IMHO it's not very fair to be so negative about something if you have not actually seen it. After all just because something is cheap does not always mean it is not good nor does paying a high price guarantee quality.

You might like to do a little research on Fire angel alarms, I had 5 installed by the local brigade after a house fire, they all carried a 10 year battery guarantee. All failed in under 3 years; 4 making making an electrical 'arching' sound.

Would you trust your life with a £1 smoke detector. Wouldn't compromise on something this important. This companies products are never ready.

I'd ask advice from the fire service, some will be entitled to free ones with 10 year batteries (dependent on budgets due to austerity) but even if you're not I'd buy a reputable brand like Fire Angel or whatever they recommend. B&M's sells some really rubbish electrical goods branded as EverReady and I wouldn't trust mine or my family's life with their stuff.

These are so cheap; they instantly reminded me of the Only Fools And Horses scene at the auction of "smoke-damaged fire alarms".

I don't need to. The majority of fire services still recommend using them and the problem batch was in 2012. I think the fire service are in a better position to research the quality of their products than you or I can via any internet searches. As I said I'd get their advice, maybe a free device as well and if they don't specifically endorse fire angel, that's fine. I just don't expect them to endorse devices specially imported for B&M stores carrying the EverReady brand which is not the EveryReady company that people used to associate with quality batteries. They are poor quality and I would expect anyone sensible who really had personal experience of any smoke alarms that were arcing would go out of their way to get advice & buy the the safest products in the future, whatever they may be! confused

We had a couple fitted by our local fire service, they were Kidde branded supposedly lasting 10 years but neither of them did - they both lasted around 2.5 years before they failed - very surprising considering they had around 3 or 4 chunky lithium batteries inside them.

Personally I'd just go with recommended reputable brands that specialise in these things. Their businesses would ultimately collapse if they didn't take safety seriously. B&M's, Home Bargains, Wilko, Pound World own brands etc. would probably ride the storm because they don't have their eggs in one basket.

Some people seem to think Fire Angel / Kidde are better, others say they fail after only a couple of years.

These are £1. Why not buy a pack of these to use alongside your Fire Angel / Kidde ones. Better to be safe than crispy bacon?

Undoubtedly these will work fine, they're cheap because they're on offer and I imagine BM wouldn't stock or sell substandard Smoke alarms. If you're not happy with them the included 9v batteries make this deal worth it for them alone.

There is no austerity.
Gordon Brown was borrowing 3% of GDP at the peak of the economic cycle, which was grossly irresopnsible.
Shortly after he announced the end of boom and bust, we had a bust and he was left borrowing about 12% of GDP, which is enough to leave us insolvent like Greece in a very short time.
The Conservatives have made a half hearted attempt at getting the budget back under control, but they are still borrowing about 4.5% of GDP.

This will still leave us in severe financial difficulty in about 20 years, but since the opposition are even worse and the left wing media seem to ignore basic economics, why should they take the criticism for trying to be responsible ?

Raising taxes is an option, but there is enough data around to show that leads to lower economic growth and lower wealth (probably because politicians never spend money efficiently).

As for the fire alarms, well 2 branded products for this price is excellent. From a failure mode perspective, I would prefer 2 different brands though.

The Fire Angels supplied to Fire services come from the government, so saying these will be better is questionable (and could well have been bought for 50p each!!).

And yes, there are a lot of faulty ones, but do you really think theyll last 10 years either?? And quite often the smoke alarms lives are shortened because theyve prob been set off lots of times-or they have been tested weekly (as you should).

Im a fireman, and have a couple of smoke angels, but wouldnt hesitate in getting these-just because something is more expensive, doesn't mean they are better.....and you can never have enough of them, just dont put them in the kitchen!!

If you contact your local fire service if they alarms they have fitted go faulty for some reason I'm sure they will come out and replace them

The smoke alarms I've got are incredibly sensitive. I mean the second any sort of slight change to the air quality due to anything burning and it goes off immediately. Really confident with them, plus they've improved my cooking! :smile:

If you're concerned about them failing then do as I do and buy 5 packs and install 5 upstairs and 5 downstairs, they look nice all clustered around the ceiling lamp. £5 and five times more likelihood of them working.
