The car wont quite look like the one in the pic. This bad boy runs on 16 inch wheels....

http://images.autoexposure.co.uk/AETA20949/AETV39264497_1b.jpg

Also the "Artico" leather is fake leather, not real leather - its vinyl seats by any other name, so basically flat white or black paint with black vinyl seats.

So what cars will we be able to buy that won't be affected by a 10% duty? Ones made here will still be subject to tariffs on car parts and any 'our' manufacturers export will be subject to the same tax.

I understand it's a difficult concept to understand, perhaps if I wrote it in big letters on the side of a bus it would be easier for you?

For those who said my criticism of this car is ridiculous, just to let you know i found and posted a "similar" deal. Passat TFSI, brand new, £15,911 on the road. Currently at 800 degrees and climbing.

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/brand-new-vw-passat-1-4-tfsi-s-15-911-5-698-saving-drivethedeal-com-2736356

Probably wont "beat" the heat of this because for some people the Merc badge trumps the wrong spec, but to me the Passat @ £15,911 makes for a more honest package than this at £21K odd.

Its the wrong car at the right price. They're being sold off cheap, but even at that you can buy a year old one on autotrader for £16K+ from a dealer, meaning a trade price of £14K, which suggests they're unloved on the used market too.

Any broker is going to be there or there abouts on this car - Broadspeed are with a few £ of it.

The first place i check if we're buying a new car is all the main brokers online, then ask my local dealer to pricematch or we'll buy from a broker.

Not difficult.

If you want to stick with German cars, Audi (via Broadspeed) will sell you an A4 TFSI SE that doesnt have vinyl seats, sits on a more palatable 17 inch alloys for pretty much the same price

https://broadspeed.com/new_cars/Audi/A4/Choose_Number_Of_Doors/Saloon/

For something with a sportier slant but a little smaller, they'll also sell you a A3 TFSI Sport Saloon with sports seats and 17 inch alloys for similar...

https://broadspeed.com/new_cars/Audi/A3/Choose_Number_Of_Doors/Saloon/

For something as big or maybe even a bit bigger, Volkswagen will sell you (via Broadspeed again) a 2.0TDI SE Business Passat Auto for the same money. Much better spec, doesnt have vinyl seats and has 17 inch alloys, parking sensors, radar cruise and touch screen NAV.

You can easily get a better spec'd car for the same or less money new. Ford, Vauxhall, VW will happily do that.

Will be it a Merc? No. Will it be a better car? Quite possibly. Will it be a better spec'd car? Yes. Absolutely.

Right price, wrong engine, wrong trim level and wrong spec as far as i'm concerned - which is most likely why they're having to discount them so heavily to get them moved on.

And i think it's a cracking deal and car. Where else can you get a similar spec car without spending anywhere near this. If you want the car, you could have saved a few people getting roped off. I have shown colleagues at work your deal who may now go ahead so thank you for posting. There response wasn't "ah yes but you can get a much more reliable second hand Japanese car for similar money so this deal is pants".
pgilc1
8 Jul 17 #140
I agree - its a cheap car and the voting of over 1000+ concurs with that.

However my post is not a ridiculous post - its common sense. Whilst its a "cheap" Mercedes, who really wants to drive about in, relatively speaking, a poverty spec Merc on 16 inch wheels and vinyl seats? And how many of the HOT voters (myself included) will actually go out and buy one?

And no, i didnt say anything like "go out and spend twice that on a different Merc instead" i said that if you really want a merc, buy the right one, and if your budget doesnt stretch to the merc you want, dont buy it - there are plenty of other decent cars about with the right spec.

And that applies to whether your budget is for new or used.

And ironically - whilst slating me you're of the same mindset - you wouldnt personally drive this you'd rather pay more for an AMG trim variant.

I posted this deal because at £9k under list its a good price. Personally not the model for me as I'm also looking at the AMG however, having read through all of these comments this one is typical of the more ridiculous posts. If you like it, buy it, if not don't. You really can't come on here to tell everyone how poor a car is with the reasoning 'we bought an AMG45 for slightly over £40k'. Horses, courses...

