Halifax is now offering £20 Cashback for people who take out the card from today until 3rd September 2017. All you have to do is spend ANY amount abroad in foreign currency by 30th September 2017
Great for the holidays
- Cashback offer valid on accounts opened by 3rd September 2017 - The £20 cashback will only apply on the first transaction made abroad by 30th September 2017 - The £20 cashback will be applied to your credit card retail balance within 90 days of the transaction being made - The cashback offer is only valid on one transaction per customer
So if the card wasn't good enough already this might be the reason you want to apple, additional benefits include: (there is also another thread which includes these benefits but though id mention anyway)
- No fee to use anywhere worldwide (interest charges apply) - No cash withdrawal fee (interest charges apply and some ATM providers may charge a fee) - No annual fee
How could we put a card in credit? if it's like a payment from the linked account to the halifax credit card, how is that done? ie, I guess the credit card won't have a bank account and sort code, so where should the payment for the credit be sent?

Mine and partners £20 cashbacks both became available about 3 weeks after we returned from our holiday. Bought 2 items whilst away (one on each card) for around £7 - £8 each (only paid in local currency , in this case dollars) ..... then £40 back , nice

Mines the same. They extended the introductory period to 2022. Click here
"Non–sterling transaction fee waived
from account opening until 31 August 2022
...And until 31 August 2022 you won't pay a non–sterling transaction fee on your foreign ATM withdrawals or spend.
Use your Barclaycard abroad and benefit from Visa's competitive exchange rate. Plus you can get up to 56 days interest-free on all non-sterling transactions. As long as you pay the main balance and any Purchase Plan instalments due on your statement each month, you will not incur interest from the date of the non-sterling transaction until it is repaid."

Would recommend virgin as you can spend abroad for free and its only £1.50 to withdraw cash! No credit check etc... And they have branches. starling bank looks good but app based only and they are very new so you don't know whats going to happen. (Obv money is protected) They will change their deal i suppose once enough people sign up thats normally what happens

I would recommend Starling bank. Especially if you travel long term and cannot find easily find somewhere secure to log online. The fee free part is only of (financial) benefit if you actually avoid the fees  It's costly not to pay it off, to the extent that you should be looking at other cards and/or more cash purchases. But try Starling Bank. If I travel, I don't have any problem using my 3G phone data within Europe to check online banking and/or using a reputable hotel chain WiFi, this may be more of a problem outside of Europe admittedly.

On a credit card the exchange rate is determined not by the bank but the company that handles the transaction i.e. Visa or MasterCard.
You can go on their websites at anytime to see the rate you will get. I've always found my MasterCard card gets a better rate than the Visa

I've been in Gran Canaria for 2 weeks, put card £1500 in credit, used to purchase & for cash ATM withdrawals, statement issued yesterday - no charges, they can't charge you debit interest when your in credit, exchange rate also beat they best available on the market and is better than bank staff get ( sister works in a bank ). I've been using it for 10 years with no complaints

If you use this as intended i.e for holidays, and have zero balance in between. Then these guys try to close your account due to lack of use. Done it to me twice now.

Had it for years with 6-8 months between uses and never had an issue with any "lack of use"

I've had my card for about 2 years and only have a balance on it twice a year. I've never had any problems with my account being closed due to inactivity.

That's the fee for withdrawals. The interest rate is over 24% that you'll pay that until you've cleared the balance. I got the earlier version that came me 0% interest until August 2018 on cash withdrawals aswell.

Please note that whilst you're not charged for withdrawing cash, you get charged interest from the day you withdraw it, there's no interest free period when you withdraw cash on most credit cards...

True but Barclaycard's new travel card doesn't charge interest as long as you repay the statement in full.

Well either pay the balance immediately or load the credit card with a positive balance before.

Is there anyway to purchase something cheap say in France online from UK to qualify for the £20, maybe using a VPN to make appear I'm out of the UK?

Because I've better things to do with my time than to try to find somewhere I can securely get online whilst I'm travelling.
Do you do much long term travel? Which card is right for you that I should choose over this?

Why don't you pay it off the same (or next) day. If you are not able to, then the card isn't right for you in the first place.

It's nothing to do with not paying attention, some people clearly don't have as much time on their hands as you do

A great card, just a shame they stopped the £5 credit each month you spent £300 on the card (other terms and conditions applied).

Is that 100%? That could save me a few quid as I'm normally withdrawing £600 a month for 4-8 months a year, so that interest soon adds up!

Do you get charged interest if you withdraw cash but already have a credit balance which covers the amount?

No interest charges when card is front loaded. Also they have decent balance transfer rates with no fees if you need to shuffle without affecting credit rating.

I've not checked the market, I'm sure some cards treat cash withdrawals as they do purchases. I just thought the description was a bit misleading - no fees at all. Technically true, but you'll still get charged interest no matter when you clear the balance.
