If you're currently looking for a decently specified well reviewed upper end budget tablet. This may fit the bill.
Pros
- Bright 2K IPS Screen (2048 x 1536 pixels)
- 32GB Memory
- Micro SD slot
- Thin part metal design (6.6 mm thick)
- Lightweight (317g)
- Fast AC WiFi
- Good front facing stereo speakers
- John Lewis 2 Year Warranty
Cons
- Poor Battery Life (6 - 8 Hours)
- Underwhelming Processor (Intel Atom Z3530 Quad-Core 1.33 GHz)
- Barely Adequate 2GB RAM
- Android 6 marshmallow only (may never get Android 7 Nougat).
- Normal rubbish tablet cameras. (5MP rear, 2MP front)
- Custom ZenUI skin. (Put your favorite launcher on ASAP)
- Bloatware galore

Apart from grey market Chinese imports, I'm not sure there is a better budget tablet at this price? If there is, can you let me know below, because I'm currently looking to buy.

Hughes have the 16GB version currently on sale for £20 less.

One word of warning, most of the reviews online are for the Z580CA which has a faster processor.

Not voting either way (I'm still wedded to my Nexus 7 2013), but appreciate the pros and cons in the post above the usual copy/paste spec sheet. Thanks!

It has some excellent features of a £300 tablet (2K IPS, 32GB, design), but to get it down to a lower price point they seem to have skimped on RAM, Battery and Processor. You pays your money you takes your choice. I'm just trying to help people make an informed choice.

As I asked in the original post, does anyone know of a better current UK tablet model for this type of money, 'cos I'm looking to buy.

Clearly a person that has found a good price, but not sure if ready to lay money down on this product!

It looks to be a safe choice in a field of poor tablets at this price bracket. I'm currently waiting on an Ifive Mini 4s from Gearbest, which was £79. Similar specs, though I have not done a search to compare processors.

Yep, as Cooltide said above it's good for the price bracket, but still not quite perfect. It also doesn't come with a quick charger despite supposedly supporting Quick charge 3.0, which seems a bit cheap of them considering it's a £300 tablet.
It might be worth keeping an eye out for the Lenovo Tab 4 Plus range.

Thank for the reply cooltide Iv always been a android guy untill my s5 broke and I decides to bet a iPhone 6 for £100 off a friend, it's almost been a 6 months now and the battery is now terrible and my from screen off, so I was debating on getting the Asus or the galaxy s8 (so expensive though )

I've recommended and bought this tablet for a friend and spent a couple of hours with it. It's full metal, slim, light with a fab ips screen and sound. I've not seen it with nougat upgrade, but I didn't like the marshmallow zenui skin, and there was a load of Bloaty McBloatware.
Although the IPS screen is nicer than anything else that we looked at on sub £300 tablets, it's not a patch on the amoled screen on my moto z phone. Plus even though the mediatec chip had more cores and a higher clock speed and is fast enough, it all feels a bit slower than my phone with it's snapdagon 820. Maybe the current nougat update will fix that. The fingerprint scanner is not nearly as responsive as the scanner on my phone.
In summary, it's very good, but I'd have liked just a bit more. But you'll probably need to spend £500 on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 to get it.

Asus seem to be upping their game with Nougat updates recently... Have the Z500M and that finally got updated the other day, so never give up hope!

Would you say this tablet is worth £270 at John Lewis?

7 Jul 17 1 #25
That's disappoint to read the comments about it, as I would like a decent 8.0 android to replace my hudl 2 - and don't really want a samsung (don't like the bloatware). Any other suggestions welcome

I’ll say it might be ok
seems like ASUS is going to release nougat soon.

In the same situation. Probably going to end up with a fire but it's a step down which is annoying 2 years on

I guess there just isn't the supply and demand in the Android tablet market right now to be able to shift devices with a siMilar spec and price point to - say - a Xiaomi Redmi.

It's a curious device this - I felt like the hardware can't power the screen more than anything. It never really struggled for me with and resource intensive app, rather the redrawing of the high res display just seems a bit laggy at all times.

This is a very old tablet. Releases in 2015. I bought it last year for similar price from currys. never used it much. as suggested it's painfully slow.

I've got a 5 year old lenovo that has similar specs and cost less than £100 at the time.
I only mention this because I'm surprised technology hasn't moved a great deal on these budget devices I would have thought octo-core and a decent camera would be normal for this price range by now.

I totally agree, that's why the Nexus 7 2013 is refusing to die for many people. I can't understand why no budget manufacturer hasn't gone with a Snapdragon 800 instead of Intel/Mediatek CPU's. The SD was a beast in its day, and with 3GB of RAM, could still outpace most of the budget competition.

Bought 2 of these from Currys before Christmas at £135, which was an absolute bargain. They were new, and not Grade A.

Both developed screen faults and were sent off for RMA with ASUS 5 times in all, but kept coming back with problems. Ended up getting a refund.

have this tablet

i find the battery life very good and the Zen so-called bloatware is not so bad - so useful featres / apps

It is not the fastest tablet but also no slouch ......

screen is great and nice size / format

Sorry if I'm being stupid but does Grade A mean the condition? I.e. it is second hand but in good condition?
Thanks!

If your going down the CeX route, pay a consider paying a touch more for the Galaxy Tab S2 8". The screen is much better and its so light you can use it for ages without your wrist getting tired at all. The only downside is the small battery and plastic back, both to keep the weight down. I paid £190 for a grade B and its mint.
elitom
5 Jul 17 2 #16
Grade A will be like new ..... with full retail packaging and in very very close to perfect condition

if there are any scratches etc then CEX will grade as Grade B for sure

also CEX offer 2 years warranty - just read the T&Cs

Yes. Grade A usually means it's not new. Either second hand, or opened and returned. Grade A should mean it's almost like a new one. Maybe some very very small scratches etc but should otherwise be perfect.

A very disappointing tablet. Aesthetically and screen quality wise it promises a lot, but it's so so slow. Even the lock screen or waiting for the screen to rotate takes an age. Eventually the tablet will wear you down and have you longing for the Nexus 7 you gave away too hastily. It's cheap for a reason; because it's a paperweight

Noted that mine has good battery when being used but standby seems to only be around a day. Not sure why as not looked into it.

Screen and general use are good, but the CPU struggles to power the screen I find. The tablet doesn't seem to slow much under demand but does generally lag a little when moving between screens etc.

Generally ok - I did pay this price a year ago however.

I actually have my eye on the ASUS Z380M 8" 16 GB. Similar spec to 580 at currys for £99.
Scott666 to TheBishDude
4 Jul 17 #10
Went to Currys to look at that the other day but it's a right brick. Pretty tempted by this I must say (after breaking my trusty ASUS memo pad me572c the other day) and I also wouldn't mind getting the audio cover accessory but can't seem to find any for sale in the UK...Other than that I was looking at the Xiaomi Mi Pad 3 from Gearbest but don't really like the champagne gold colour. Decisions, decisions....

Got this at chrimbo from currys from the mrs. Was actually wanting the nvidia shield. Screens lovely. Tad buggy. Tried to disable as much of the asus bloat but still hangs on occations. If your looking to root and rom good luck..can't find any roms. Shame as it seem held back by the software rather than the hardware.