7 Jul 17 #136
Agreed - yes, great price for a new merc, but a merc is all about the desirability. Who wants a Merc with vinyl seats and 16 inch wheels? Clearly not too many people or they wouldnt have to offload them at this price.

And well, yes i can compare it to used, because if i spending £21K on a car and thus could only afford a poverty spec new Merc then i WOULDNT buy it, given the myriad of nearly new choices you'd have.

Its all very well it be a "new merc for £21K" but drive it out the showroom and its a "used poverty spec merc".

If you're going to buy a Merc, buy a nice one. If you cant afford a nice one new, buy a used one. If you must have new and cant afford a nice one, dont buy one.

We bought a AMG A45 for, with a load of extras slightly over £40K. If our budget had been say £19K, we wouldnt have bought a 100BHP A160 SE, just because its a merc. Maybe some people would be impressed by an A160 or a C200 SE but ultimately to buy it, it has to impress us and frankly neither an A160 or C200 would do that.

No. Japanese cars are generally reliable, German cars are generally not reliable (despite their undeserved reputation).

As well as my first hand experience of working with both 'behind the scenes', every reliability survey finds the same.

Japanese cars are reliable as are German cars, we had a family Mercedes for 30 years and not one problem. As a family we have had German cars for 20 years and all of the cars we have had (Audi, BMW, Mercedes) have been very reliable. "A mechanic wouldn't recommend German at all" - what a pointless statement to make....

Please explain how it can be democratic when the elected members have no legislative powers. What policies or laws am I voting for when my elected representative can't instigate any? The overriding policy is the creation of a federal European superstate and all other decisions are taken with that objective in mind. That wouldn't be possible in a truly democratic system. If that's what you support then fine but don't hide behind the economic argument and faux democracy.

I take your point and in many ways i agree with you. Its still an entry level poverty spec (relatively speaking) Mercedes on 16 inch rims and vinyl interior.

Its just not where i'd be putting £21K frankly.

If i were spending £21K on a car on a big cruiser, i'd go nearly new and get something like this (granted at a bit more than the price of this)

Go do more homework, it's a three house system and you're worried about what their civil service get up to - much like I worry about what ours get up to. And in fact the main democratic body, the parliament, is elected by PR - which wouldn't lead to 292,316 votes buying 10 seats for the DUP and 525,371 votes buying 1 seat for the Greens, for example.

Your optimistic financial ideas made me snigger but I'm not going to bother replying to them, it's too late, I'm tired. One point though - I think foreign ownership matters if their profit sheets get translated back out of devalued pounds after we make that car!

We have a few tiny (but awesome) actual home grown car companies left that nobody's going to be discussing a lease deal for on here, and a small hub of world leading motorsport engineering firms - who are actually behind a large bulk of what goes on in F1. Those efficient, productive plants you're on about were built by the Japanese (and later a few other nationalities) after they learned how to do it properly, killing off our own motor industry as a result. We're good at innovation, but production is best left to the Germans, every single one of whom, I heard on the radio this morning, make £1.36 of GDP for every £1 we do. So go lease this well built German car  Or not, they can afford it.

For those buying, the Garmin map pilot system is essentially installed on an SD card and put into a slot the dashboard or glove compartment. Do not buy them off the dealer you can easily find the SD cards on E-Bay for around £50 as opposed to £500.

From personally using both Mercedes own Command sat nav on my A45 and the Garmin version on my current company car A-class i would say the Command one poos all over it, has saved me countless hours of time in commutes to work with accurate traffic info and is also really responsive. Whereas the the Garmin one reports 10 mile tail backs that are not even there and crashes to a black screen all the time so i have to reboot the entertainment system to get it to work. Yes command is a £1000 plus option, but in my opinion if you travel a lot is a worthwhile option.

Not sure about yours but my A200 last year was driving towards the motorway and on the phone (loud speaker) speaking to misses while driving in cruise approaching roundabout. Little did I realise cars in front all stopped around 200 yards ahead. Beeping Sensor and flashing dasboard kind of saved me driving 60 into a stationary car. So it has its uses but also how old the system is, adaptive only slows down upto 15 mph on some varients and does not do a full stop. Still useful on the motorway

I am waiting for the face lift C-Class which is coming very soon, gets rid of the stupid 'iPad bolted to the dash' screen and integrates it with a digital dash like on the S Class with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support which even cheap cars have now. Also it will have LED headlights as standard and there will likely also be more safety features as standard.

