As a TV box. Totally not worth it. Way too expensive.
A chinese android TV box will do just fine and cost £30-50, the shield doesn't perform any better as a media player than cheap chinese boxes.

For playing Android games... it's fantastic. Nothing comes close to matching it's performance on android.

Depends... 4k and passes Dolby digital sound too, most Chinese boxes won't do that

As its so close, may be worth holding out for Prime Day as the original 16Gb got reduced to £99 on PD last year, so this may go down a bit more.

Love mine. Retro mania installed. 15000 games to choose from. Wish this was for the K1 tab I'd be all over it.

I have a shield tv too and would love to do this with it, just don't really know how to set it up. Is there a good guide for the whole process anywhere? Ideally a youtube video as it's so much easier being able to follow along in real time.

Also how does it work with regards to games, does retromania come with them? or can it get them for you, or do you have to have a existing games collection and it's just like a front end for your own games?

Feel free to pm if this is too off topic for this thread.

It means they register the IMEI / IMSI or Serial numbers with the police so if it gets stolen and found the police can return it to you.

Do they even make the K1 tab any more ? My screen shattered, I looked around and I can't find anyone who will replace it... so searched for a new K1 and they cost more now than when they were new. eBay selling them for silly money and calling them "rare"

If you see any K1 for sale at a reasonable price / or find a screen please please share

Yeah I rarely use this since I got a smart TV to be honest.... Sometimes put kodi on for ufc that Ive missed and they are never 4k, my amazon stick is as much use! Hoping the new android tv update will make it a bit more exciting

Personally I hated the K1 tablet, I was taken in by the hype but it was just horrible, sold it after owning for about 3 months. However, I love the Shield TV.

I had one of these but sold it really quick and ended up with a cheaper amazon TV box, which does pretty much the same. I would better off look around for a nvidia shield tablet either first or second gen as at least you can use it as both tablet and gaming device. If this was under 100£,then I might consider it otherwise this will probably just gather dust. I also found that nvidia geforce itself is totally useless for gaming. They have very few games if you subscribe to the monthly service and they actually rely on the games on android market. Each to their own but would rater look around for the tablet as you can get more out of it.

I've got both shield and amazon TV box, if it's just kodi you're after then amazon box is fine. Don't think amazon can emulate wii or dreamcast but could be wrong. Shield way faster to navigate around

Got one of these on Prime Day last year. For £99 that I paid totally worth it, that said a Fire TV will cut the mustard if just for media. If they're down to that level again this year fully recommend it - particularly for PC gamers and emulation

I have two of these. Bought the new one for myself and gave my other to the folks. Fantastic device. Best media streamer I've owned. I've bought a number of Chinese boxes in the past, all have been subpar in some way or another. None of them come close to the functionality of the Shield. Gamestreaming is awesome. As is the 4k YouTube. Extremely fast. The Chinese ones I had always stuttered and froze often. Never experienced any glitches on either of my Shields so far. I'd recommend one normally, if the old one comes down to £99 again this year I'd say you'd be mad not to get one. Hell I might get a third just for giggles at that price!

I bought 4 of first generation nvidia shields, they are good as Game Streamer since this is the only model on the market gets the job done at the quality i need, but they are overkill as an Android TV box performance wise, AND they have MANY MANY issues that could drive you nuts, such as controller would not sync (I have two controllers replaced), would not wake up from sleep/stand-by mode, would not see any WIFI networks until hard-reboot, Controller would not Charge, Menu Freezes, App Crashes etc etc. First generation is sort of beta experiment.
They are good hardware tho, hope the second generation is a more mature product

Absolutely wrong. I own a couple of cheap Chinese boxes, a 1st gen Firestick and a 1st gen Nvidia Shield TV (the 2nd gen uses the same chipset). The Nvidia Shield is without doubt the slickest and fastest Android device I've ever owned, its almost as if it's not even running Android it's that good. Nvidia have a great history of supporting their Shield devices and my 1st gen device is running Android 7.0. The cheap Chinese boxes are using Amlogic S205 and S205X, they run well, but the ROMs are p*ss poor, the best thing you can do is find an older version of Nova Launcher and run those on the boxes then they're usable. Also you can stream games on the Nvidia Shield some of which have the same graphical quality as a GTX1080. So there you have it a review from some one that actually owns a Shield TV.

There isn't another TV box that does all the Shield TV does currently. Especially if you want to use the Nvidia gaming service.

Erm... What about the xiaomi mi box?

Around £60 of less from places life gearbest.

I have one, runs android TV so identical interface as the shield. Supports 4k and hdr. Granted, it's nowhere near the spec of the shield but if you want a device for streaming then it's over £100 cheaper.

