Open to all to review the logic and comment…………

I am leaving my current company where I have had a company car for 3 years and weighing up the most economical approach to commuting here on forth. Personally, not too fussed about brand new cars and just trying to find the best option.

I have done the maths as can be seen below and I believe it to be a better option to buy and sell a car after using it for 2 years by circa £3,000.00.

Option 1: A Lease Deal worked out as follows:
\x09 (Total Cost - £8639.38 over 2 years)
Deposit - £682.34
Monthly Hire - £228*23 = £5224 (23 as first month is the deposit cost)
Admission/ Processing fee - £360.00
Insurance - £800.00 * 2years = £1,600.00
Service - £150 * 3 services = £450.00
Tyres replacement - £100 a tyre = £400.00

Option 2: Buying and Selling a car after 2 years worked out as follows:
\x09 (Total Cost - £10,450.00 – 5,600.00 = £5,350.00 over 2 years)
Car - £8,000.00 (based on various cars inc. 2010+ bmw 1series, bmw 320, c class etc: under 60K mileage)
Insurance - £800.00 * 2years = £1,600.00
Service - £150 * 3 services = £450.00
Tyres replacement - £100 a tyre = £400.00
Contingency/Repairs - £500.00
Value of car after 2 years - £8000.00 *.70 = £5600.00 (based on 15% depreciation per year)

There's absolutely no doubting the value of this deal, and leasing in general. However I can't help but think that these deals encourage people to live beyond their means. I read recently that the average personal debt in the UK is around the 10,000 mark. Social media is, let's face it, 90% boasting (look what i've bought, where i've been or what i've done) and this ultimately encourages people to live beyond their means. Not to mention that these manufacturers are losing their exclusivity - I could walk to work on the roofs of leased Audi A1s. Ironically i think if you take the risk of repair costs and buy a future classic you will end up with a far cooler and more exclusive car than any of the new models.

Anyway depressing chat over - voted hot haha

Unless I'm missing something or my maths is bad (which might be true)

Audi A6 2.0 TDI Ultra SE Executive. 2yrs £800 initial, £267 per month (both incl VAT). 10k miles p/a @ Blue chilli cars £7,300.00 is the thread offer?

The offer from LC:

Total Cost: £759.60 + £299 + (23*£253.20) = £6,882.2
Monthly Cost Over 24M: £6,882.2

28 Jul 17 #65
Just to add, my only gripe about the deal is that like someone said above, you only get the basic bog standard model. I'm happy with that as it is only a 24 month deal but if you want a car that is exciting and has all the gadgets, you will need to pay a lot more. When you add on all of the bits to customise the car, the deal no longer looks a good one!

I did consider the A4 Black Edition and this would have come with a lot more features and would probably have been only a little more than the STronic.

If you take the A6 for a test drive, bear in mind, the test drive model will either be an SLine edition or a Black Edition and not the standard model on offer.

I spent around 2 weeks looking for the best A6 deal and also spoke to the guys at Blue Chilli who where quite helpful. But sorry to say, this offer is not the best deal out there.

In the end I found a much better deal with Lease Comparison which I have now ordered and expect delivery in September.

For those that are interested, this is the two options that I was quoted by LC and I went for the STronic offer:

Audi A6 Diesel Saloon2.0 TDI Ultra SE Executive 4dr
Term: 24 Months
Mileage: 10,000
Monthly Rental Incl Vat: £253.20
Initial Rental: 3 Months @ £759.60 (Incl VAT)
Admin Fee: £299 (no vat)

Total Cost: £759.60 + £299 + (23*£253.20) = £6,882.2
Monthly Cost Over 24M: £6,882.2 / 24 = £286.75

Audi A6 Diesel Saloon2.0 TDI Ultra SE Executive 4dr S Tronic
Term: 24 Months
Mileage: 10,000
Monthly Rental Incl Vat: £269.84
Initial Rental: 3 Months @ £809.53 (Incl VAT)
Admin Fee: £299 (no vat)

Total Cost: £809.53 + £299 + (23*£269.84) = £7,314.85
Monthly Cost Over 24M: £7,314.85 / 24 = £304.76

So for £14.85 more, you could go with Lease Comparison and get the STronic or you could go with the standard SE and save £417.8 which will probably pay for 1 of the services that it will be due during the 24 months!

I tried posting this deal but HUKD wouldn't allow it but I can confirm that I have ordered it, paid the deposit and everything has been confirmed.

