This is the price for the 4GB/64GB band 20 version.

Free delivery option should prevent being picked up at UK customs and charged VAT.

I appreciate that this is not a 'UK' deal as delivered from HK - however this site no longer appears to be restricted to just UK merchants?

camera is far better than the reviews say, they seem to hold it to flagship standards, its not flagship standard, its not flagship price either.
If you want a phone with a reasonable camera that is good in daylight, and not bad (passable) in low light this is it.
if you are really bothered about picture quality and having to have the best still buy this phone, and with the money you save over a S8 or iphone buy a low end but SLR camera as that would beat flagship phone camera functions.

I bought a 2nd one for my OH and she is well impressed with camera and its video mode too, she is snap happy and she has started getting into photography, when she wants a really good pic she uses her camera, when she doesn't have the camera on her the phone still does a very good job as a backup.

Yeah, quite a few. See . Just be aware of the different versions if looking for customs ROMs yourself. The original Redmi Note 4 is Mediatek codenamed Nikel. This deal is Global Version Redmi Note 4 Snapdragon codenamed Mido.

Bought the 3gb 64gb (band 20) version to replace an S7 with a cracked screen. More than happy with it, camera is a little limited but good enough for selfies/general photos. Other than that very snappy. Will never pay £600 for a phone again.

Took around 2 weeks to be delivered from HK

Geekbuying are listed as a seller to avoid on the xiaomi reddit sub due to selling phones preloaded with malware and they lie and don't actually have stock, they try and acquire the item after you order and often cancel after a week or two.

The phones great though, I'm writing this on one.

The global one with band 20 will work all over and covers all UK networks, no problems with GPS either.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/wiki/general/purchase
There's no mention of malware under Geekbuying and they also recommend Gearbest and Banggood which I think you've commented about in previous threads for installing malware ridden vendor ROMs. Bare in mind this is a Global Version, pre-installed with Official Global ROM. Unlike for China version with China ROM pre-installed, sellers have no reason to open and tamper with the ROM. If you look up youtube videos, for "Redmi Note 4 Global Version Gearbest or Banggood" you'll see people have received sealed boxes despite these retailers having a history of vendor ROMs. I highly doubt Geekbuying would tamper with the phone when it's already suitable for their customers. I haven't seen anyone who's bought a B20 Global Version, mentioning a vendor ROM or unsealed box. The main reason sellers install their own vendor ROM is because China ROM doesn't have wide multi-language support or Play Store and there isn't always an official Global ROM.

Guys - some advice please.

I want to pay via Paypal using my credit card to draw funds from but am not sure if its best to pay in $ and let Paypal/Credit card company use their conversion rate(s) OR convert the price on the website and pay the same way but in £. What's the best /cheapest option bearing in mind I found this:

When you use PayPal to pay for purchases from an international website they will use their own internal exchange rate to convert the international currency to UK £ and then also add about 3% commission on top for doing so!

You can avoid both of these by setting PayPal to bill you in the international currency instead; you then pay this off using your bank or payment card who will use the fair market exchange rates. And with many banks and payment cards offering 0% commission on international currency exchanges you will be better off.

To set this up in PayPal, go here https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_profile-merchant-pull-funding&buyer_hub and choose "Conversion Options" next to your funding source. Then, on the following page choose "Bill me in the currency listed on the seller's invoice".
wardi69 to hotukuser2015
6 Jun 17 #22
Paying with PayPal in GBP using their excahnge rate costs a lot more than paying in the local currency and getting your credit card company to do the currency conversion.

Credit card companies will use a standard rate which is usually very good. If you get a credit card with no fees like the Halifax Clarity Credit Card or if you need something now, a Revolut card

TL;DR: Never let PayPal convert your money, always pay in the sellers currency for the best rate.

See here also: http://iamtenten.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/paypal-exchange-rate-how-to-save-money.html

You must have missed all the other non UK stocked deals then. AFAIK if you can get it delivered to the UK and it's a deal then it's a deal. Too many people worrying about things they don't need to worry about these days. I say it as I see it, I voted HOT on this deal regardless.

6 Jun 17 #20
I wasn't implying they were recommended. You suggested that the reason they're not recommended is related to malware so I was pointing out that it's not what Reddit says. I mentioned Gearbest and Banggood because they're also known for vendor ROMs which you've been vocal about being ridden with malware. I just think your comment about malware would cause unnecessary concern, hence my reply.

Yes, only thing I'd check if buying from geekbuying is that the phone comes factory sealed - meaning no-one has installed non factory software - banggood are known for this.
I prefer using aliexpress because of how their buying process works compare to normal Chinese retailers, but this is a very good price.