I have one, it's been really good. Supports dolby and dts too.

robertr
9 Jul 17 #25
I did the update and then a factory reset as well as wanted to start from scratch, controller wouldn't sync, checked forums and is a widely reported fault after the last update, for the 2nd gen models it doesn't matter as they can sync the remote first and then the controller, but for those on 1st gen without a remote it has killed the connection. It's a shame as the hardware and firmware are exactly the same between the gens, but I prefer the 16Gb 1st gen as it has micro SD and micro usb which are missing from the 16Gb 2nd gen.
fishmaster
9 Jul 17 #26
The 2nd gen gives me hope that Nvidia will still support it because of the same chipset being used. If they can offer updates on 2nd gen then they can on 1st gen. I can't complain so far. I had an Advent Tegra Note 7 and updates were plentiful on that platform. Nvidia at least know how to support their hardware, maybe not so much their graphics cards, but I'm happy so far.

most do now. I have three. One by minix that does 4K, one by Justop that does 4K .... etc etc. Some of the really cheap ones yeah sure. But most around £40-50 will easily do 4K... now finding something to watch in 4K that's more difficult ;D

Just ignore him. I hate people who start off their sentences with "wrong" or "Absolutely wrong" etc etc...

I have several chinese boxes. They don't glitch/freeze etc. They play 4K.
There is literally no media (H.264/H.265/MP4/MPEG4-AVC) etc that they won't play. Maybe old ones were a bit ****, but I have a three year old MINIX (chinese android box) and it plays just as good as my shield TV. No problem. Can play an IMAX bluray no problem. No freezing glitching.

why do people come out and say uh wrong... etc... when clearly... it's not. and can be proven, so just ignore. Some people just want to pretend to be an authority on everything. Make up your own minds folks, do some research, watch some youtube videos etc... then you will see who is right and who is "Absolutely wrong"

Oh and I do own a shield. ... the second gen TV unit and a K1 tablet. so yeah, take it from me cus i have one too....or like I said, do you own research instead of trusting in random forum users anecdotal opinions. And no... folks... a £170 nvidia box does not match the graphics of a £400+ GTX 1080

9 Jul 17 #33
No I simply have a different opinion to you and you didn't like that I disagreed with you.

I own two Android boxes based on S205/X. OOBE is lousy, the ROMs are lousy. Once you get a half decent launcher like Nova on them they're OK. The peripherals such as mouse/keyboards are cheap, they often have data entry problems with the Enter key.

My point and it's a very good point, is the Nvidia Shield OOBE is well above any Chinese Android box. I'm not disagreeing with you for the sake of it, I disagree because I'm speaking the truth, after spending many hours testing these Chinese boxes. I used to buy them at a discount and review them, and yes I'd review them honestly.

You get what you pay for, yes you can p*ss around with cheap Chinese boxes with their shoddy remotes, in fact the remotes with Chinese boxes are totally useless for using with Showbox for example, you need to buy a cheap mouse /keyboard controller. You can make do with a Chinese Android box, in fact I've given more Chinese boxes away to friends. There's no way I would give sell the Shield until it's of no use anymore.

And yes folks Nvidia Geforce Now is rendered using actual GTX1080 cards.

This exchange between us will get boring quite soon, I'm never going to agree with you. The Nvidia Shield TV is worth the money and kills any Chinese Android box for usability. The whole system is slick everything is designed to work together, the experience is what I look for. If you want a cheap experience then go and get a Chinese box.

This is the type of cheap sh*t controller you will be using with your Android box >

You simply disagree, yet you start your post with "Absolutely wrong" yet it isn't.
We all have different opinions, thats fine. But I would never tell you your opinion is "Absolutely wrong" especially if the other person can prove their claim.

The shield is an excellent device. For playing games. As a media player, it's no better than the average android player.

You are cherry picking your own cases and presenting only the parts which match with your opinion.
My JusTop player has a gyroscopic air mouse that is better than the one that came with my LG TV. And, kodi will learn from any TV remote if it has an IR reader on the box... or you can use a phone/tablet.. and you can just go out and buy a decent remote... so your point on remotes is mute. Also the nvidia controllers are crap and expensive. I can post links to units that work great, and don't have shoddy remotes etc. As you said, we aren't going to agree, but at least don't try to mislead people by telling them all the android chinese players are **** and come with **** remotes because it simply isn't true and 5 minutes of Googling will prove it. As I said before to the other forum members, please, make up your own mind.

But you are absolutely wrong. The shield is a better media player than any Chinese boxes and that's a fact.
daskapital
9 Jul 17 #37
according to you.

I have a shield. I like it. It's not better at playing media than a chinese box.

I'm up against a lot of shield fans....... except I am one too.

Look at it like this.. an intel core i5 can play 4K media. It can play any video you throw at it. But so can an i3.
As I said before. The shield is an excellent device, graphically and speed wise.. it's very fast. Does it play my media any better than my chinese players ?Nope.