P.S for those who are discussing the Pro's and Con's of a lease deal, my reasoning was this:

I run my own business, it's fairly new and doing OK. I don't have much cash to buy a new car and the one I have has been run to the ground and on its last legs. Even if I had the cash, it would make more sense for me to put the money into my business and make a return off that money, than buy a car outright for 20-30k. I guess everyone has their own reasons and that is mine.

As I said - if you want a specific model, you'll almost always find a "better" used deal.

Bargain leases are only bargains if you're happy with what the car is. This is great value for money for a not unreasonable specification.

I replied to cactusbrandy earlier but it seems that the post didn't go through.

One of the points I made to him that although he/she says not to compare brand new to an used vehicle, I cannot see how spending £520 amortised per month for the new facelift model with the same specs is much greater than the £215 I'm currently paying. That is more than twice the monthly payments!

Yes I know that you can find better lease deals than pay £520 on a Mini but even so, I'm pretty satisfied with what I got. A top end Mini Countryman instead of a brand new 1.2 Citroen Cactus for roughly around the same monthly payments.

There's always that element of risk when buying an used car. I've had a 2005 Mini hatch for a number of years before upgrading to its bigger brother and had no issues with it apart from just having to replace its wearable items - these items have been recently changed on my current Mini.

At the risk of labouring a point, I think it is fair to say the new vs used argument comes with a number of flaws

27 Jul 17 #58
At what cost? A lot of the items that fail are due to wear and tear after five years.

Read the small print on pretty much all extended warranties - they are usually limited in the amount you can claim if something goes wrong.
ja0101

Because I have an option of extending my 2 year warranty until the end of my PCP agreement.
m5rcc
27 Jul 17 #55
Why would you buy to own a second-hand diesel that is outside warranty? Good luck replacing all those emissions equipment!
cactusbrandy
27 Jul 17 #54
I make that £7760 for three years; going to assume you're not going to buy it with balloon payment (not sure what it is, but imagine more than £3240 balance to £11k used price).

That's £215.55 per month amortised. Not sure what mileage you have in there, but let's be optimistic and assume 10k quoted miles.

By the time you're done in 2020, that car will be 7 years old. If it works for you, go for it! It certainly doesn't feel as good a deal to me, however. But that's not a problem - we all have different requirements

£215 a month amortised will absoultely get you more than a 1.2 hatchback on a lease deal. Maybe not to the same spec of the Mini, but you really can't compare used and new in this regard.

But you have to be flexible to get the best lease deals - if you are dead-set on a specific car and model, you are likely going to be disappointed, as the deals come as and when - and are rarely what you expect and when you want them.

I missed the S5 and Golf R deals many times, as I was mid-contract. My bad luck. But got a Leon FR 184 for £221 a month amortised a couple of years back, so it's not all bad news.

Before I got my new car a few months ago, I've been researching the different options of leasing a new a car to finance an used car through PCP/HP - buying outright wasn't an option for me as it would've meant buying a 10+ year old car.

It's been fun reading the comments on all the lease deals posted on this site as I can see why people recommend it or despise it.

I've ended up getting a Mini Countryman SD 2.0l diesel 63 reg with JCW styling which just looks amazing. 39k mileage and a dealership price of £11k including 2 years warranty. I'm now paying £160 on a PCP for 3 years after putting a £2k downpayment.

The new Countyman model with the same specs would have cost £450 pm + £3k on a 6+35 lease.

From my view, there is a huge difference on price between leasing to financing a 3/4 year old car. Yes, when getting a 3 year old car it will most likely need new sets of tyres, brake pads/discs but even this still outweigh the costs of leasing a new car.

The price that I'm paying for my PCP, this will only get me a 1.2 hatchback on a brand new lease deal.

And how much more do those sheds cost to buy in the first place, compared to their budget counterparts? I'm guessing at least £2k. In fact we don't have to guess, let's look at an 09 1 series and an 09 Fiat Bravo. Would you look at that! How about a 3 series and an IS250? Wow, even worse, and the Lexus is a premium brand too!

And then there's the cost of maintaining it in that time... I'll continue laughing out of my face, thank you!

Then I have an easy solution for you:

Don't!

Given enough time, the Oxford English dictionary could have an entry for HUKD:

"HUKD - adj - used for describing the situation when people who cannot grasp finances, preference and direct comparison, wade in on a lease deal thread and get it entirely wrong and enforce their biased and misinformed opinion on everyone else until the thread dies a horrible death."

"Oh, did you see that thread that got all HUKD up?"

The missus 09 civic... nice car... again £1200 and wants for nothing. Chain, so no cambelt

The avensis, 60k cambelt (£250 at a DEALER), for another 3 years trouble free motoring.

Full leather, aircon ,sat nav, huge boot, bodywork rust free.