Looks aside, the 16 inch wheels is an advantage; cheaper tyres and a much more compliant ride. I'm glad the trend for massive wheels and ultra low profile tyres seems to have gone. I'm seeing more and more new premium cars with a decent amount of sidewall on their tyres.

Nope, no Apple Car Play in the C-Class, no option to add it at present either. This was the first of the models with the new interior and infotainment (below S-Class) and is soon due for a facelift and hopefully infotainment upgrade alongside it. No Andriod equivalent in it either btw

EDIT: It seems as of April they now offer a £295 + VAT option to add Apple CarPlay and Andoid Auto, on the A20 CD option only, so you can't have COMAND alongside the CarPlay which is frankly daft.

MEPs may be elected but they have no legislative powers, just an undemocratic, rubber stamping, role. When I vote for an MP I'm choosing to vote for the policies in their manifesto, not for unpublished policies dreamt up by unelected bureaucrats. We build cars in the UK very successfully and have some of the most efficient plants in the world. It doesn't really matter who owns them, they provide employment and contribute to our economy. IF we're not granted a free trade deal with the EU, the revenue generated from tariffs (not to mention the billions of EU membership fees we'd save) can be used to subsidise whatever industries we like to ensure their competitiveness. EU manufacturers would not have that luxury (in fact not allowed to by the EU) but could choose to build cars here too if they want to remain competitive in our market. The price of everything we buy from outside the EU is artificially inflated by their anti-competitive, protectionist, trade policies so it's swings and roundabouts really.

EDIT: By the way, it's a good deal if you like Mercedes cars

"Elected by all" - like elected by 28 countries? I don't think this can be considered democratic for UK citizens voting for a handful of European MPs.

They did not start making cars they bought existing manufacturing capacity to meet UK demand and export to other EU countries. Also UK had some really good car brands worth taking over. And they will continue to manufacture to meet local demand especially when cars from EU become more expensive.

Being net importer with EU actually puts us in a better position because we can address our negative trade deficit and shift production to UK. Yes, devaluing the currency will make everything more expensive but will also contribute to exports limiting trade deficit and can be a good thing for UK manufacturing in the long run.

The fact of the matter is EU has free trade agreements with multiple countries and UK has all EU regulations already in place. So it makes total economic sense to cooperate. But EU is not an economic project - its a political one. It is an emerging state which is just afraid to say how it is. That is why they are so hell-bent on imposing free movement on everyone.

We can elect MEP's we don't elect the commission who decide upon the legislation. There is nothing democratic about the EU. Malta has a larger proportional representation than we do.

Depends who you ask I guess, I've heard some people say it was to "get rid of immigrants" which is hilarious since immigration will eventually go up (long story, but trust me).

There are plenty of car manufacturers that sell their products here for cheaper than their European counterparts already, it's called the free market. Would you like me to write that on the side of the bus for you as well.

Tax on cars doesn't go towards roads. It's not called road tax. It's a tax on the emissions, hence why more economic cars are cheaper to tax.

We've been governed by an unelected PM for the last year and are about to be governed by a party that couldn't win a majority vote for the next few years too.
RUGAAL
5 Jul 17 #39
Be aware, you'll be on 145 a year road tax. Pre-April it would of been less if I recall. My previous car was e220d, pre April was 20 quid tax, now 450 on same car since new premium tax fcks everyone over who's car is more than 40k rrp
Diveboy to RUGAAL
5 Jul 17 1 #40
Have you seen the state of the roads. I don't mind the new tax changes as long as it goes to where what it's being charged for. If you pay over 40k for a car you've overstretched if you can't afford £450 a year.

IPT is what you should be angry about.
Awaken
5 Jul 17 2 #38
What's undemocratic about an elected by all parliament and a civil service carrying out their policies? Doesn't always do what you want, but hell, I never voted tory.