Is the shield a better device ? yes.
Is the shield faster/smoother at menus and opening apps ? yes.
Is it any different to a chinese media player when watching 4K steams ? Nope.
Is it any different to a chinese media player when watching 1080p bluray ? Nope.

So again. Excellent device, but if you want it just as a media player it's too expensive. But for games... excellent

I'm misleading no one on here >

Deals Posted 63 Comments19446 Likes 12926, speaks for itself. I'm never about misleading people, just giving an informed opinion.

Here's some blatant non cherry picking:

User Interface: Better than any Chinese box, better than the Fire TV interface. Chinese boxes have abysmal hard coded launchers, often don't support latest launchers properly. Everything about a Chinese box is a bodge. Bodged hardware, bodged software, bodged user experience.

Processing power: Better than any Chinese box

Media capabilities: Better than any Chinese box, 4K app support

Hardware controllers: Better than any Chinese box, you'd need to spend a significant amount such as GameSir 4S to try and match the controller.

Platform updates: Annihilates any Chinese box, Chinese boxes do not do platform updates. Nvidia consistently support their hardware, you will get updates and major Android OS updates on the Nvidia Shield TV
Game streaming: No Chinese box supports Geforce Now, you can bodge it using Moonlight Game Streaming, but hmm wait you need a decent PC for that, yes you have to pay for Geforce Now, either way the Geforce Now works better and you don't need a PC.

Everything as a TV box is better on the Nvidia Shield TV, you are absolutely wrong if you think a Chinese Android box is as good.

Anyway don't let me 'mislead' you any more folks, here's a review and it wasn't done by me  >

9to5google.com/201…17/

"Amazon Video is on the Shield TV, and that’s a big deal

Nvidia has worked out a deal with Amazon to bring the company’s Instant Video service to an Android TV set top box for the first time. This opens the door to even more fantastic content, including 4K movies and TV shows like one of my personal favorites, The Grand Tour."

"However, since not everyone has access to a gaming PC, Nvidia has an alternative. For about $8 a month, the company will open up access to its GeForce Now streaming service which essentially brings the power of the company’s epic GTX 1080 graphics card and crams it into the Shield."

Sigh ok. Last post on the subject. Probably nobody is bothering to read mine but as I said please make up your own mind.

Is the shield better ? Yes. As I've said it is. For games.

Does the shield have a better CPU/GFX card ? Yes. Because it's a games box. Do you need 192 GFX cores to play a 4K movie ? No. So it's overkill if it's just for movies.

Chinese boxes don't do updates ???? Please folks... go to somewhere like minix forum and see if they do updates... they do. Here you go, one firmware was released 13 minutes ago...

minixforum.com/for…60/

and here are software updates for the Xaomi Mi Box....

en.miui.com/thr…tml

so they don't do updates... ok so thats bull....

Totally agree on game playing / streaming. Never doubted this.
Am I "absolutely wrong" about chinese players ? Nope. Go ask someone who has one.
I can literally throw any media at my chinese box and it plays it just as well/good/same framerate.

Oh and mine supports passtrhough 4K. Even the kodi website lists hardware that does it ....

WeTek Play2
WeTek Hub
MINIX U9
nVIDIA Shield running Android Nougat (**Be aware - Audio passthrough is unreliable for some users)
Xiaomi Mi Box (uses backported Nougat Audio code)

so yeah , it does it as well. So the shield is NOT better because of 4K passthrough, plenty of Chinese devices can do it.
Also notice how Kodi themselves say the shield passthrough is unreliable ? I think Kodi know what they are talking about.

forum.kodi.tv/sho…916

Scroll down to "HD Audio passthrough" / android bit.

As this is my last comment on the subject as you just can't win....

I never said the shield is ****. I own the TV and the K1 tablet and I love them. But would I recommend them to someone who just wanted to watch movies on it ? Nope.

I have amazon video too, here's the android app that makes it work on Chinese players that have play store. Am not sure if it supports 4K that might be a winner for the shield. I've literally never found anything I wanted to watch on Amazon in 4K so I can't comment on if the android one does it or not. Maybe.

If I was given an Nvidia Shield TV and a Chinese Android box for free and I was given the chance to sell one to give myself some free money. I would sell the Chinese box because the whole user experience is extraordinarily better on the Shield. It's about the whole package, when you use these Chinese Android boxes, you just keep thinking yeah it has some decent specs, it can do the job, I just find it frustrating to use, I have to mess about to get it anywhere near how I want, I can't update it, you get app compatibility problems, where they won't load unless you clear cache, then it happens again etc. You just think to yourself this just feels bodged, it feels shoddy, yes I've saved money but I've p*ssed myself off more by saving money. The Shield TV saves you time, because it works reliably.