Thought I would share my experience of leasing and second hand car ownership as i've done both recently.

First Lease - Peugeot 208 GTI @ £168 on a 1+17 deal. absolutely brilliant little car for a outragously cheap price that i will never see as cheap again. Loved steady monthly payments and not worrying about breakdowns / repair costs, haggled come service time and got it 20% cheaper. the only negative in my mind about leasing is damage by other people risk, but the flip side of this is if you owned outright a car that nice you would be wanting to repair any scrapes anyhow. The handover went completely fine and i paid no damages.

I then bought a used Clio RS200 as good lease deals went dead for a while and TBH i thought i could still use a hothatch motor cheaply for a little while, WRONG !!!! i bought the car with FSH and it recently had £2k spent on a refurb gearbox and new clutch plus cambelt etc. Great i thought, less for me to worry about and shows its been looked after. I then spent £2.5k myself on engine problems, new brakes, new tyres, new suspension hub bearings and springs ! in total i spend £2.5k to own a second hand car for 2 months use and less than 2,000 miles, this caused massive headaches in our household with both me and my partner having to use her car for work whilst the clio was off the road, i got rid ASAP.

I then bought a used civic from a honda stealership, to be fair i still have this and its a solid car with full honda history. but even this i had to repair the radio screen dead pixels as not covered under warranty and the A/C faile shortly afterwards and again not under warranty T&C's. i worked it out and the civic will cost be £100pm over the next 2 years in depressiation, tax, MOT's, servicing and wear and tear repais such as tyres and brakes

I've gone back to leasing and got a SEAT leon cupra 300 coming october, £250 deposit and £250 pm for 2 years, i also invested in a THINKWARE 2ch dash cam that had parking mode to hopefully catch anyone should they prang it.

As mentioned by someone else, depreciation could be a lot higher than you predicted.

Couple of other things I noticed:
1) Insurance - usually cheaper on a new vehicle. This was the case for me comparing quotes on a new car vs a used car.

2) Contingency/repairs - £500 is VERY optimistic for a 6+ year old car. I would suspect your repair costs would be a more than £500 for a car of that age. Around the 60k mileage mark a lot of things begin to need replacing from what I was told when looking around. Also the cars you are considering BMW Mercedes have a lot higher repair and maintenance costs.

For information, this will likely only need one service in the two years you lease it - the 2.0 TDI has an ~18k long-life service option, so if you can get a deal at an Audi garage, it can be cheaper to do the service yourself, than with the monthly optional maintenance package.

Problem is Audi's first service - it's eye-watering and PCH stipulates Audi approved dealers only in almost every example. Considering they pretty much only change the oil and oil filter, you might be alarmed at their charges!
thrustmaster
25 Jul 17 #34
Problem being that you are comparing new for old to suit your scenario. This will be all down to personal preference and I am happy with leasing/PCP as I don't have to worry so much about unexpected costs and end up with a nicer car for a couple of years (I don't have kids and generally take care of my vehicles).

Opinions shouldn't conflict though, if people weren't buying used cars I imagine it would be a lot more difficult to get reasonably priced PCP/lease deals and likewise I don't imagine there would be quite as many low mileage used cars on the market for people to snap up if PCP/Lease deals were to become unpopular.

Oh dear me. You seem rather concerned about your "image". Why not contribute that money towards a good education for your kids, or pay the mortgage off early for your beautiful wife, so you can spend some time together lovingly rather than worry about what you look like at the school gates. You're probably judging everyone else by your own standards too... driving around as if you're the bees knees. Buy a tip top car when you can afford one!

Lots of different opinions here, and rightly so. There is no one best way of acquiring a car. Personally I have used PCP leasing for my last 3 cars because I always have a nearly new car on my driveway. Mainly because my wife and children can be seen in a new/newish car. Without PCP I would have to acquire a car that is at least 3 years old (possibly ex-lease company car with high mileage). The total cost would be similar once I take into account things like having to pay road tax, new tyres, repairs, MOT, etc. No doubt I could save money by buying something older and running it into the ground; however, with a beautiful wife and children, I want them to have the best I can afford. The way I look at it, in monetary term, etc., is that if I choose PCP then my family can have the use of a new car every few years. Otherwise, they have to be seen in an old banger. Pulling up outside of the school gate to let my children out of the car/pick them up does have a bearing on my choice. Given that you can get virtually any model of car on PCP, I will not being going for this deal on the basis that it is not a car that I would like to have as the main family car. With so many modern 'crossovers' available today, This AUDI looks very dated.