We don't sell any cars, our motor industry died out in the 80s-90s. Several foreign car firms started making cars here in order to avoid EU tariffs on imports. The only reason they'll stay if we leave the common market is if we pay them to make cars, to avoid the bad PR and whiney newly unemployed types needing welfare and adult education to reskill.

Edit: The EU is as democratic as our own government, if you didn't vote for your MEP then quit moaning. And google something like "Nissan brexit bribe" for more on paying them to stay - it's already started.

2nd edit: And one more thing - we're a net importer with the EU, by quite some margin, so devaluing our currency will just make everything we buy in (like those car parts!) even more expensive and cost us significantly more overall.

It obviously is a difficult concept to understand because you've conveniently ignored exchange rates, we can devalue they can't, so our cars will be no more expensive in Europe than they are now but theirs will (10% currency plus 10% duty). It's also the way we trade with every other country outside the EU and it doesn't stop us selling cars there. But if you want to be governed by a totally undemocratic, unelected, elite then, hey ho, off you go.

Did you drive it rough or gentle? My E-Class I used to drive like a saint, but c63 kicked its head in. The 7g feels so much better or a petrol, but still 9 gears! Seems to many for my liking lol
fishmaster
4 Jul 17 #29
I did look it up and here's the forum where some one made a video showing how ineffective it was at braking for stationary objects >

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/140324-Adaptive-Cruise-Control-and-Stationary-Vehicles
OrribleHarry
4 Jul 17 #28
Is actually a bosch system that's fitted by many manufacturers. I've had the system on an Insignia an XF and a BMW all detected stationary objects, maybe early version?
fishmaster
4 Jul 17 #27
I believe the system was first used on Mercedes, and they will have developed/evolved the system better than the VW system. I don't know about the most recent Audi's or the Golf MK 7.5 (I have a MK 7) but mine would crash in to something stationary without warning.
benjai
4 Jul 17 #26
For this particular deal, assuming you stick with the pcp, in terms of value, is it best to return the car after 3 yrs or pay off the balance and keep it?
indianajon
4 Jul 17 2 #19
Mercedes getting desperate already? Just wait 'til the prospect of 10% duty kicks in, will be putting Meerkat under pressure to do us a good deal then.
SpamJavelin to indianajon
4 Jul 17 6 #25
So what cars will we be able to buy that won't be affected by a 10% duty? Ones made here will still be subject to tariffs on car parts and any 'our' manufacturers export will be subject to the same tax.

I understand it's a difficult concept to understand, perhaps if I wrote it in big letters on the side of a bus it would be easier for you?
OrribleHarry
4 Jul 17 1 #24
I tested mine with a road cone to see if it would brake, it beeped and then a second later slammed on the anchors worked really well, it actually hit the road cone but only tapped it.
fishmaster
4 Jul 17 #23
Same for me, the car will just beep and say ffs there's something in front of you will you just stop now or else?! Also I could quite easily ram it up the backside of a stationary vehicle at 60mph if I wanted, it wouldn't alert me to the fact there's a car or brick wall up ahead. Anyway I still find it a very useful system, but as usual anything with computers in it you can't trust it.
OrribleHarry
4 Jul 17 #22
Perhaps I should have said. My auto will come to a complete stop if necessary whereas a manual disengages the cruise once vehicle slows beyond current gear speed.
fedex1401
4 Jul 17 1 #21
An auto is preferable on any Mercedes from C-class upwards if you want to move it on when the time comes. :man:
fishmaster
4 Jul 17 1 #20
I agree it's better on an auto as the car will change gear for you. However I have it on my Golf which is a manual and I find it very useful so it's far from useless. The system on my Golf won't detect stationary vehicles in front of you, I don't know if the systems are better on other cars, it's far from perfect but definitely makes driving long distance a lot more comfortable.

I remember the days of 4 gears lol
OrribleHarry to Toon_army
4 Jul 17 #14
I took one out it's a big improvement over the 7g especially when changing down on a steep incline much smoother.

The adaptive cruise control is useless on a manual so definitely need an auto with this option.