One of my boxes supplied by Justop it's one called Droibox Ares (yes I'm thinking they didn't intentionally miss the d out of the name, even the name is bodged) came with a crap remote, as all these boxes do, the mouse support is useless. So I got the mouse/keyboard controller and that has the Q focus bug so when you press Enter it thinks you want to enter Q. So every time you press enter it doesn't enter it puts a Q on the screen. Totally bodged all this Chinese stuff is. That's why I gave so many boxes away. I just kept a couple for testing so I can help friends out when they phone me and say this free bodged box you gave me is playing up again please help me fix it.

I think you have been rather unlucky then. I have suffered no such issues with a MINIX or a Xiomi mi box. And of course, I would sell the chinese box in that scenario... who wouldn't would anyone keep a Fiat instead of a Ferrari when they got both for free ?

I agree the shield is smoother. But it doesn't actually play videos any better. Damn, I just replied when I said I wouldn't.

Anyway... buy whatever makes you happy folks. But at least consider a chinese box if you just want to play media. You can even send it back if it's so horrible at least you won't have lost any money and if it works fine for you then you saved £100+

Lots of different opinions on this thread.

Let's just sum it up like this... Everyone agrees that the shield is currently the best media player... Including the fact it does Netflix and Amazon video - you don't get both with other android generic boxes... Even the Mi box only supports Netflix.

If you can afford the shield, it's the best one to get.

If you can't afford the shield OR you only want a box for Kodi then don't be put off of a cheaper box.

FYI... Even the shield doesn't support all of the uk catchup apps... I think it may do iplayer but that's about it.

Personally, I'd be tempted to wait for the next fire tv device... The fire tv supports catchup, Kodi and Netflix and has a very solid UI and very good hardware and in my opinion has the better remote control (including play and pause!)
zhris to dotnetter
10 Jul 17 #47
If you are happy to use a keyboard and mouse, you can sideload any of the catch up apps ( iPlayer, ITV hub, all 4, my 5 ), which are all usable though you may have issues using the playback controls. Windows key + / to bring up a list of handy keyboard commands.
dotnetter to zhris
10 Jul 17 #50
Yeah, I get you can sideload the apks but as you say, it's not ideal. I tried itv hub and it launches in portrait mode, probably something that can be sorted but then there are lovely other issues.
zhris to dotnetter
11 Jul 17 #52
Exactly, it's not perfect, though I'm hoping for explicit keyboard and mouse support with a future android TV update. One of the first apps I install on any TV box is rotation control ( CrapeMyrtle ), to force horizontal orientation, 99% of apps scale just fine even those that are natively portrait.

It's a decent, nay very good box but not worth the £170 they ask for. I'm amazed they get away with a re-design then add £20 on top of the previous model with the same spec. It's two or three years old tec by now and should be under £100. If the on-line game stream service was free then the Price would be easier to bear.
Like the others say wait for Prime day just to make sure they don't get discounted.
Just realised they are asking £190 at the link provided before discount. crazy as the original was £150.
zhris to beljim7419

Original doesn't come with the remote, if you need the remote and purchased separately, thats another £50.
ST3123 to beljim7419
10 Jul 17 #49
Much as I like the shield tv, I agree it's amazing how it has held it's value over the years. i think partly it was such a strong spec at launch and the way technical advancements are plateauing lately across processors and GPUs and the like has helped it keep current, even high spec into 2017. Nvidia have certainly gotten a tonne of mileage out of the X1, don't forget a variant also powers the Switch too.

In terms of price, for a good while before they relaunched it as the 2017 model, it was actually going for significantly over the standard price on eBay thanks to the sheer scarcity of the units. Methinks Nvidia are taking a leaf out of Nintendo's book (artificial scarcity) as I'm sure they could have made plenty more if they had wanted too. Perhaps the Nvidia Nintendo partnership isn't so strange after all :relaxed:

Nice tip! Installed and 99% working (occasionally the steam stops and needs starting again but guessing this is a cache size issue). Certainly works better than the itv hub app on my TV which is shocking! I also added iplayer and TV play... Shame there's nothing for All 4.

Price has remained the same on Prime Day but should consider that this is the updated smaller unit and it now includes the remote and the controller in the box. Previous gen was only Controller.
robertr
11 Jul 17 #55
Shame the price has remained the same, however Its hardly updated. The hardware and firmware are exactly the same, but by making it smaller they've removed the micro-sd card slot and the micro-usb port from the 16Gb model which the original one had. It may now come with a remote but it has a far cheaper build quality than the original remote (albeit that was an additional cost). My advice would be to get the original 16Gb, then purchase an original remote (if needed).

by far the best all in one no nonsense 4k hdr media solution for most people. the cheap Chinese boxes aren't even comparable. however for a little more money and better gaming a hardcore user maybe better going for a homebuild small htpc, obviously for most people this wouldn't be needed and this would be the ideal solution.
