Volkswagen Golf Estate 2.0 TSI 310ps R DSG 4Motion MK7.5

This is the facelift model. There are other terms available and excess mileage is 8.4p / mile - you can usually get a better quote by calling up midway through your lease to increase the mileage (but don't rely on this too much as it's not guaranteed).

£1,987.20 initial payment and £220.80 (Inc VAT) per month for the remaining 23 months (9 + 23). Smaller initial payments are available at a slightly increased total cost over term.

It's also available with an 8,000 miles p/a allowance at £1,933.20 initial payment and £214.80 (Inc VAT) per month for the remaining 23 months (9 + 23) - this saves £192 over the term for low mileage users.

Incredible deal. No doubt there will be the usual plethora of face palm inducing "special members" who still fail miserably to grasp the concept of the value in this deal....
Brace yourself for comments such as "I brought (sic) my vauxhall nova for 100 quid from a scrap dealer and it runs fine after I rebuilt the entire car, much cheaper than 7k!"

You can only ever compare a lease with buying a new car. Or possibly in some cases a nearly new car.. If you were to buy new, using conventional financing, you would lose a significant amount in depreciation when selling eafter 2,3,4 years etc. E.g a 25k car after 2 years might be worth only 15 k now, so lost 10k in depreciation. If a lease was available which cost only 7k for 2 years... the this would be a perfect example of why a lease would be better in this instance.

In order to understand the real value of a lease you need to calculate the cost of ownership for the duration of ownership. In the example above the new car would have cost you 10k for 2 years but the lease would have been 7k. In the case of the lease the car would go back, in the case of the conventional purchase (assuming PCP), the car would also go back unless paying it off, or if lucky, and the value is higher than the optional final payment amount then you will have some positive equity to put forward to another vehicle.

Simple right? :P

Remember, you can only compare leasing to buying a NEW car. You simply cannot compare it to buying a second hand car. Albeit in many circumstances, the option of purchasing the second hand car might be both, cheaper and more sensible toward your personal finances!

You are paying for the depreication of the vehicle whislt having the privilage to drive it.
Many people spend £300+ on rail fares per month, you don't get to keep the train at the end of it!
Much better to spend the money on leasing a car.... no waiting in the cold for the delayed train, no sitting next to a noisy/smelly/weird person. You can move around at your leisure, in superior comfort (even if you are stuck in traffic).

It's a no-brainer.

Sure, I know it's not returnable. Something to bear in mind though, if I'd paid 9+35, I would have lost the 9 months worth. The insurance pays off the cost of the car to the finance company. Gap is to cover the difference there.

Basically, if you pay loads you front and car gets stolen, you are very much more out of pocket.

My GAP insurance pays me back £2000 if my car is written off (i.e. stolen and not recovered).
That was something I specifically asked for as I paid a fairly large deposit initially to get the monthly payments down.

Not in VW's case. They were using a defeat device, the ECU programmed to detect test conditions and changing the settings to minimise emissions. Then when in normal driving mode they belched out much more.
Other car makers fudged the figures but didn't use any such cheat, which is why VW have the massive billion dollar fines and have to correct all the affected cars, and the other manufacturers don't.

Very good deal, but i don't think i would lease another VAG car until they start adding security / trackers etc. Plus DSG is not for me, and the lack of hand brake is a PITA.

Warning to anyone contemplating a Lease. I don't know if Gap insurance would help, but someone breaks into your house and nicks you cars (2 went), then the way it gets settled with the insurance company seems to be that the insurance deal direct with the leasing company and pay off the 'settlement' figure. This seems to mean you lose any deposit you paid, and any money during the time it takes to settle. I don't yet know what the insurance payout will be, but i could be in debit as well as losing the deposit and at least a months rental.
As there seems to be plague of VAG thefts at the moment, and given they there is no tracker on these cars (which i simply couldn't believe when i found out - from a Subaru owner, i just thought all decent spec cars had trackers as standard), then i would think very carefully. I had a Cupra 300 taken in under 2 months - i don't know how they found it and others with stolen VAG cars have said the same. I do wonder if someone has access to peoples details. I am pretty sure i was not followed as i have been wary of that before.

Has anyone else had a lease car stolen? How did the insurance settle it?

Great deal on an amazing car. We just handed our 5dr hatchback one back 2 months ago and really miss it!

