I have bad eyesight and have been looking for a big display DAB for a while. This looks reminiscent of the Philips AJB3552/05 (no longer manufactured - how did I miss that!) which looked like this
The description says "Ex-Display/Demo Item In Excellent Condition - Supplied Complete In Original Retail Box - The Item May Have Small Cosmetic Blemishes Such As Minor Marks." and "6 months warranty".
The Pure Siesta Rise looks perfect (as another big display DAB alarm alternative), but it's around £70 (gulp).

Looks good for the money, but reading the reviews this has put me off: "There is only 2 settings of brightness on the display. The lowest level is still very bright in the night."
A few people have mentioned it.

We got one of these from Currys a couple of years ago and it's been great. It's a bit annoying that you have to turn it on and scroll through the menus to get to the alarm settings and I don't think the DAB aerial is up to much, but we get a fine signal from it.
£20 is pretty good value for what it is

I nearly did buy the Sandstrom but still not sure if the display would be big enough for me to see easily without glasses! This is more the size I'm looking for but more modestly priced alternatives seem thin on the ground (this is the Pure Siesta Rise) - also the USB charging function for mobiles etc is a great addition.

I got this, tbh it is a nice looking clock and keeps time perfectly, but setting alarms and stuff is way troublesome, you have to relook at instructions each time!

it's not clear if it has a headphone socket, or if that's the AUX socket that's mentioned twice.
thanks

I've read a few reviews stating it has a headphone socket (at the back, according to Amazon Q&A amazon.co.uk/for…I50 )
Page 6 on the manualslib web page also shows you the connections (page 10 of the scanned instruction manual) manualslib.com/man…e=6 (also page 22 of the manualslib web link/page 42 of the instruction manual).

Does anyone know if the radio alarm will sound through the headphone socket or does it always use the speaker?

I thought it was only me replacing a dream machine. Fantastic but dated alarm clock and the radio is not sounding so good after 27 years

If you can get hold of one of the original Philips radios mentioned, even 2nd hand on eBay, then I'd highly recommend one. I spent an unhealthy amount of time deciding which clock radio to buy a few years back and settled on the Philips as the best I could get that did what I wanted. Then I managed to pick one up half price when they discontinued them, but I'd have quite happily paid full price and still would. I think if it went wrong now, I'd struggle to find something to replaces it with. I particularly like the auto adjusting brightness, and the gradual-volume increase when the radio starts first thing in the morning, so it doesn't wake you up suddenly.
I did try websites try to see if I could get the Philips AJB3552/05 at first, as I thought it sounded perfect and looked on the Philips website for details. Looks like it has good sound - though the newer DAB clock radios around now with USB charging are even more useful (only appears to be more "premium" models that have this). philips.co.uk/c-p…dio
Mind you, this review reckons the audio quality isn't great cnet.com/uk/…ew/
If the Pure Siesta Rise was half the price I'd be all over it.

I can't say I've ever noticed a problem with the audio quality, but then I've only ever really used it when going to sleep or waking up and always had the volume down low. I suspect if you wanted to use it as a general purpose radio too, the quality might be a bit pants, but that wasn't my intended use so it's never caused me a problem.

This Deal only has 3 left - the aforementioned cheaper offers are out of stock.
But there's 9 available here (£19.95 + £2.99 P&P New/Other = £22.94) ebay.co.uk/itm…210
The reason for my earlier question about the alarm is because I always use a stereo pillow speaker and I want the alarm, whether I select radio or buzzer, to ALWAYS play through the headphone socket if phones or external speakers are plugged in. A lot of machines insist on using the main speaker for alarms.
I picked mine up today, and agree that setting the alarm was tricky, but I'm getting the hang of navigating the menus. I like that you can set it for every day, weekdays or weekends.

mine didn't come with a manual, and the scan at manualslib is not the best. Would anyone with a manual be willing to make a decent scan? Or even just take good photos and share them? I am willing to Photoshop them and stitch them into a pdf. Thanks!

The display on this is far too bright. I made a simple light filter by cutting a rectangle off a thin black bin liner and sticking it on, and it's dimmed the display and it's now perfect.
