How much?!

2723373.jpg
Simplicity
Setup is easy. Just connect your Steam Link to your TV and home network, where it will automatically discover any computer running Steam. All that’s left to do is grab your favorite controller, kick back, and enjoy your collection of games from the comfort of your couch.

2723373.jpg

Performance
Steam Link is designed to take advantage of the horsepower you already have in your home, streaming from your current gaming computer by mirroring its experience to your TV. Video and audio data is sent from your computer to the Steam Link, while your controller input is sent back in real time. Virtually every game that your computer runs can be played on your TV using Steam Link.

The Steam sale (for which this is price matched) ends tomorrow mate. So I would assume it will be the at the same time.

Comes & goes very frequently, so if you miss this for whatever reason there'll always be a next time in a few weeks or 1-2 months - a relevant forum search to show this: https://www.hotukdeals.com/tag/steam-link-hot

Can anyone point me in the direction of a wireless controller that works well and costs less than twenty quid? The ones I'm looking at are £30+...

There were a large amount of supported controllers for what I could see:

* http://steam.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_compatible_controllers_with_Steam_Link
* https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9772-WHJM-4676 (official link, under Supported controllers)

Can PS3, XBox 360 or Nvidia Shield remotes connect to it?
mickael28
3 Jul 17 #216
It was not the Steam controller, I am still thinking about getting it at some point but the cheapest I've seen in Game is £28 and I don't see myself using it much (if at all), so I didn't want to pay that much.

I just got a bluetooth controller for an Android TV box that appeared here recently...

3 Jul 17 #215
You are aware that the controller can connect to the steam link (hopefully near your tv) and doesn't have to connect to the PC?
mickrick
3 Jul 17 #214
How much did you pay for the controller?
mickael28
3 Jul 17 #213
Thanks man, I just managed to go to a local GAME and order it from there, I'm still having the problem!!!

I just ended up paying £1 more for this and a controller, as I couldn't get my game rewards, but thought worth getting them now in case these things go up in price.

I'll try to contact game online at some point in the coming weeks, but I doubt they'll have a clue!
mickrick
3 Jul 17 1 #212
Yeah, I did eventually. What I did was, log out of my account and then ordered using a guest account. I entered the exact same address details and the order went through first time. Then I logged in again and tried the order process again, and got the exact same error again. I don't buy from Game that often so I'm not that concerned. But if I did I would be seriously peed off at this happening everytime I tried to order something.
mickael28
3 Jul 17 #211
Exactly the same thing, wth. Error entering address, keeps on looping to the top of the page, without errors but without allowing me to enter any address. And server error when trying to add a card...

Did you manage to sort it out yet?

Just played around with mine today. It's a really easy and great way to stream your desktop to a tele if your lan's up for it. The latency is barely noticeable, even though my pc is on wifi.
mickrick
1 Jul 17 #203
Yeah I had that too. But when using PayPal I get right through to the PayPal payment, but instead of verifying it just goes back to the order screen with the "invalid billing address", but the deliver and billing addresses match OK. And when I try using my card I get the "server error" screen.
doveman007
1 Jul 17 #202
I've got a Gbit switch connected to one of the two ports on my Sky router, which in turn has my Steam link, RPi, BT TV box, Xbox360 connected. Is the streaming likely to work better if I connect my PC to the switch rather than the second port on the router?
thermomonkey
30 Jun 17 #201
Yeah when I was putting in my postcode and selecting an address it wasn't inputting a county and then rejecting it. I had to manually input my county.

30 Jun 17 #200
No rearranging required as all devices were next to plug sockets, and I had already invested in the power line adaptors due to the woeful WiFi on my ps4, so it was just a case of a six quid switch to add the steam box. It's very simple and a lot more reliable now.
mickrick
30 Jun 17 #199
This is still available but everytime I try to buy one, either by card or PayPal, I get server errors or invalid billing address errors. Anyone else having this problem?
abradley101
30 Jun 17 #198
I found on Wifi it worked okay for some games. To be honest, it works really well with powerline adaptors and they are pretty cheap nowadays. Wifi really isn't good for streaming games over. Heat from me though as I love mine paired with a fantastic Steam Controller. Brought PC gaming back to life from the dusty old desk days.
TehJumpingJawa
30 Jun 17 #197
Anyone know how in-home streaming handles high frame rates (>100) on the source device?
Does the encoder just capture at a framerate suitable to meet the requested bit rate of the sink device? (In this case, the steam link)
Does it force vsync / introduce tearing?

