OS Locate is far better, and has always been free. It provides a compass, plus it calculates your grid reference and displayed it as a local map reference. An excellent app and highly recommended.

Hopefully it should go without saying, but anyone planning a route through unknown isolated backcountry, climbing mountains etc. relying on a phone app rather than a physical compass and map is asking for candidacy in the Darwin Awards.

Thanks for the tip but I'll try this Compass PRO first - also free, no ads, no in app purchases and the clincher for me - requires no permissions at install - just does what it says on the tin.

Sorry if i am being stupid. When you download stuff from the store, you have to sign into Google. If i download this on my current phone, would it be available on a future phone for free? Using the same Google account?