However don't believe the fuel figures. We got 21 mpg over the 2 years we had it almost entirely in eco mode (although very little motorway driving in that.)

It also chews tyres. Had to replace them within the 2 years doing 10K miles per year. They were roughly £100 each.

You'll be liable for Benefit In Kind tax if you do this, and it'll probably cost you more in BIK tax than the entire cost to lease - so not worth the trouble in my opinion.

FocusST
3 Jul 17 #63
I think it depends on the car, the deposit on my PCP was low (£2k, but BMW are now doing them for £0 deposit I believe) and the monthly payments are not that high either for the car I got, certainly PCP/lease is similar on the car I bought anyway, not sure on the Golf.

No the S4 kind of replaced it deal wise and was cheaper too. I agree the price difference is certainly not to be sniffed at and would take a fair bit of thinking about. I would have had another Golf if there had been deals comparable to the old one so thought I'd pay more and have an S5
xchaotic
3 Jul 17 #55
If you have a reliable source for a 2nd hand car, then go for it, but work out how much you will be paying monthly.
If, for example it works out to £120pcm, then would you rather drive and old car that might break down and you pay for repairs or drive a new Golf R? After 5 years you have give back the Golf R and you get to keep your 8-10 years 2nd hand car, which at that point will be more of liability than an asset.
Entirely up to you, but I am unlikely to buy another car, ever

Had diesels for the last few years before this one so it is more mentally comparing the two, I do run the Golf on Shell V Power. My last petrol was an Honda Accord Type-R which I loved (210-220bhp), the Golf mpg is much better than the Accord (22mpg).

Looking at my tyre wear, I am sure the 4 motion is on most of the time (the grip is amazing) so 27 mpg is good for the type of car it is.

On the topic of tyres, the car recently had it first service (£164) @ 9.5k tyre depths all round were 5.5mm (when new was 8mm).

You'd be wise to get GAP insurance when you lease a car like this in case it does get written off

Pays back the missing value in between your insurance co's quote and the original purchase value if the car is written off. This is insurance on top of the regular car insurance.

Just over a year left on my deal :disappointed:

I would have gone for this deal if I was near the end of my current lease.

Deal I Went For (£175 per month, deposit £2400)

The pre-face lift model is just below 300bhp only downside is you will be become best friends with the staff at your local petrol station :smirk:

My long term average is 27mpg but can get up 38mpg on a sensible long run.

I needed the estate for the extra space.

Fantastic Car, launch control is a hoot but not really much use in the real world, Don't hesitate!.

- Road tax is included.

- Cloth upholstery
- No upgrade options
- Excess mileage at 7p plus VAT

Good luck everyone - I hear they're very busy!

What happens insurance-wise if a lease car is written off.
Insurance companies seldom offer the true value of the vehicle in accident claims, do the lease company persue you for any difference, do the insurance company deal directly with the lease company ?

To add to this as well, leasing one of these is very accessible in terms of monthly cost and initial rental, compared to a deposit and purchase on PCP. This would be around £420 a month, plus a deposit of approx £7,800. Making the lease over 2 years, cheaper than the deposit you would have to pay!

Hello. Just a quick question as to why you would lease a car rather than buy one? I'm looking to change my car but would rather borrow money and pay back gradually than to lease one and end up paying same amount over five years and not keep the car? Obviously I'm after a second hand car about 3 years old with purchase. I Googled it but couldn't reach a conclusion so wanted to ask. Sorry if it's a silly question
master10 to neotarum2017
3 Jul 17 1 #16
If the depriciation of a new car is more than what it costs to lease, its a better deal. If you are looking at buying a 3 year old car, and comparing that to having a new car, you are comparing apples with oranges. Warranties, wear and tear etc is minimised with new cars than 3 year old purchases.

What you buy for the same price paying over 5 years, firstly wont be the same car, already 3 years old and prone to issues. Although after 3 years a car loses approx 50% of its value. Its all about new v old.
FocusST to neotarum2017
3 Jul 17 1 #19
Just to add to this, you don't have to lease the car, you can do a PCP which has similar cost benefits to a lease, but you then also have the option to buy it at the end of 3/4 years if you like. I did PCP as I want to keep the car hopefully and it was a cheaper way into the car/spec I wanted rather than buying used where you have less warranty and no real idea what has happened to the car before.