Dont buy these phones, the packages self destruct 5 seconds after you open them

They are full of malware, make sure you stay on the stock ROM they come preloaded with

Ignore the 1500 threads about chinese phones on hukd its all lies, the people voting hot are all paid to do so

Dont buy anything from China, and if you do make sure you contact royal mail and inform them you are waiting on a phone that you ordered 4 days ago

The Chinese companies are desparate to rip you off because they dont want your business

Just dont post deals anymore, i have posted some cracking deals that mods have removed

We are obviously not savvy/intelligent enough to make our own decisions on online purchases

Although tbf to the mods 70% of the questions asked on these threads do make you wonder about the masses

avoid geekbuying in case your mobile is lost by royal mail you ll need to provide geek buying written confirmation from Royal mail that your mobile is actually lost to qualify for a refund. I wonder if royal mail will ever write something like that as they dont want to deal with the recipient of the lost item. Aliexpress is good in that sense as it ll refund you after 60 days or so in case your mobile is lost. Lost 2 mobiles ordered from Aliexpress ordering third one now. Lets see if I get successful the third time.

Mediatek are fine nowadays, though they do seem to take longer to lock on. I compare my wife's Lenovo Vibe Shot (Snapdragon) with my K3 Note and she has lock within 10 seconds while mine takes about 25-30 secs. Fine once it is locked.

Ive had this phone for a while now and thought I'd share some main pros and cons:

Pros:
Great screen
1) Good battery and quick charge
2) Cheap/Good Value

Cons: (mainly bugs)
1) Screen freezes every now and then (for me, 90% of the time when I play a game). The only way to unfreeze is turn the screen off, re login and enter password etc.
2) The phone will allow to prefer either 4G or 3G. Being on 4G data plan, I naturally select 4G. HOwever, when in areas of poor 4G coverage, the phone will not swicth over to 3G (which has better coverage and is receiving more data at the time) and will be stubborn and stick with 4G. This causes issues with things not loading and very unreliable for example if im using satnav.
3) As people have mentioned, the camera (except in bright daylight)

update:
although the video is for a redmi 3, the problem is the same: technically, the screen doesnt freeze but the 3 buttons dont work:

No, just allows you to have more apps open- the difference for my daughter is amazing moving from 2Gb. Clearly, these will use up battery if they are running.
mrkhal1l
7 Jun 17 #52
In a literal sense, more ram does increase power draw... But only by a little bit.

Nothing significant for a phone user to feel.

But you'll definitely feel it when your phone doesn't have enough ram!

Simple answer: no, more ram doesn't reduce battery life.

leelukehope
7 Jun 17 #54
The extra gig of ram doesn't seem worth it on these phones with their aggressive power management. Similar to my Huawei, it wants to close any app pulling power in the background - good for battery life but annoying for multitasking. My P9 lite has never had less than 1GB ram available.

hey,
1 i think its the game you are playing, i hearthstone this 4gb 64gb version all the time and no freezing, not with any other game i have tried either. are you maybe using sd card to store games?

2, ensure VoLTE is switched off, it requires 4g for calls on VoLTE and doesnt switch happily when you hit a non 4g area, I have never been asked to "prefer" 4g or 3g in any other way, are you sure you have the redmi note 4 (4gb 64gb global) never had issues of it not happily switching to 3g data myself.

I'm not sure if Beta having it is a definite sign Stable will too. For the RN3, Global Beta builds started including UK region at some point towards the end of last year. Thread here<< mentioning it but I don't think it's on any Stable build that was released after. Not sure if it'll be different for RN4. Hopefully they'll keep it on Stable release though, since it gets asked about a lot. Even again, in the comment directly after yours.

Completely agree with you, camera is pretty good and takes some really nice images. Anyone who thinks otherwise should check out the Redmi Note 4 group on instagram which only involves taking images from a Redmi Note 4