On a related note, anyone know how much latency is added by the encoder->transmission->decode->relay inputs cycle?
Is it noticeable in FPS's?
mnc221
30 Jun 17 #196
I'm wondering if this will have high latency when connecting 2 dualshock 4 controllers wirelessly . When I connect both controllers on PC there is too much input lag. Is this any different?

30 Jun 17 #195
Funnily enough I also use a Sky router and I had wondered for a while if that might be playing a part in this. I very much doubt their routers are designed with internal network efficiency in mind.

So basically you have to rearrange parts of your house to use this thing. That seems to be a recurring problem with a lot of modern tech tbh.

Definitely powerline adaptors, direct into the plug. I had one in a double plug, caused issues, soon as that was removed its 99% bang on.

Mine arrived yesterday. Plugged it in and it's very easy to set up (apart from the "hidden" settings menu to find the Bluetooth settings!!). Hooked up to the network easily, found my PC straight away and was able to stream games with, what felt like, no lag at all. Played a couple of racers and they seemed fine. Got the Xbox One S controller working and it was like playing a console, so easy!

Then tried the minimising technique to watch Sky Go and that worked great too, perfect. Great little device for so little money.

22 Jun 17 #131
Worked fine once I'd directly connected my PC to a switch in the loft, the switch connects directly to my router downstairs. Simplest route was to take it outside and up the gable end of the house with a CAT 6 and directly in to the loft. (My upstairs and downstairs no longer speak on a Home Plug as I got a split consumer unit.

It was no use for me on Wi-Fi, it was too intermittent even though I was getting 30-40meg on speedtest !!.

You can add non-steam games.

If you are hard wired, whether home plug or LAN, it's great.

Yes, you can get Final Fantasy games on Steam - http://store.steampowered.com/search/?term=final+fantasy
And, yes, the speed of your laptop will affect gameplay because it is your laptop that is running the game. Check the Steam store pages for each game to see their individual system requirements.

It streams audio/video from your PC to a TV - so if you have a PC that you play games on using Steam but you wish you had the option of playing those same games on the big TV in your living room, using a controller from the sofa, then this plugs into your TV and connects to your PC over your local network. You switch your PC on in the other room and it runs the game while the TV shows the picture. If you know what a Chromecast is, it's like that for games.

I read a long thread somewhere on the steam website than some integrated graphics don't play nice with the link regardless of what power settings you select. It will always reduce the clocking (on a hardware level) when it detects the screen is off leading to juddering. Your laptop also probably has dedicated graphics which don't seem to have issues.

If you'd really like the functionality, I'd really suggest getting a pair of Powerline adapters. You dont need any of the higher end ones. The basic TP-Link 600mbps 'starter pack' is more than good enough. Just £25. This should give you way better internet speeds on your PC in general, too.
reddragon105
22 Jun 17 #106
I haven't had that problem with Origin games. How have you got it setup? Are you adding Origin itself as a non-Steam game or the individual Origin games? Have you got the Origin overlay enabled or disabled?
Try adding Origin itself as a non-Steam game, disable the overlay for any game(s) you want to play, and make sure it doesn't automatically start with Windows so that you launch Steam first via the Steam Link, then launch Origin from Steam, then launch the game from Origin.

Pretty sure you can connect multiple devices to a single Bluetooth dongle - haven't got a USB one in anything but I use a Bluetooth Xbox One controller and a Bluetooth headset and I can use both of those at the same time with the Steam Link's Bluetooth and with the built-in Bluetooth on my laptop. With my desktop I just plug them in with USB cables as I have USB ports on the side of my keyboard, so haven't tried adding Bluetooth to it yet.

Honestly, that sounds more like an issue with your laptop's settings than with Steam streaming. Check your Windows power settings to see what your laptop does when the lid is closed as it sounds like it's going to sleep or lowering performance settings. I haven't streamed from my laptop much but I'm pretty sure I was able to close the lid without affecting the streaming and I don't have my desktop monitor on when I'm streaming from that so it can't be display dependent. You can change Windows settings to do nothing when the lid is closed but some laptops just don't work 100% with their lids closed because they're designed on a hardware level to shut off/limit something.

If you add a non steam game such a witcher 3 purchased via GoG - you can get it to open the and run the game just it will not identify the game controller linked to Steamlink - I did some extensive 'googling' to try and find a fix and it seems some games will recognize the controller and some wont - hence isnt a reliable solution. Adding Kodi to the steam library works perfectly with a controller as an example where it does function as hoped.

chrisread2000
22 Jun 17 #99
Only other consideration is that i believe with a bluetooth usb dongle, you can only connect one controller at a time. With the xbox dongle you can connect multiple (4 or 8?) controllers simultaneously .... I have a feeling though that you could use multiple bluetooth dongles and connect a controller individually to each ...