I think you are right. I suspect this will end in tears one day, but at the moment manufactured goods are plentiful (and therefore cheap) and at the same time money is very cheap (an effect of quantitative easing) - so people can consume lots (and they do). Will in end? Of course it will, maybe in a year or perhaps 10 years, but the credit bubble will burst and people will be looking for someone else to blame. Ho hum.
asingh91
25 Jul 17 #25

Good point. The depreciation was sort of a best guess but i hadnt taken that into account.

Im aware that the fix is not compulsory however with VAG sending out letters on DVSA headed paper its understandable why some people might have thought otherwise . There have even been instances of dealers applying the fix without consent and in some cases despite owners saying they didn't want it .

As for dealers warning off carrying out the fix , dealers are supposed to carry out a diagnostic on the car before the fix is applied to ensure that there are no pre existing issues with the emissions management system or the injectors . But if this diagnostic does not show any issues the dealer will apply the fix .

Of course not all dealers are what you would consider sensible either .

Of course initially people would not have been aware that their experience was not unique in the reporting of the issues either , as time goes on and more owners face issues it is likely that the profile of the issues will raise .

OK constructive comments on your two options. I think it is fair to say that buying and running an old-ish car will probably be cheaper than leasing a new high end car. However, I think your number are over estimating the difference:

Financials basics:
- Your cost assume that you have £10.5K cash to put on the car. If you have to borrow, you will be paying interests.
- Service cost for old car are likely to be higher even only in basic wear and tear items (not including contingency). You make have to replace brake pads, disks, timing belts, filters, etc. Whoever sold the 7y.o. likely sold it before some major service items were due.
- New car might not need new tyres within 2 years (depending how you drive), second hand is likely to have already half worn tyres that will need replacing.

Financial risks:
- Your £500 contingency could well be a huge amount more. I drive an 8 y.o. car and in recent years, I've had to replace parts of the suspension, air con leak, cooling leak and this has cost me more than £500 a year in average but in my case, I still like the car, I know its history and it is fully paid. Maybe I am just incredibly unlucky but I tend to look with skepticism with these peoples that claim they run 10+ y.o. cars and never have any significant repair cost.

Safety and reliability:
- An older car will be likely less reliable than a newer one. If you can afford some time with the car being off road, then you are OK. But if you depend on the car working reliably every day then this could be a problem. What is the value/cost to you of a day off work required to fix a basic fault (say £50 cost for a simple electrical fault or water leak)?

Subjective value:
- You are comparing apples and oranges. A brand new car and a 7 year old second hand will feel very different. In a subjective way, the new lease one will feel better, drive better, less squeaks, look better. What value this have is very arguable.

Overall, buying an old second hand should be cheaper than leasing unless you are very unlucky. But you also get something less nice, higher risk and could get hassle.

Another deal a teenager, who's just got his job will see and think..

I've personally witnessed dozens of examples of the above with students.

Please be vary of family/friends/relatives that are getting themselves into debts at such a young age. An age they finally have to enjoy themselves before this thing called 'debt' takes over their lives until they turn 70 with mortgages etc.

It could be better to buy the car outright for cash , keep it for 2 years and sell .

But are you prepared to take the risk that the car wont depreciate more than expected ?

What would have happened say you bought a brand new Golf TDI just before the emissions scandal broke ? you might be looking at depreciation well beyond what expected . Especially now that it is becoming apparent that the fix that VW have implemented is causing more issues .

A safety recall or instances of company actions that could increase depreciation are completely unpredictable .

Everyone is different. I can't keep a car that long as I get bored easily. Also you are then out of the warranty and could potentially start seeing additional costs. I bought my A6 cash at 2 years old and sold it at 3.5 years old and I still lost 5k in 18 months. It had already lost 10k at the point when I bought it. Now I lease a Golf R which will cost me 6.5k over two years and I don't even need to tax it. So it's not such a bad feeling for me paying this as I know I would have lost a lot more if I had bought it from new myself. As said everyone has their preference.

so you're the one that goes from table to table at the pub drinking the left overs. Good things we're not allowed to smoke in pubs nowadays, on the olden days, you'd swallow cigarette's stubs at the same time :-)

This is a good deal, unfortunately for me buying a 3 year used always ends up better value as I do 15k miles per annum, always get tempted though when these deals come up! Thanks OP.

Any higher mileage leasers around that have made it work?

They come as standard, but it costs extra to be taught how &a when to use them

I thought that too. Also, leasing includes road tax and you can often get away without having a service or new tyres on a 2yr lease.

Have a look on AutoTrader, even 2002/2003 sheds go for £2000. This is well known compared to Renault, Fiat, Vauxhall etc. - laugh all you want.
