NVMe based drives works fine as a boot drives with Windows 10. You must be doing something wrong or reading the wrong tech sites.

Hi, it's not a bad drive, works well but is about 50% slower than others. I built a Z270, I7, 32Gb Ram and used this to boot windows 10. It's was showing benchmarks around 1300mbs read I upgraded to the Samsung SM961 and it achieved over 3000mbs same windows install, same drivers, same bios.

The headline speed is 50% slower and the same goes with basic town cars versus £100K sports car.
But the majority of users 'drive in town' much of the time where you aren't going to notice the extra oomph of the faster drive.
Or do you notice the difference when doing basic everyday tasks?

What sort of day to day speed difference do you notice with the Samsung vs the Intel (eg. cold boot times, loading times for common programs etc)?

NVMe has terrible problems running as a boot drive for windows though so for personal PCs there isnt much point to this for the price, it's great for raid though

I'm surprised as most mid to high end laptops use NVMe boot drives.
I'd heard that RAID can be problematic with NVMe drives due to limited support!

most of the problems seems to be either bios and people not realising the setup is different on w10 with nvme, and or trying to do raid with shared resources.
nvme and raid currently don't mix too well

Eh what are you on about? I've used a 512GB Samsung 950 Pro M.2 as my Win 10 Pro Boot drive on my latest build desktop for almost 6 months now and never had a single issue with it.

Huh? My PC boots from cold into Windows 10 in about 3 seconds from a 512Gb Samsung 960 Pro. Not seeing any boot problems here.

if you giving up that precious space in your pc ( and multiple sata ports potentially ) , do yourself a favor and buy a decent one like Samsung 960 EVO M.2-2280 250GB for 120.59
As for use case I would say these drives are perfect when it comes to use virtualization, heavy disk IO applications like video rendering or massive pictures to be digested and you can put your swap file on this drive too.
If anyone is talking or interested on high end devices and afraid lf "low" TDW/PBW, google sandisk sx350 :smiley:

Andddd.... Samsung only actually quote 75 TBW endurance for the 850 Evo 250gb, for example.
So 144 TBW for this is absolutely fine. It's a theoretical number and always conservative.

A lot of debate in here about whether these are quick or not. Having recently upgraded to a motherboard that has a couple of these slots, what are they best used for other than a boot drive (I have an SSD for that)? Could I put Steam on one?

It's marketed as a budget NVMe option at SATA prices so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here.
It gives much faster reads for the same price as a good spec sata drive and doesn't mess your case up with power and data cables - what's not to like?
If you want/ need the performance of a higher spec Samsung NVMe M.2 then spend 50% more and get the Samsung.

I got one of these free as part of the motherboard deal that I bought earlier this year. After doing research, checking reviews etc I found it wasn't great so I just sold it. Didn't even try it.

it works fine assuming your board, supports uefi (uefi booting) and secure boot (for w10) and along with no shared resources on the pcie slots .. And really all mobos that have m.2 or u.2 slots should be doing

This is NVME. The reads are much faster than SATA.
The write speed isn't great but lines up with top end SATA speeds.

The read speed is 3x that of the fastest SATA SSD and the endurance is 144TB which is fine for a 256GB drive.

144TB endourance would let the drive last arounbd 10 years if you write 40 GB/day on it.
However, German c't magazin just tested longevity of SSDs. Samsung SSD 850 lasted for writing 9,1 PByte on it, which would give it a theoretical rate of 623 years to last with an average 40 GByte/day that you write on it.