Nice little device if you really only use Steam library for all your games - you can add GoG, Origin etc but I have found it doesn't detect the controller paired to steam link and assumes a mouse keyboard set up (mass effect andromeda as an example), my work around was that an xobox one paired directly to pc still has range to work in my living room (albeit with occasional disconnect which is frustrating).

Also Powerline adapters at both ends are essential I have found - not just for reduced gaming lag but streaming of any media - such as via kodi, I was getting annoying stuttering which was eliminated by powerline adapters.
reddragon105
22 Jun 17 1 #90
This is all correct, but just to clarify you don't need a Bluetooth USB dongle to connect a controller to the Steam Link as the Steam Link has Bluetooth built in.

They essentially do just stream your PC's display - by default they start by launching Steam in Big Picture mode, because they're obviously designed for Steam and meant to be as controller friendly as possible, but as previously mentioned you can then just alt-tab out of it to get to your desktop. However there is also an option somewhere in the menu to just start streaming your PC's desktop as-is, so either way you would be able to stream your Blu-Rays.

There are no system requirements for your PC to use the Steam Link, so as long as it can run Rocksmith it can stream it.
However - you might have a different problem with that particular game, as the Steam Link doesn't have drivers for the Real Tone cable that you plug into your guitar. There is a workaround, which involves using VirtualHere, but that's separate software you have to purchase and setup, so depends whether you think it's worth it.
vsy
22 Jun 17 #89
I have onboard graphics, only play Rocksmith 2014, would this run it ok for streaming to my living room TV? Or would I need a graphics card?
Pacman786
22 Jun 17 #88
I've ordered one, hope it works with Windows '95.

May have to download some drivers.

edit
I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure you don't need internet to use this, just need a wireless router and pc, also a TV to connect steam to. I'm saying because the Ps3 streaming worked that way, pc to Ps3 I mean.

So I can't find out exactly how these work. So they just mirror the desktop exactly, or is it just steam that is mirrored? I.e. can I use this to play blu ray, essentially using my Ethernet connection as an HDMI extension? Any help appreciated.

I can confirm that you can connect the latest xbox 1 controller to a pc via bluetooth, no xbox dongle required. You can buy a pc bluetooth usb dongle for £6 on amazon if your pc doesnt have bluetooth. However older xbox 1 controllers (I believe the ones without the 3.5mm headphone jack) do not have normal bluetooth, and you have to buy the xbox controller dongle to connect them wirelessly to a pc.

Yeah that's the benefit of the current house. Doors have wide enough gaps under to fit the cable. Wiring would be everyones ideal world I think! Like I've mentioned previously, from personal experience the latency, when combined with other sources of general latency - can be an issue at times. But it depends on so many factors it would be hard to pinpoint the powerline adapter itself as the sole reason for this.

I thought it was 6pm too.

I actually had my laptop plugged into my TV via HDMI the other night, just to see what some games looked like in 4k. It was a bit of a palava, balancing the laptop on the kids toy kitchen so the HDMI would reach, and trying to to trip over the power lead.

I know this won't run games in 4k, but will help with the other stuff!

I'm assuming your brother lives in a different house, there's a lot of different variables when it comes to speedtests and such. Is his powerline adaptor connected to the mains? If not that is throttling his connection, also depends on his router and ethernet cable and powerline adaptor of course. But generally Powerline adaptors are better than WiFi
lump

For gods sake, steam sale hasn't even started yet and I'm buying this?!

Rid1
22 Jun 17 #71
Powerline adaptors are fairly cheap, I picked up some for £20 @Ryman (Cheaper than everywhere else for me).
Makes a massive difference too! Used to get 100KB-2MB. With my adaptor I'm getting a constant 8MB to 9.7MB and thats for steam downloads.
Going from WiFi to Ethernet I wonder why I didn't buy a powerline adaptor earlier.

As someone reddragon105 said some powerline adaptors may or may not work in your home depending on how your home is circuited. The issue with WiFi is that so many electrical applications run at 2.4Ghz so that may be interfering with your signal.
reddragon105
22 Jun 17 2 #70
But then you still have the problem of how to route the cable through your house. Don't get me wrong - if it was up to me I'd have wired connections everywhere; I wish they built houses with ethernet ports next to every power socket - but I replaced a 20m ethernet cable with PowerLine adaptors and it's better overall because it's much tidier and also now I can close my living room door (there wasn't enough clearance for the cable!). There is a little bit of latency with them but not enough to affect anything I would ever use them for.