Mine has Global ROM in it as well but unfortunately no UK listed in it ... But still doesn't make much of a difference, just select a nearby region and it works fine.
paulandpam1
8 Jun 17 #74
It doesn't even need to be a nearby region because some regions India for example get the OTA software earlier than nearer places. Also I tried mine on a few other regions and found some of the original menu features disappeared 'Volte' was the first one I found that vanished. I think most people prefer India as the region.
mobeenkhan
8 Jun 17 #75
The only difference region makes is to tell which core apps need to be installed like if China is selected then some apps and features specifically for China and surrounding region will be activated ... I have mind for Pakistan but I live in UK and it's working fine ... but maybe that's why I do not have the Carousel feature in my phone

funnily enough you just answered your own question, settings/sim card & mobile network
there it says VoLTE.
which phone do you have? Redmi note 4, note 4x, or note 4 (global).
there are 3 versions, plus have you updated to miui 8?
also have you got the "automatically disable navigation buttons" option enabled?
Syst3mzero
9 Jun 17 2 #86
how slow is snail speed? mine zooms to 60% in under an hour (about 45-50mins), at 60% they do slow down the charging due to the way the cells are filled. normally it estimates 2hrs 30min and ends up taking 2hr 45 to go from about 6% to 100.
I make sure to close all apps when I charge it and I'm using 2a 5v charger.
for such a large battery I think that's pretty snappy.

£ for £ you can not get a better value phone than this. I got the 3gb RAM 32GB version for about £110 about a month ago from Ali Express, took 11 days to be delivered.
Crossbow
9 Jun 17 #89
I'd say OP3T's camera is reasonably better, but XRN4's battery is much better. Pity they don't combine those 2 in most phones, unless you're prepared to pay a lot more. But, even then, it's hard to find a single phone that really excels at both.

Fast-charging helps with a phone that's weak/weaker in the battery department, but one cannot usually do much to improve things with a phone that's weak/weaker in the camera department. So, if price is not an issue, I'd opt for the OPT3.

Ahhh found the VoLTE, will give it a go and see if I notice the difference, thanks!

No, just double checked, every app has not got 'disable navigation button' enabled. Anyway, I think you just double tap the button to override this setting. Weirdly, I discovered that when the buttons dont work no matter how many times I press it, instead of locking your phone, unlocking again (simple but does get annoying), another way to solve the problem is to rotate the screen. After you rotate it, the buttons work again! This has to be a bug! lol

Also, yes, its up to date (miui 8.0.4.0) and not sure if its global but on the "about phone/model no:", it just says Redmi note 4.

that you checked? that's the global option rather than app specific, to be honest though it does sound like a factory reset might be a good idea.
my miui is "miui global 8.2 stable (8.2.5.0)". if you arent entirely sure if yours is global check the cpu, deca core is not global, octa core is snapdragon and fully supports 4g in the uk. also obviously the miui version should say global too.

If it's the same phone you were seeking help about in your previous ask thread, then yours is an original Mediatek Redmi Note 4 since the screenshots on your ask thread show it is deca-core. This deal is a Snapdragon Redmi Note 4 Global Version which is octa-core and is like a 2017/MK2 version of your phone. Whilst, I'm not sure about the problems you've mentioned, the Mediatek version is often considered more problematic. Mediatek phones being associated with common issues was even discussed by others earlier in the thread. The most recent MIUI for the Mediatek Redmi Note 4 is 8.2.1.0: http://en.miui.com/download-309.html so you should update to that. Although I'm not sure how much help that will be in regards to your phone's problems.

ahhh ok. thanks for you help.

Just last question, I've used the phones settings to check for updatres but it says it is. Would i get problems if I manually update it via your link?
dreadzone101
12 Jun 17 #101
As long as it's the correct ROM for your phone then it should work. Your screenshots show MIUI 8.0.4.0(MBFMIDG) which is Mediatek Global ROM as shown on this thread<<. The link in my previous comment is the latest Mediatek Global ROM so you should be able to manually download from the link, then go into updater app, select the 3 dots at the top right corner, "choose update package" and then select the downloaded file. It should update fine but I'd back up your phone beforehand just incase something does go wrong.

Judging from comments on previous threads, your region setting can impact your latest update. People have said India and Singapore. However the Redmi Note 4 released in those regions are Snapdragon versions whereas the Mediatek didn't have a wide release outside of China. So I'm not sure if changing that setting would help. Although it's odd your updater has still yet to receive it. According to this thread<< it was released last month.

I'm not sure what the purpose of that reply is? The reason for my initial comment to you was because you were associating Geekbuying's criticism with malware and I said it's usually because of vendor ROMs which are common with all retailers on China versions of phones. In the subsequent reply, I was not suggesting Gearbest were better and even said I saw what you meant about Reddit recommending them for non-phones so not sure why you are pointing out someone received an empty box? I was also not saying vendor ROMs weren't an issue as it was me who brought them up to begin with so what is the purpose of your Mi6 link? As I said vendor ROMs are an issue with China versions. Mi6 = China release with China ROM only, at the moment hence vendor ROMs being an issue with them is expected. See final line of my initial comment. However the Global Version Redmi Note 4 is from Singapore/Malaysia/Indonesia region. Sealed and pre-installed with Global ROM. Hence why I thought your talk about malware would cause unnecessary concern and pointed out vendor ROMs with potential malware are tied to China versions that are tampered with because they would have China ROM if sealed.

