I've been working on cruise ships for the last year and have visited about 70 different countries since last March, and Santorini is easily in my top three destinations that I've had the opportunity to go to. I'm desperate to go back there and just wish I could rope in some other friends to go. Heat from me!

What are the other two destinations in your top 3?

Was booking a holiday to Santorini last year but didn't in the end. Is it worth staying somewhere other than Oia? I was looking at Perissa but it seemed to lack the whole attraction to Santorini; it could've been anywhere.

I was there last week, and weather was amazing! You are better off staying at Fira. As it is easier to get local buses from fira to other parts of the island. And you don't have to compromise on the views either!

santorini is great, small island but lots to do and see
get a hire car and you can stay anywhere and get from one end of the island to the other in approx 30 mins. bus service is fine but its easier by car - just be careful driving as plenty of hairpin bends with big drops

I've been there seven times in the last 34 years. Had our honeymoon there. IMO the best place to stay is Perrisa as it is the least ruined. Much more space and chilled out. You can get a bus to Thira very easily and then leave because it's usually so manic. Don't stay in Thira if you hate lots of steps and very high prices. Don't go to Oia to see the sunset as there are much better places to see the sunset without the crowds spoiling it.

Fira is the best place to stay.
Take coach to Oia to watch sunset.
Rent quadbike to explore the whole island in a day.
Thats what I did when I was there a few years ago, really liked it.

Just a warning that you ensure your accommodation is sorted and take child bookings as there are places on the Island that don't, this is just one of many reviews I read before deciding not to visit with children...
I am dying to go here but my boyfriend said its too much hassle because they don't fly from Scotland :disappointed: our closest airport is Glasgow so we'd need to get a train to London or Manchester first.

Don't forget to factor in spends - I've heard it's far from cheap once there. For example I was told 1 beer is around 7 euros.

I've just returned from a holiday there last week and I would say prices there are similar to the UK. There's plenty of fancy & overpriced restaurants/bars where a beer might cost 4-5 euros, but regular supermarkets are very reasonable.