It really doesn't. You're streaming data from your PC to the Steam Link - all you need for that is a LAN (Local Area Network) which is what you have when you connect two devices to the same router. The router does not need to be connected to the internet at all for this to work. You will need to be online if you want to play online, but you could just disconnect from the internet, start Steam in offline mode and still stream to the Steam Link in your living room. All the data just goes through the router, so performance depends on the quality of your router and its Wi-Fi connection (if you're using Wi-Fi).
Fast internet does not give you fast Wi-Fi or a good router - Wi-Fi is probably about 20MB/s at most, so if you're paying for 100MB/s internet and only using it wirelessly then you're wasting your money, because 100MB/s internet does not give you a 100MB/s wireless connection to your router. However, if you have a good router with gigabit ethernet ports then two PCs connected via ethernet cable could use the whole 100MB/s of your internet speed but they could also communicate with each other ten times faster, at 1000MB/s, because the data is just going from PC1 to router to PC2, not PC1 to router to internet to router to PC2 - and that is what is happening when you use a Steam Link.
slayermatt
22 Jun 17 #69
Yeah its a shame about the latency. Powerline adapters are better than wifi, but I've noticed you do still suffer (While my hardwire connection to the router puts me at a 15ms ping on speedtest, my brother whose on a powerline, connected to the same test server, is at 50ms.

So good my daughters also purchased one each.

I had mine with powerline and the quality wasnt great IMO. Lag was about acceptable for games that don't require low delay. Obviously this isn't going to be an option for many people but I live in a flat and have a HDMI cable going from my PC through the wall into my living room tv and amp. Infinitely better if you can have such a setup.

22 Jun 17 #66
Worth mentioning the battery door and controller carry case are also cheap at £2.49 and £3.49 respectively. Though I fail to see the point in the battery door (designed to hold the dongle as well) if you buy the case which seems the better option anyway. The case also works for an Xbox One controller as well apparently. Looking up now to see if it is suitable for others eg. Xbox 360, PS3, PS4 controllers.

22 Jun 17 #65
That's odd, I'm not sure what's happening for you. Sky Go has no idea that it's running through a Steam Link - after all, the Steam Link is just mirroring your screen. If my PC is registered then I don't have to do anything else.

I'm going to guess it was Wi-Fi tbh. The SteamLink was connected directly over cat6 but the gaming PC is on Wi-Fi at the other end of the room. I've had trouble trying to stream content from it via Plex before as well.
Spark

slayermatt
22 Jun 17 #54
Long ethernet cables are also a hell of a lot cheaper. I picked up a 50m cable for a fiver that works fine at cat 5e rather than 6 obviously but should still be enough. Powerlines are good, although I have noticed they exhibit higher latency which could be an issue.
garybb
22 Jun 17 #53
Every thing works better over ethernet but you shouldn't have any problem using this wireless unless you dont have good internet.
slayermatt
22 Jun 17 #52
Xbox one does work without the wireless hassle via USB (was the only way without the dongle) so i'd assume it works (most games seem to pick it up as a 360 controller I've found when using it that way). I guess wireless all depends, although I'm sure the linux based drivers do exist at this point. Nice to know the PS4 one works flawlessly. Was the latency down to a wireless network or just the device being a pain? Interested to know :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: Just saw you mentioned wireless previously! It's a shame it doesn't work particularly well that way. Would make it perfect for most people.

reddragon105
22 Jun 17 #50
None so far, I don't think. Just lots of firmware updates, which have improved things massively since they were first released.
You can, just by hitting alt-tab after Steam has loaded in Big Picture. Then you can just use your PC for anything you normally would. Or you can add non-Steam programs like the emulators to your Steam library list and launch them directly from Steam (which means you could do it easily with a controller).
Have to say, though, if you just want to play emulators on the living room TV, why not get a Raspberry Pi with RetroPie or something? It would be cheap enough (even a £5 Pi Zero could handle SNES games) and consume far less power (no point in running a 500w PC for something a 10w device can do), plus it would mean you could use the PC while the kids are gaming in the living room.

Because that's just impractical in most cases. If your TV is in the same room as your PC then, sure, you might as well just use a long HDMI cable. But if it isn't, you're probably not going to want to run a long cable across the floor, out into the hall, probably up and down some stairs. You could carefully run it along the skirting boards, or make holes in your walls and floor, but that's probably going to take a weekend of moving furniture around and/or redecorating afterwards - and what if you don't own the place? And you don't just need the picture on your TV - you need to be able to control it too, so that's a long HDMI cable plus probably at least two long USB cables, assuming any wireless controllers aren't going to be able to connect to your PC from where your TV is. You're probably going to need at least 20m of each cable, and then you've got signal degradation to take into account...
Meanwhile, the Steam Link just plugs and plays - and if Wi-Fi isn't good enough, try PowerLine adaptors - they're effectively like running ethernet cable through your house, except you're using the electrical wires already installed in the walls.
hotfinder
22 Jun 17 #49
Want but don't need. PC gaming nowadays is on my laptop which is better to just move and connect directly to a TV if I wanted to. I guess this is a bit like the fad with PS TV hence why the price is dropping like a stone. However if it could be like Onlive and stream my Steam library from their cloud servers I'd be on it :sunglasses: Future update maybe?
hamfist
22 Jun 17 #48
It's easier to run/hide cat5/6 cable, vs. HDMI. I already had a wired network installed. HDMI cables don't generally work well on cable runs of 10M+. You'd still need a way of controlling your PC....active USB cables or some sort network interface?

I think the Steam Link is the cheaper and easier option for most people.

22 Jun 17 #47
So tempted for this price but think to myself I would probably use it a handful of times , plus I don't have a nice sexy steam controller :disappointed:
Spark
22 Jun 17 #46
Nothing. If you can do that then you should do that. All this basically does is allows you to play PC games over your home network using Big Picture mode. If you can use a long HDMI cable then you can basically cut the middle (and by far most problematic) man out.
BurntEffigy
22 Jun 17 1 #45
You'd also need a long controller cable and a long keyboard cable.
My PC is upstairs, where as my TV is downstairs, that would mean 3x >20 metre cables running down the stairs. Not for me thanks, I prefer the steam link through powerline adapters.

If your PC is in the same room as your TV then you're right, connecting the PC to the TV via HDMI is viable.

It will take pretty much any controller so whichever is your favourite. Connection options are Bluetooth and USB (or any USB wireless adaptor if a controller uses its own).

There is a great list of what works and what doesn't here - http://steam.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_compatible_controllers_with_Steam_Link

Some options include -

Steam controller - the design is unconventional but it's supposed to be very good once you get used to it (even for games that usually require a keyboard and mouse).
Xbox 360 controllers - wired ones can just plug in, for wireless ones you'll need a USB wireless adaptor. Official ones aren't that expensive but you can also get cheap third party ones for a few quid and I can confirm that those work because that's what I have.
Xbox One controllers - apparently the USB wireless adaptor for these doesn't work natively with the Steam Link, but if you have one of the newer ones (introduced with the Xbox One S last year) they have Bluetooth, so they can just connect to the Steam Link directly. But any Xbox One controller can be used wired with a standard micro USB cable.
PS4 Dual Shock 4 - also works wired with a micro USB cable but they also all have Bluetooth - press the PS button + Share to put it into sync mode.

I've got a Steam Link connected to my desktop via PowerLine adaptors and can't fault the performance on it, except with maybe a little lag on games like Rocket League, which may be down to things like other people/devices using the network or maybe could be solved by turning picture quality down.
PowerLine performance depends on few things, like which adaptors you get, your router and your house's electrical wiring's quality and layout, so your mileage may vary, but in any case it should be faster than Wi-Fi and with less interference!

I use an app called UWPHook to get my Windows Store (Xbox) games into Steam. Google it :stuck_out_tongue:

Wired is the the best way to use Steam Link. Wifi was just too intermittent for my liking. It works pretty well over ethernet with negligible lag. The picture quality does look a little soft compared to playing directly on PC, but it's still perfectly acceptable.

As others have mentioned, warning if you plan to use this in Wifi. Depending on the distance from your PC / Wifi signal it could become virtually impossible to play it. To counter this you should use the ethernet port OR you could get a wifi range extender to boost the signal of your Wifi.

Xbox 360/One controllers are Bluetooth but they use a bespoke connection protocol IIRC. That's why you need a USB dongle to wirelessly connect an Xbox controller to a PC. I don't think they've changed that for the One S controller but I could be wrong.

Great price, heated. Wish the steam controller would get discounted too though, the link is going for pennies but the controller seems to stick at £30+. I'd like to get one simply for couch gaming on RTS and adventure games that the PC excels at but can't justify £30 just for that....

Guess I could use the Xbox One controller the same way anyway if you could map the mouse pointer to one of the sticks and the L and R click to the face buttons or triggers....

The PS4 controller works perfectly. I was playing RE7 on mine and it was basically like running the game on a PS4 Pro (when network latency wasn't getting in the way).

The Xbox One uses proprietary wireless protocols so you would need an adaptor and even then I'm not sure if it would work. Probably too much hassle tbh.