I had a suspicion you had that one, you will still get 4g on band 7 which is available on some networks, but the 4g problem is that you cant use band 20 which all the networks use and area to area you may jump from 7 to 20. this may contribute to your 4g 3g problems.

Does anyone have an idea roughly how long this will take to deliver? Tracking number hasn't shown anything for the last few days.
morty
12 Jun 17 #106
It states how long to expect on the page you order from and that you tend to need to wait a set time before it is even shipped.

If tracking has stopped that means it may of been held some place which is common the last location on tracking gives it away, I know when I ordered in the past it had few days stop in Germany and another in China but when Royal Mail get them the tracking doesn't appear to work anyway.

13 Jun 17 #107
i bought the 3gb / 32gb version from Ali Express last month on the 17th. still not here. On tracking. it says "Arrival at processing center." been like that for 6 days. anyone got any advice.
paulandpam1
13 Jun 17 #108
If the tracking shows it's arrived in the destination country then its in the hands of Royal mail if it's not even left Chinas processing centre then there may be a problem.
I ordered the same phone as you from the Aliexpress deal with standard delivery on the 22nd June and it arrived a week ago, here's how my tracking went

cheers bro. it actually came today. happy with it for now. although I thought it came with the Sony sensor. but mine is the Samsung sensor which is annoying.

14 Jun 17 #110
How do you know which sensor it has? Is the Sony one better?

yep, Samsung sensor. that's the reason I'll be buying the oneplus 5

15 Jun 17 #112
If you're into your photography that much I'd recommend just saving up for a decent DSLR, OnePlus phones seem to be going in an ever increasing price direction. The OnePlus 3 was the beginning, ever since then it's just got worse with the 3T and now soon the 5. I bought the OPO, and it was great value at the time, especially with CyanogenOS backing.
finnmaccool
15 Jun 17 #113
Not really into my photography that much, but have seen a few issues with the camera in this phone. Don't get me wrong, it's a great phone, but I just want something with a camera equivalent to my old Galaxy Note 4.
paulandpam1
15 Jun 17 3 #114
Have you tried changing the 'picture quality' setting to high because by default both front and rear are set as standard.
I find the camera more than adequate.

Thanks I've gone for the Dedenhams one with 2% quidco and getting £145 back from Amazon for the Honor, other half has pro 3 so it's a brand I wanted but was conscious of getting band 20 this time around, cheers anyway (highfive)

Anybody found a decent screen protector? I've trawled the various threads, but all the links I've found show one with an extra hole at the top.
paulandpam1
21 Jun 17 #124
This global version needs a Redmi note 4X screen protector because of the different sensor layout.
Aliexpress seem to have a few glass ones listed but i'm not sure of the quality but if you also need a rear cover you also need the 4X I can highly recommend the one I got delivered yesterday with the dubious name of iPaky, I had previously bought two different types from amazon uk and they where rubbish.
Take a look on youtube for the Redmi note 4X iPaky case.
tyke
21 Jun 17 #125
Even the Note 4X protectors I've looked at seem to have a different layout, with a 3rd hole at the top. I found an ok case, thanks. I got one with bank card slots.

21 Jun 17 1 #126
I had relatively useful updates on the delivery to Dublin Ireland.
Until it went to customs.
I had to provide details of how much I paid with screenshots to them.
So in € it was €154 from Aliexpress and then customs tax of €35 and a customs handling fee of €10.
So all in €199.
Just thought this might be useful to some of the Irish users of this website.

Xiaomi MC Store - i ordered on 10Jun and still "The supplier is processing your order".
Xiaomi Dreami Store - i ordered the 3/32GB version a month ago which took 2 week to arrive.

considering cancelling the order and placing a new one with another supplier.

does anyone know if there is any difference between the advertised global versions?

Has everyone received their order? I ordered on the 21st and is still on processing. I sent an email on the 30th for an update and got no reply, Sent another today saying I will be cancelling in a few days if I don't get any update.

I don't mind it being on a slow boat and taking a few weeks but updates just ease my mind.

sorry about the long reply. haha. you can install cpu-z that should tell you what sensor you have yeah the Sony sensor is much better from samples I've seen. but. I've installed a Cyanogen Camera app. which improves the images dramatically.

after two weeks of this phone can say it's amazing. I bought it mainly for the battery life. and I was not let down. can last me two days or more of standard use. which for me is medium usage.
