I've got one of these, don't expect the world. Playing back video is fine I guess, but as soon as you install the Google Play store and start putting apps on it that kind of weren't supposed to go on it, you;ll see it struggle.
Using Chrome is horrible, bluetooth audio drops out for a split second on Netflix (does on my iPhone 7 though to be fair), wifi drops all the time 1 floor up so music from Amazon Music stops (it doesn't have the intelligence to perhaps buffer the whole album I've started listening to), games are sluggish. No Nest, Marvel Comics, Dominos, it's all the little things you take for granted when using a proper tablet

Basic tablet, annoying with the Amazon OS the apps are limited (uses Amazon underground app store rather than the usual Android App store). And even the apps you can get like BBC iplayer don't allow all features you would normally get like off line viewing/downloads.
However for a cheap tablet for kids I'm voting hot. Again you might want to check what kids apps you can get on it. I couldn't get the furby app to connect to my kids furby toy.
And if you can be bothered these can be rooted and you can put the normal Android OS on instead.

I have abysmal handwriting, and am starting my masters course in a few months. How would a cheap thing like this be for just simple word processing? And would that then be transferrable easily to a normal windows laptop? Would save me taking a laptop into London on the tube four nights a week. Or any recommendations for something cheap?

Typing on such a small screen for any decent amount of text will be torture. Best bet would be to hold out for a bargain chromebook with prime day on the way.

I think it will have/get Alexa -got this info from Amazon recently-
Alexa now on Fire tablets
We’re happy to share that Alexa is now available on all 4th-generation and newer Fire tablets. Voice responses from Alexa are enhanced with visuals for music, Audible, weather, shopping, Flash Briefings, sports scores, timers and more.
Visit the help page for more information on how to enable and use Alexa on Fire tablets, then just press the Home button and ask.

Mine arrived today, but I'm disappointed with it.
I don't like Amazon's ego system or the huge black border around the main display area.
It's an older version of the Fire table and doesn't appear to be reconditioned. I think Amazon are simply selling off old stock at half price.
I've arranged to send mine back. I chose the 'not as described' option rather than 'change of mind' one so that I can return it free. The description mentions lots of its features are "new", but also includes this text "There is a newer version of this item". I think the description is poor.

I got two of these a couple of years ago. Just be aware that after the Fire OS system files you aren't left with a lot of room for apps. I wiped mine and installed the SlimLP build of Cyanogenmod, which clawed back a little space. Works fine as a streaming device for the kids, but you won't get many games on it.

whilst you can no longer root and put android on this you can still take the whole 3 mins and install and use the playstore, even a launcher to make it feel like proper android and it will feel snappier to.

Yes, it was sensible to wait a couple of weeks until Prime Day. I have just bought the latest version, complete with 16 gig of ram and Alexa for only £19.99 (normally £59.99). £20 off for Prime Day plus another £20 off for taking out their credit card. This will also give me about 2 months before I have to pay for it. Everything comes to those who wait! If I had simply settled for the 8 gig version it would only have been £9.99.

If you like Alexa, better off buying the new version (Alexa built in) for £50 - I know, twice the price but with Alexa it is twice the fun
