Some products such as coca and rice have increased in price due to its own supply issues. That said we buy everything is brought in $ or €. Petrol is brought in $/€.. Even though many large companies buy in advance (up 6 months or more) and that has migated (so far) of price inflation - it will eventally feed into the system.
With price inflation and where in some markets (like food) it is price sensitive; the company has 3 options.
1. absorb the price increases.
2. reduce the quantity sold at that price (so say reducing the weight from 500grams to 450 grams)
The above would mean little change to your weekly shop but its still inflationary..
the 3rd option is to increase prices ..
jimbo23
16 Jun 171#75
So if we went back to pre-referendum currency exchange, food as well as everything else would drop dramatically? I don't think so.
There are still crazy deals going on and have been since the referendum. Even though the currency dropped. I've gone through my online food shopping bills over the last 2 years and there hasn't been much of a difference at all. It works both ways, we are the consumers, companies essentially work for and around us. No consumers buying, product dead in the water. Also, a lot of companies have a safety buffer on products for things like currency fluctuation.

Live in hope! I paid £116 for the 500gb version just over a year ago and reckon that at £139 now it's better value than the 250gb at £77 is now in this thread,
By the time that the 500gb falls to £77 who knows what sort of memory device the boffins will have thought up.
Most likely a scam pricing. They pop up briefly all the time.

I made a mistake on my quote... my post should have been:
If demand is high, why decrease manufacturing?
If DRAM is been extensively used in smartphones, why reduce production? This would justify an increase in production.

TLC is MLC. The nand is the same, it just has more bits stored. The actual limit per cell is much higher than three, but there's a trade off with longevity.
vNand is different to regular nand as it uses a different method to store bits which should give it a longer lifespan.
Sholan
14 Jun 17#63
I don't know why Samsung call them MLC when they are 3bit cells which would make the TLC. Just stacked 32 or 48 cells high.

1. there was a fire at a fab - less capacity.
2. many fabs are converting from 2d flash to 3d flash ..
3. chips take about 3 months produce.
4. Silicon cylinders are sliced into wafers, these wafers can only be made into dram or flash memory - you can't instantly switch...
Producing chips isn't easy and an easy answer won't be forth coming

I'm still happily using tiny 120GB SSD's on a few computers without issue....yes bigger might be better for those that move/store tons of data but for me the days of having huge drives one each machine are long gone.... networked drives or a server to have all you prawn and music warez stored and nimble SSD's in your dekstop/laptop. Well that's wot I do.

Sholan
13 Jun 17#54
250GB is a little small these days and once you fill an SSD its life expectancy becomes a lot lower. So it is always better to have a much larger drive than you need so you can keep some free space.

You do realise that the SAMSUNG Company is not Europe, European, and/or has it's 'source' anyyyyyyywhere near Europe right?.
It's a South Korean Company.
As in East Asia, and /or an Oriental Company altogether ...
SAMSUNG has nothing to do with anywhere to do with a European anything?, lol. :-)
It's much like the Japanese Company SONY ...

840 had a serious firmware issue that was making them slower and slower when accessing old data. Samsung released a fix with their tool that basically circumvents the issue by parsing the disk and re-writing old data, but it significantly decreases the life expectancy of the disk.
At any rate I would suggest upgrade to the 850. I have done that, and just run the windows partition by the 840.I really do not care if it fails (easily replaceable unlike work related data)

I know we had it good last year with SSD's at stupidly low prices but it was never sustainable and I think this price is acceptable for the size and brand. It's still pretty damned cheap price for such a decent performing drive.
spannerzone
13 Jun 17#49
I can say that my 850 doesn't work noticably better than the 830 it replaced in one of my desktops in day to day stuff and the 840 I've got in another machine seems about the same so I'd say no. I don't game or do heavy duty stuff other than a bit of HD video editing though.
jayjayuk1234
13 Jun 17#48
The fact it was cheaper before is irrelevant, unless you have a time machine.
furthermore, memory prices fluctuate all the time so you cannot really compare this way.
Probably best not to mention the fluctuation of the pound to factor in also

If we had not BREXITed would I have saved 3 pounds and 17 pence on my new PC build?
As i've said before the sdd/memory prices are down to two main factors, Nand Supply (or lack of ) and brexit.
1. Nand supply. 3 factors here, a) ever increasing demand from smart devices. b) had seen reports of a fire at a fab(can't confirm ) and 3. Nand manufacturing down due to transition from 2d nand to 3d nand .
That has caused worldwide prices to increase - you will see it at tigerdirect and new egg etc.
2. Brexit - we have seen a massive drop in the GBP to euro and dollar. We buy everything internationally in either euros or dollars .. Accept it and realise this is now the new norm.
Brexit is price inflationary... and we have no control over it ..

Nice price but I wouldn't waste a SATA socket on a drive this small.
That said, it's M.2 PCIe all the way for me these days.
Prices are expected to ease and may drop to last year's prices - but not till next year. Hang out till then or buy now. Its complicated by the complete screw-up by Theresa on the Brexit election which, unless someone with the confidence of the market comes running quickly to the rescue - otherwise we could see further damage the exchange rate.
