You make it sound like it's some basic 2015 processor and that the price is too high for it? Here's two ends of the scale. The 64GB Asus 12.5" Chromebook C302CA @ £600<< and the Macbook 12" early 2016 @ £1199<< both have the same processor as this Xiaomi Air 12. A lot of used/refurbished laptops with the M3-6Y30 would also be £400+.

Both gearbest and Xiaomi are reputable companies in China. The chances are higher for you defaulting your credit card payment than not receiving what you ordered

I agree - I've placed two orders with gearbest in the past. One was posted in two parts and was supposed to be delivered by yodel. One part arrived, but the more valuable one got lost. Gearbest was only keep asking me to contact the courier company, which I did a few time until yodel confirmed that they#ve lost the parcel. Still, gearbest didn't want to send a replacement nor to refund the money. I had to escalate it to paypal.
The second time the drone which arrived had a washer missing. Maybe it was returned to gearbest by a customer who took it, or maybe the manufacturer missed it. Again, very poor customer service and aftersale support and again, I had to go through paypal. I agreed and accepted 10 usd refund to cover the cost of finding the missing part on the internet (which was almost impossible for this model of drone)

Would anyone seriously risk this kind of money with Gearbest?

Don't pay directly via a bank transfer or a debit card and there shouldn't be any risk.
Paypal or Credit Card and you're protected.
Paypal is super-easy for stuff like this.
You dispute the transaction, and if they don't reply, you get your money back. If they do reply but don't help and you're not happy, you get your money back. You're in control. Only you can close the dispute when you're satisfied and/or refunded.

if the laptop has a fault you will be left high and dry. Gearbest won't want to know and Xiaomi will say we don't sell in the UK so its a grey import.

I have one of these. it's a great little laptop. The non-uk keyboard doesn't bother me. Great battery life and good screen. USB type c charging comes in handy too as i only need to take one charger for both phone and laptop when travelling. I bought it from gearbest about half a year ago. Came pretty quickly and no customs charge although I appreciate not everyone will be that lucky.

Windows however be careful. I ordered a Chinese Windows tablet from one of these sites a while ago and when I did a factory reset on it, the OS defaulted back to Mandarin only.
I was slightly more fortunate than most in that I could guess enough of what some of the characters meant to get through the setup and install the language packs but obviously most people on here probably can't do that. You'd probably have to use a smartphone and Google translate or find a guide from somewhere.

Screen size doesn't dictate price.
The processor is only one gen behind and IPC improvements have been minimal for years now

what's your point?
nothing wrong with that CPU,and £381 is actually bargain price range for laptops these days.
also 12 inch is the sweet spot size of modern laptops in case you didn't know.

Our Verdict
A very stylish laptop let down by a few design and component issues. Still, this is a great first attempt by Xiaomi and one that will entice punters who want a MacBook Air look without paying the Apple price.

Laptops with Core m processors aren't cheap, and honestly, used and refurbished versus a new laptop?
dreadzone101
5 Jun 17#22
I was just pointing out to them that it isn't a bog standard processor and that laptops with this processor are normally above this price since their comment came across like it was too expensive. I did say at the end that a lot of used/refurbished with the same processor would be £400+ which yours links are. There's obviously a lot of different factors to consider when it comes to laptops, but again I was just talking about processor itself rather than making implications about the overall value of the deal.

Errr it's not a great deal more money for quite a bit more spec however.
Similar specs for only £40 more. Additionally both are UK based suppliers so quicker delivery, some chance of aftersales support. I'm sure a bit more looking and I could find a few other options even closer to the GBest deal.

$GB seems pretty low, can you upgrade it? I know it's not for power users, but 8GB is a nice sweet spot for an ultraportable.

Gearbest have a pretty poor reputation for items getting lost or massive delays on them arriving. I ordered a funnily enough Xiaomi powerbank from them via a deal on here eventually after 3 months of chasing them about it getting nowhere, I went to my card provider who refunded the cost. Others in the same thread had been praising the product for about 2 months. Annoyingly 2 days later mine then arrived.
That's been the only order from them I've ever had any issue with but to suggest that ordering is low risk is not that sensible as you will receive very little by way of aftersales support. There are plenty of others who have had items never turn up.
All told, I would use Gearbest or other sites like DX.com quite happily for low value items but I would say it's how risk averse you happen to be. For me, I'm just not that interested in messing about, I want my item to arrive and not wait forever to get it.
As to Xiaomi I've got quite a few of their products now and they really are up there for me as a premium quality brand at budget brand prices. The MiBand 2 and powerbank chargers well up there for me in terms of being quality products.
