Got excited at being able to get the 3 Golden Axes for a quid. Bought the 3 Golden Axes, redeemed on Steam only to realize that I already owned the Sega Classics Collection. Talk about being greedy... :disappointed:

Gunstar Heroes would still stand up today as a downloadable Indy title. I think it was possibly the best game on the Mega Drive.

Sad we've never seen a decent, updated Gain Ground, loved that game and trying to save every character.

These are by far the best ones:
Streets of Rage 2
Shining Force II
Beyond Oasis
Gunstar Heroes
Dynamite Headdy
And for the rest, I'd take these:
Streets of Rage 3
Shining Force
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
Wonder Boy in Monster World
Golden Axe™ II
Golden Axe III
Revenge of the Shinobi
Shinobi™ III: Return of the Ninja Master
Altered Beast™
Comix Zone™
Ristar™
Alex Kidd™ in the Enchanted Castle
Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole
Eternal Champions™
Vectorman™
That should give you the best, and a good mix of what the Megadrive had to offer.

Be sure to get Gain Ground, Shinobi, Altered Beast, Vectorman, Alien Storm, Columns and Biohazard Battle. Those would be my reccomendations in addition to Streets of Rage and Golden Axe.

Do these appear as individual games in the steam library or do they all go into that Sega classics UI thing? I wanna get 20 but don't want my Steam library clogged up with all that ****.

Oooooh never realised you could get Megadrive games on steam. Any other consoles on there?
I wouldn't say SoR nor G.Axe have aged well tbh.
Best picking up the sequels to really get any 'game' out it.
I tend to find the fastest way to ruin nostalgia is to relive it.
Oooh, if you have a PC though, pick up Streets of Rage Remake; fantastic game. The makers were real fans of the originals and just poured that labour of love into the game.
Look into it, well worth half hour of your time.
Someone mentioned Eternal Champions, absolutely solid game, AI basically cheated. Loved it though.
Personally, I'd go with:
SoR 2-3.
Shining Force II
G.Axe 2-3
Revenge of Shinobi
Shinobi 3
Gunstar Heroes
Kid Chameleon (early game)
Alien Soldier
Sword of Vermilion
Eternal Champions
Space Harrier 2
ESWAT
Biohazard Battle (goes by another name here I think)
Galaxy Force 2
Gain Ground
Megadrive man, had to wire my own up at 12 cos they came without a plug.

I love the Mega Drive, I was playing some Street Fighter 2, Streets of Rage, and Sensible Soccer last night.
I got the £39.99 Mega Drive classic console for Christmas with 80 built in games, and that's pretty good. It has two wireless pads (which are pretty good but work on Infra Red, so you need to have a line of sight to the console) and you can even put in real Mega Drive cartridges, and plug in real Mega Drive control pads. The only downside is the sound isn't perfect, it's alright, but playing games like Sonic 2, where the soundtrack brings back such nostalgia from my early teenage years sitting in front of the 14 inch telly playing the game with my brother for hours and hours #nosaves.
Anyway I wanted to buy Streets of Rage, Sonic 3, Revenge of Shinobi, and these games cost a few quid on eBay, so fortunately stumbled across a device called a Mega Expert Passport on a website called funstockretro.co.uk, it was £19.99 last week in a sale but is now £39.99, and it fits into the cartridge slot of the Mega Drive classic console, and has an SD card slot. Every Mega Drive game ever comfortably fits onto a 2GB SD card slot, so money well spent.
In fact I might go play a bit Golden Axe now.......

I agree with the 'by far the best ones' but I think Golden Axe 1 should be there. Also, the Mega Drive version is good because there are extra levels at the end after rescuing the king and queen as you go behind the door.

seems to be no way to find out which games have multiplayer. gonna pick up a lot of the RPG's i never got a chance to play as a kid but other than sor2/3 and golden axe 2/3 are there any arcade essentials (shame no streetfighter or sensible soccer...) for when the friends come around ?

Can't help there (other than Golden Axe 1) but for RPGs...
Phantasy Star II was the best for its day costing £60 - very famous game with a weird send them to their doom ending. Landstalker was famous for being one of the last RPGs which pushed the console to its limit. Golden Axe I in my view is better than 2 or 3 and is famous for extending the game beyond the arcade with extra levels behind the final door. Shining Force games and Shining in the Darkness are very good games and were expensive to get hold of.

Altered Beast would be considered an arcade classic, and Gunstar Heroes is fantastic with two players.:sunglasses:
