This weekend there are First Class train tickets on Virgin East Coast for £20 one way this weekend 24/25th June. Hot Cakes deal.
I've just checked availability between York and London Kings Cross and it would be £40 each return (booked as two single £20).
Includes wifi a free refreshments which were a range of soft and alcoholic drinks, sandwiches and snacks last time I traveled First Class on Virgin East Coast.
Great price if you're free this weekend. I think other routes are included but didn't check as on a dodgy 3G connection.
Ends Friday.

The food and drink in first class at the weekends is rubbish compared to the weekday first class service. You get a snack box and some soft drinks.
However, don't forget that you are entitled to use the first class lounges before departure and for up to an hour after arrival. You can help yourself to drinks and snacks there too.

It's £30 one way Newcastle to London so might want to amend the title to state "from".

Great tip re - using the lounges. As per the poster you have to queue within the buffet car and collect your food and drink doggie bag. No trolley service and definitely no alcohol. With how popular the promotion's going to be apart from the larger seats it's just like you're in standard class/

Still cheaper than cattle class though, which may be distinctively empty this weekend

The food is rubbish at the weekends - got a yogurt for breakfast down and mediocre sandwich back up.
You get free wifi (on request) if you book via the Virgin East Coast Website anyway.
The slightly bigger seats don't help if you have a 'larger' person sitting opposite
If they are cheaper than standard then is a good deal but don't expect much (food and drink wise)

Good deal if travelling this weekend, but for future if you book in advance then you can get first class tickets for greatly reduced rates (I normally get a 1st class return for around £52.00 Newark>Kings Cross).
Why don't they do anything like this on the west coast, I travel all the time and rarely does Virgin red give me an offer for the west coast

That's because West coast has nearly new rolling stock & the East coast has ancient rolling stock & fares are far more expensive since Virgin took over

It'd be saying to Glaswegians "All you can drink AND a free trip to London for £20".
Can you imagine the carnage that would ensue.

Tickets can only be booked via the promotional link which is only accessible through the app. Tried to find the web page but not able to I'm afraid.

Just checked the Standard Class for one way on the same journey I looked at. £53 - so a saving of £33 straight away, plus free drinks and snacks and guaranteed seating. And the seats are more comfortable, if you get a nice new train!

Are you sure this deal is only available through the Virgin Red app? Previous weekend Hot Cakes deals have been bookable online.

Yup, weekends are more lower first or upper second class travel imho

The food is much better during the week too. You can get sozelled and full for £20. Maybe that is why the midweek deals are rarer. Having done it a few times now though, first class is so much nicer than cattle train any day of the week

First Class is going to be a whole lot more like Cattle Class this weekend then. :smirk:
