it looks like the Hive boiler controller (i.e. the small square box wired into the boiler) is pretty much the same size as the receiver of an existing BG wireless thermostat. The Hive website speaks of interchangeability with certain other systems. Is the old style BG wireless thermostat one of these, so the box is is just physically swappable on the existing backplate without any re-wiring necessary ?

Ah, ok unless you know exactly how to wire up you may need an electrician to wire up the receiver depending on your boiler, I think mine needs a 4 core wire, let me know how you get on

I just wired mine up the same as my previous thermostat receiver, just took a picture of the wiring on the old and made sure i put the wires in the same

Went ahead and got one, should install it this weekend. I'd appreciate any tips if you have any if you've done it on a similar system. I had thought about just leaving the existing timer in situ, but on constant and wiring out from it, with Hive then doing the actual switching etc.

I think I also read somewhere about leaving all thermostat radiator valves to max, as otherwise it's working against the Hive unit and not only less efficient, but could add stress/wear to the boiler. However, can't find it again - anyone know if this true?

It sounds like you've got dual channel - I only have the single channel (combi/heating only) but I can boost my heating by pressing the button on the receiver unit. It means anyone in the house doesn't need the app or need to know how to use the thermostat. Does that do the trick for you?

Something wrong there, you don't need a boost on hot water on a combi boiler, it's either on or off (AFIK)
This model only has a single channel, just to switch the combi's ch on.
I'm guessing here, but do you have a duel channel system, and could the channels be connected the wrong way around?

Funny how the thermostat/programmer only allows boost on the hot water, not the central heating.
I know my phone app allows boost on both, but if I'm out and wife or kids come home it would be nice just to boost CH for an hour, without having to press the "higher" button 20 times.

Picked mine up at the start of the week and finally got around to fitting it yesterday afternoon.

All in, took about 55 minutes to get it installed, connected and set up. For me, I wired everything from scratch with new wiring. The receiver next to the boiler and the thermostat where my old one was, just isolating all the old wiring. I could've put the receiver where the old thermostat/programmer was and reuse that wiring but then that's also the ideal location for the therm.

No pairing issues, firewall issues - never needed to use the scratchcard that came with it. One of those rare occasions where everything just worked! It did take the full 15 minutes from plugging the hub in before it became usable but the instructions do say that so be patient. Did all the registering through the android app (brand new account for me).

Can definitely see why people say the V2 thermostat is an expensive upgrade (especially for a V1 at this price!) - I'm finding I'm using the App or web browser. For £60 this is a brilliant way of getting into the whole connected home thing, even if it's just to see if it's right for you.

There was certain button holding squence needed to pair the thermostat with the receiver, I also had the hub connected a couple days before not sure if this screwed this up, if in doubt ring them I did not even wait at all straight to operator and was done in 2-3mins

Could you tell the problem you had, and how it was rectified, might be a big help for anyone searching the interwebs!

Installed today, had some issues with pairing but telephone call to hive sorted it.

Well it works, I could not justify the price of nest, not needing the features, I just want to be able to turn the heating on from two storeys above thermostat and it does just that!

Plus this seems to do the daylight saving if I'm right, meaning not having to change the time fwd/bkw when the clocks change.

Anyone know where I can find a good easy to understand guide as to whether this will suit my heating systems- not to bore with the details, but I potentially need two of these for different set-ups, one combi, and one conventional system with slightly unconventional plumbing!

Is the timer built in to boiler or external? If external, many mechanical timers have a standard backplate that may be compatible with this, worth checking first.

Yep, just split the wires after the timer, but put the unit where it can get a good signal.

I still have my pin timer connected and just have it turned to constant on so it bypasses the timer, the hive does everything after that :smile:

I don't have a room thermostat with my combi boiler, just a basic pin timer. Can this still be installed by wiring it up in lieu of the timer, then? I'm fairly competent, just have not poked that much in my boiler other than disconnecting and removing the main board to dry out after a leak.

I'm due a service soon as part of my Worcester cover plan, so it will be checked before winter use, but I wonder if I give them a ring and see if they'll install at reasonable cost?

The £80 is for a new hub, as you can't re-register them. Disgusting, not very environmently friendly that you have to dispose of the old hub. Just a way for BG to scam money out of new home owners, and to prevent selling used equipment. How can they justify £80 for a hub when you can buy a whole system for £60!
BTW, unregistered v2 hubs can be picked up for £40 on ebay which would be the cheapest option for you.

You only connect the Hive hub to your router which you place next to it. The Hive hub then talks wirelessly to the receiver which you place next to your boiler. The receiver is wired to your boiler. You won't have any long Ethernet cables running anywhere unless you have a very good reason to have your Hive hub significantly away from your router. Only possible reason for that would be if the distance from boiler to router is far.

How easy it is depends entirely on your setup.

I got this installed for £60 by our local electrician guy, it's alright but does seem a bit janky, the app seems to perform pretty inconsistently.

Still though, £60 is the price of a normal thermostat without all this WiFi stuff.

The person who posted it again a couple of days ago had theirs deleted, likewise the one from a few weeks ago. The older one was a bit stupid to delete as that ran for a few days and had a lot of useful info not in the original.

It's a V2 hub, so works with the rest of the Hive ecosystem and will continue to do so.
