

He is assuming that data placed on here will not be backed up elsewhere. As such, when the drive fails everything will be lost.

Have a 2tb Lacie from before they were bought by Seagate. It is a 7200RPM drive and v quick. Really nice build quality.

Based on that I bought a 5tb, post-seagate. It's a 5400RPM and is slllooowww. Also the USB3 connector is the slim type on the new one (fat type on the old one), and the connection is a bit erratic/loose on the new one.

Good price for 5tb external hdd though, just don't expect premium performance / build quality.
